Rafael

Giggs is our best crosser!

Hargreaves and Ronaldo are next. Nani isn't that great, IMO.

Rooney whips in a fantastic cross too. Remember Wes' goal against the dippers?

Neville is another excellent crosser but we haven't seen much of that this season, with his overall form being so poor.

Moving back on topic, Rafael can definitely put in a decent cross. Surely the great and good haven't suddenly decided he can't cross because of one or two loose ones in a single game of football? Surely nobody could be that knee-jerk? Oh wait...

Again, he can be too inconsistent. He was whipping great crosses and especially corners in in the last few games. But against West Ham he went back to his normal routine of playing these shite lofted corners. People rarely ever score from them. Vidic needs the ball whipped across the get his goals.

That's how Rafael seems to cross the ball. He gets a whip on the ball in the same way that Denis Irwin used to.

When Giggs, like Nani, put in their best crosses they can be devastating but for some reason they don't do it consistently. Giggs chooses to loft it sometimes whilst Nani hits the first man so often.

Isn't that all about timing though, knowing when to go to ground and when to stay on your feet?

Not really, it's just common sense. Defending 101, you get taught when you're a kid that you only ever go to ground when you really have to.

He times his tackles pretty well for my money.

Not really, no. Timing is when you go to ground you time it right so you don't foul or miss the tackle.

He just needs to learn not to dive in, and I'm sure he will. Other that, I think his technique in the tackle is fine overall.

Out for a month with ankle ligament damage according to the Daily Mail so will unfortunately miss the Carling Cup final.

We're struggling for players at right back at the moment with O'Shea and Neville's knocks, Wes out for several weeks with a broken metatarsal and now Rafael's injury. Fabio played at right back for the reserves tonight (didn't play the full game - probably with a view to Sunday's game). It's not good news but perhaps we'll get to see a little more of Fabio over the next month.

Rafael sign new deal

Young Reds right-back Rafael has agreed a new two-year contract extension at United, a deal which keeps the promising Brazilian teenager at Old Trafford until at least June 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted with the progress 18-year-old Rafael has made in his debut season with the Reds.

“Everyone at the club has been very impressed and excited by his first year as a professional," Sir Alex told ManUtd.com.

"His enthusiasm and the adventurous way he plays is typical of a Manchester United player, and we are delighted that he has signed a new contract.”

Rafael hopes that this new deal heralds a long association with United. “It has been a fantastic first season and I have been learning from all the players at the club, especially from the defence," he told us.

"It has been an exciting time for me and I want to be part of this club for a long time, so to get an extension to my contract is unbelievable."

Good news. Hopefully, Fabio will follow suit.

I think that Rafael has great potential, he goes forward well and needs to work on his defence. I'm sure that the team is assisting with this, another good addition to the team.

Any news on when he'll be back?

Excuse the bump, according to ssn last night he took a knock. Anyone have any updates? No mention in the injury sticky.

Looked like he was trying to shake off a cramp but, then SAF seemed to mention that both him and Owen would be going for a scan.

The lunge didn't look pretty - seemed to really stretch the groin area but, that wasn't the part he was being treated for on the pitch.

I hope it was just a matter of a cramp.

He was terrible against Ronaldinho last time, wasn't he at fault for their second goal when he went walkabouts and Ronaldinho spent half of the game ripping the piss out of him?

Rafael's our worst right back defensively.

very harsh....

But true.

He's our best right back going forward.

Id rather see Brown at RB for the Milan match. They won too much ball in the air last time.

re: Rafael, that pitch yesterday didn't do him any favours when he lunged

I agree with that, it was at a time where all the momentum was with us and you feel he got a bit carried away with it and decided to over play outside the box and got caught out. Just a sign of inexperience though, no doubt it was spotted by the coaching staff.

I disagree, right now I'd put him and Neville on par defensively. Nev has better defensive positioning but, he is left for pace.

Not sure why Brown isn't being played at right back, perhaps to ensure we don't have another case of not having at least 2 fit center backs.

Rafael I think did quite well against Dinho after the first 10 minutes and yes, he made a mistake by trying to play the ball out at that point for the second goal, he should have hoofed it - at that point in the game. Bet he's learned. But, same time that is one of the things we seem to want him for, his ability to play out of the back.

On the day every one of our defenders were off and Rafael had both good and bad moments against a player that was really up for it and on a day like that even the best right backs would have had a tough time with.

It's just a shame we had Rafael instead of a good right back, I suppose.

Getting knocked out of the champions league isn't going to do Ronaldinho any favours on the international scene either so he's got more incentive to put in an out of your skin performance, if such a thing exists for the brazilian.

I agree. I'd rather Brown at RB for the big games remaining this season. Although Rafael is coming along rather nicely but I wouldnt like us to lose out goals to defensive lapses which unfortunately Rafael's positional sense does put us at risk to.

This kids growing on me quickly...
