I was so impressed with both Fabio and Rafael da Silva at Peterborough, and Rafael again in the home game against Juventus. After seeing their pre-season performances, I don't think the manager would have any hesitation in picking either of them for the first team.
Right-back Rafael may be one of the reasons Sir Alex allowed Danny Simpson to join Blackburn on loan. A typical Brazilian player, he loves being on the ball and running at opponents. It was great to see the support he received from the older players when he came on against Juventus. Rio Ferdinand went straight over to encourage him - playing alongside someone like Rio will have been a big boost.

Rodrigo Possebon is another young Brazilian to keep an eye on. He's so comfortable in possession and he’s an excellent passer.

It's fantastic that United can attract players from as far away as Brazil - in my playing days I don't think the club even had scouts in Europe, let alone South America! Football really is a global sport and everyone's competing for the best players. That said, we're still finding boys closer to home - Lee Martin, Darron Gibson, Tom Cleverley, Jonny Evans and Fraizer Campbell all did well in pre-season.

The Juve performance was much more impressive than Peterborough.

Tougher side, at the huge environs of OT, after a hype-filled debut - and you end up playing better than your debut.

I usually stay very level headed and even tempered about youngsters (preaching caution and calm at every opportunity), but after Wednesday I'm officially a little bit excited about Raphael's potential.

I reckon his Peterborough performance was better. Understandably Juve are a tougher opposition but Peterborough were up for the match and gave a stiffer test to United.

Juve match was just a friendly stroll for both sides.
 
Regardless, he's beginning to give me a semi.

I hope we go deep enough in the League Cup to give him a chance to strut his stuff against a PL side or two.

I reckon we'll see more than a few cameos from Rafael for the first team. Especially if Nev's injury problems continue to haunt.

He's definitely worth more than a semi.

We lacked width today so let's play the lad on the right against Portsmouth and play Fletcher in the middle alongside Scholes. Hope Giggs and Tevez are back and we might just have a decent team to play at Fratton Park.
 
He didnt get involved as much as I would have liked having come on fresh, but still did generally ok, and winning that free at the end showed great dribblinig ability.
Not sure if he will do well on the wings or not in a real pressure game, I suppose it is an option, Sir Alex is better placed to assess his readiness for that position than I am.

Defensively sound, amazing attacking abillity, fast, composed, very good player overall.

He will make the right back position his own in the coming season, but I think we should test him on saturday.
 
Against Bolton I would have Brown at RB myself for the physical presence but your right, Neville cannot be chosen over this kid much longer.

Hold your horses everyone, it's his first ever first team appearance, he looked good but not ready yet. The way he has lunged in to some tackles scare me a bit, but he looks a frigtening prospect.
 
He dives in too much, and he hasn't quite got his positional sense sorted. Shouldn't be long before he improves on that though.

Lets calm down a little shall we.

I would be surprised if he starts that many games outside the League cup this season unless we get injuries. He could struggle against physical sides like Bolton, but may be an option when we are at home against the league cannon fodder.

i read that evra wasnt great defensively when he joined and the coaches worked on it towards the end of that season and in preseaon and he was our first choice at the start of 2006
rafael could do with some of those tips .. get a bit stronger ..

its a matter of time

Don't you all just love to not "get carried away"?

Many players can raise their level by a huge margin when playing for the first team and with better players. And he can do that.

He was just as good in all first team apperances. I have no doubt he could do well against the likes of Bolton. In this kind of match we will be attacking much much more than defending.

The only worry is that he could be on the end of what Possebon recieved tonight.

As for Brwned saying he dives in too much, he's just a kid who got a cheer for his first one then went for the second. Thats not a worry, not one bit.

Of course Brown is likely to get the nod, and he deserves to continue at right back, but Rafael should start getting some more minutes, he's just great at football this young lad.
