Rafael

Fabio was supposed to be the better of the two before they joined

I've heard a few people on here say this, but I thought that Rafael was meant to have been the stand out perfomer of the U18 World Cup. Or maybe it was Fabio and whoever told me that got confused.

Yeah it was Fabio.

He won top goalscorer for Brazil in that tournament, from playing at left back.

3 goals in four matches, which is fecking impressive.

18 years old and I get excited everytime he plays, the lad is going to be a class player - I'm very very excited about him and his brother.

Rafael's first choice in my eyes, well until Wes comes back and then it's still pretty difficult to choose who is the definite first choice right back.

The only thing I worry about with Rafael is his size but then you watch him and he is strong holding off the ball, not bad in the air and if he gets in trouble he just turns on that blazing pace. If Fabio is at the same level then we really can look forward to watching them progress. The thing I like about Rafael the most is his attitude, every single time his sensible when needed but if he see's the chance to run he is gone, he is gonna score more this season.

Wes against the better teams teams with a 4-3-3, Rafael against those teams with a classic pacey winger and against teams that are going to sit back and defend all day long.

Won all his headers today if I remember rightly, one even got a large applause because it was so unexpected :D

Any one else cheered when he did that double tackle on a Sunderland player and won the ball? That's fecking class.

Yeah that was absolutely brilliant. Reminded me of the way Keano used to absolutely tackle right through opponents, see that the ball might be running away and lunge through another opponent to get the ball. I reckoned that Rafael's 2 tackles lifted the crowd and team by at least 7% such that we were able to snatch that last minute winner

Got skinned 2 times. Other than that, he's just brillinat! FFS, he's 18, coming from Brazil and playing in the PL and it looks like he's done nothing else before. And that at such a young age! He's also very good on the ball, can bring forward and has the pace and technique to support the winger

I know he scored a hat trick in the final when they absolutely panned South Korea so they must have all come in that game.

He made two bad errors today, but he got away with them and he's young & learnin. He was a handful going forward.

Are you sure Brazil won that tournament?

Wikipedia says that Brazil weren't even in the third place play off, and so does the Fifa website.

Must have been a different tournament.

Whatever tournament it was they played Korea in the final and absolutely panned them. 7-2 or something like that. And in that game Fabio scored a hat trick.

EDIT: After a google search it must have been this game

I'm sure the commentators said it was the final but it was in a foreign language so i was probably mistaken. I was watching on Eurosport whilst on holiday.

To be honest I think he has a bit of the touch of evra about him, remember a few times when he had such spring when jumping, it reminded me of evra - small, but has a huge jump

Yeah, I've also noticed some similarities between him and Evra. The good thing is he's even better than Evra at going forward, since he's got a good shot on him and puts in good crosses quite often.

He isn't, but I really wouldn't bet against him reaching that level sooner rather than later.

I think going forward he's at least at the same ability as Evra and will far surpass him in future. Evra is much the better defender at the minute though.

Evra is probably better at attacking players than Rafael but Rafael puts in a much better ball more often than Evra.

Yeah, I actually meant when it comes to shooting and crossing. Evra's shooting isn't the best whereas with crosses, from what I've seen so far, Rafael is pretty good. As for actually making runs down the wings, Evra's incredible. Given time though, Rafael should be able to do just as well.

Neville can't stop Rafael - Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson says there is "not a lot" Gary Neville can do to prevent Rafael replacing him as Manchester United's first-choice right-back.

With well over 500 Red Devils appearances to his name, plus 85 England caps, it would be folly to write Neville off just yet.

But as his 34th birthday is looming in February, time is not on his side. And the emergence of Rafael this season has presented a genuine threat to what was once regarded as Neville's automatic place in the United line-up.

Indeed, as Ferguson looks to rest key men and give fringe players a chance against Aalborg in the Champions League, Neville is the one who finds himself benefiting.

"Gary Neville will certainly play tomorrow," said Ferguson. "I felt he was outstanding against Blackburn in the Carling Cup last week and we are doing exactly the right thing by not rushing him back.

"But he knows exactly what happens when a young player like Rafael breaks into the club. When they have such outstanding ability and show such outstanding form there is not a lot you can do about it.

"It is a great aspect of the game that a young boy can turn the corner and take someone's place. At the moment the performances of Rafael have been keeping Gary out."

Not many United observers saw such spectacular progress coming when Rafael arrived in England last January along with twin brother Fabio and midfielder Rodrigo Possebon.

As 17-year-olds, they were brought over from Rio de Janeiro with an eye on the future.

Ferguson could immediately tell he had a special talent on his hands. It is only the past few months that have shown him how good Rafael actually is.

"There was a cautious note because we could not see him in an actual game as it was too late to get a work permit.

"It meant we had to sit and wait to see the real thing in proper games. We finally started him in a pre-season friendly at Peterborough and he took our breath away."

According to Ferguson there have been "a couple of defining moments" since that have convinced the United boss Rafael is no bit-part player.

One came in defeat at Arsenal, when Rafael was introduced as a substitute and scored, the other only 10 days ago in the victory over Manchester City.

"He took that game at Arsenal by the scruff of the neck," said Ferguson.

"He came on with an urgency to win the match for us. Every time the ball went on that side of the pitch, it was like a rat up a drainpipe. It was all done at electric speed.

"It was marvellous to see a young kid play like that in such a big game.

"Unfortunately Redcafe poster Brwned is worried about his defending and positioning but then his performance against City convinced us the boy is ready for it all. He is coping with everything and obviously, our gut feeling has been justified."

It means Neville is unlikely to get what he feels is required to hit top form again.

"I have not been able to stay fit enough, long enough, or produce consistently good enough performances to stay in the team, simple as that," he told MUTV.

"I am fit. I was fit for the game last week. But, am I fit to the level you expect or the level I want to be at?

"I want to get to seven, eight, nine or 10 games over a longer period. That has got to be the aim for me."

While Neville's personal goals may end up being unfulfilled - to say nothing of the long-term prospects of currently injured fellow England international Wes Brown - Ferguson's short-term aim should be achieved easily enough.

Providing United match Villarreal's result at Celtic, they will advance into the knock-out stage as Group E winners.

As opponents could then be limited and, in some cases distinctly tricky, especially if the other three English teams all finish second in their sections, it is where Ferguson prefers to be.

"It is always better to be number one," he said.

"Our experiences of finishing second in these groups has not been good and if we win it we know we have the home legs second in the last 16.

"Overall, I don't think we are doing a lot wrong in Europe.

"As holders the expectation has been delivered. In fact I am probably happier this season because the players have that bit more experience behind them."

:rolleyes::lol:

Ferguson seems to think Neville plays outstanding in every game for some reason.

That's right, but I think even Gaz will agree he's been below average since his comeback.

Of course he has. But SAF knows exactly what he's doing giving an interview like this, just before dropping Raffael and giving Gaz a much-needed run out, in a game where he won't really be tested. Excellent man management. As always.

If Fabio is as good as his brother as most would have us believe we are in for a treat lads, two world class gems unearthed in one season

I really am very excited about these two, I love watching Rafael play. So refreshing to see a young lad come into the first team like that after a year out and not looking at all out of place.

Hope his brother does the same but it's not going to be easy getting past the best left back in the world by a country mile.
