Indeed. He always seems to be behind play. He needs to be a back up striker next season.
He’s not a target man but being played as one. Ten Hag subbed him off and started playing 5ft8 Amad as a target man instead. Hojlund didn’t play well but he’s being set up to fail by these dreadful tactics. We’re clueless in the final third and it isn’t Hojlund’s fault.
More than willing to give him next year, in hopefully a functioning team, and another striker or two in the squad
to rotate with.
14 goals isn’t too bad in his first season, get a couple more before the end of the season and it’s a decent return.

The teammate who passed him the ball most often today was Onana with 4 passes, then dalot with three and Bruno with two passes
Wonder if we’ll ever learn to just slide in passes for him to run onto.
Totally disagree, he’s a young forward in his first PL season and he’s setup for failure not success. Tactics won’t help him.
However I see areas where he could improve
And the biggest is where he runs. At times he’s literally a foot from the goal line waiting for a cross, wingers aren’t going to find you there. He needs a good run working with a top former striker like Ruud or RVP.

I was disappointed we signed him and was convinced that while talented, Hojlund is just too far from the first team level. I think that's still true, but selling him would be stupid - he surely shown potential and he still has plenty of room for improvement. Just get another, more experienced striker!
His teammates get too much blame . His style of play is similar to that of Haaland without the world class movement and the creativity from his teammates. But just like Haaland they don't get involved enough and they game can just pass them by sometimes. He or ten hag has no interest in coming deep and playing his teammates through.
He's a very good young player with a lot of potential, and the only attacker we have who should be an automatic selection next season.

When he first came in he was making those runs. He stopped because he never gets the ball, understandably so. Ten Hag also prefers his strikers to focus on linking play. Hence Weghorst, Haller. I actually think his biggest weakness is his hold up play. Although he does shield his man off, he's so focussed on the man that he forgets the whole point is to control the ball and it makes his touches sloppy.
He shouldn't be expected to lead the line week in week out by himself.

There were a few times Bruno and others could have passed it to Hojlund's feet on the edge of the box in the first half but instead chose to go wide and let Garnacho dribble into a player for the 10th time.
He's not been great but it must be so fecking frustrating to not even get passes to feet or more than a handful passes/crosses into the box.

Same old story. Always late on the ball and late to do correct run. It is strange to see striker on this level (no matter how old he is) with this bad positioning and game reading.

It's gambling on mistakes and spills, moving before they actually happen because you can see the chance that could come from it. When he was on form, he was making these gambles. I was hoping he would start doing it again after his goal on Wednesday, but he didn't look right today.

I said this on the Wed post-match thread having watched him closely at OT, he made 15+ runs in the first half and not once was the ball played into him.
ETH dumb tactics of going to wide players that always try to dribble past 3 players, invariably losing the ball. Relying on wingers to conjur something and score, a striker in ETHs team is there just to tire the defenders!

They haven’t forged the same kind of understanding that Bruno did with Rashford or Martial or even Casemiro last year when he kept popping up with goals. If it’s not Bruno then it’s nobody. He might get a rebound off the keeper from a shot from Antony Garnacho or Rashford. Antony will cross it to the back post but
Rasmus isn’t that kind of player. Disappointed for them all today.
Amad had less than half the minutes today but still had more touches, twice as many complete passes, managed an actual shot on target and set up a chance. Hell he even managed to win a header. So no, Hojlund wasn’t better than putting Amad up top in any measure.
It's been like that for a while in here.
Definitely areas he can improve but the underlying problem exists with or without him in this team.
I know Greenwood isn’t flavour of the month, but guaranteed if he’s up top in this team he still makes things happen and creates chances for himself and others. Point is it’s not just down to the team, he’s not helping himself with poor movement and constantly losing physical battles with even smaller defenders.

Just wastes so much time wrestling the opposition and rarely seems to find himself in any sort of space.
Maybe his runs can be better, buts it's clear no fecker passes to him and that can't all be down to where he does or doesn't run, I can't remember today where we had the ball wide and just put in a decent ball into the box all we ever try and do from wide is cut in and shoot its fecking predictable as feck

I think he needs a manager and striking coach to work heavily with him on the training pitch. You would think or hope this is happening...

I said when we signed him that there was a bigger chance of him being back at Copenhagen in four years than him being a top-class striker. I’m starting to fear I’ll be right.
Correct, it isn’t Hojlund’s fault, ‘partly Hojlund’s fault’.
I have no idea why so many seem determined to excuse Hojlund completely for the faults in our team, the faults in our attack etc when he’s the darn centre forward in said team. We’re not failing independently of him, he’s very much a part of our attacking failure due to how he as the centre forward isn’t doing enough.
I think it’s fair to say that we’d probably look better in the final third if our striker held the ball up better, linked up better and had better movement. He’s not some complete victim as is being portrayed.
Our best strikers post SAF have been Ibra and Martial (Cavani special mention). Both strong, technical linkup players.
The Lukaku and Hojlund poacher types are not a great fit for anything more than a sub striker for us. That being said, not too late for Hojlund to work on his overall game.

Its bizarre, but very typical of the fandom. Certain players will get the majority of the criticism, others the excuses. Strikers are not just there to be fed tap ins.

I think he's done well. 14 goals I'dve taken that. Noone passes to him. He gets minimal chances, it's not like he misses as many as garnacho or rashford.

He's had a decent first season and a good goal return, all things considered. My concern with him is that technique is not something that really improves with age and experience, and in that regard he appears a bit limited.
