Well he's on that flag on the kop with Shankly and Paisley. That European cup has turned him into a legend, rightly or wrongly.
I do understand his status as a legend due to the '05 European Cup, of course I do, I just don't understand those putting him up there with Shankly, Paisley or even Fagan (maybe more as a member of staff & an assistant manager, but still).Well he's on that flag on the kop with Shankly and Paisley. Benitez pulled off a miracle in Europe '05, did very well in Europe generally (final '07), and was a very decent manager.
I just don't understand calling him 'the Shankly of our generation'. If anyone deserves to be called that I think it's Kenny Dalglish.
eh??
the man who won trophies with an inherited team and then proceeded to turn it into crap with David Speedie and similar "quality" - then left Souness with said pile of crap and all the blame. Ludicrous to compare him with Shankly or Paisley
Dalglish also signed the likes of Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge, Mcmahon, & Houghton during his time as manager. All key figures in one of the best Liverpool sides I've ever seen. We were top off the league when he resigned in January 1991. Souness took over & promptly sold Peter Beardsley, replacing him with the far 'superior' Dean Saunders. Also bringing in similar quality players in the shape of Julian Dicks & Paul Stewart.
Kenny's side won 3 titles & 2 FA Cups in 5 years. He fully deserves to be held in high esteem at Anfield. If Alex Ferguson could have paid someone at the time to bring Liverpool to it's knees. He'd have struggled to find a more competent man than Graham Souness.
In general I agree, and re-reading my earlier post I see I managed to completely arse up the point I was trying to make.eh??

i hate the little ginger c*nt he a snidy little c*nt who need his legs snapping
Hopefully today
Agreed. However where it comes to succession planning, Dalglish failed so miserably leaving Sounesss with a team full of 30 year olds.
To make things worse for Souness, as soon as he took over, UEFA introduced the 4 foreigners rule, whereby the number of non-Englishmen in european competitions could not exceed 4 players in european competitions.
So in order to replace his ageing squad Souness had to chose from an even more restricted pool of players. Maybe that's why he ended up signing the Dicks and Ruddocks of this world.
Kenny Dalglish resigned the day after a 4-4 draw with Merseyside rivals Everton. The team that played that night had just 2 players over the age of 30 (Bruce grobbelaar 34 & Glyn Hysen 32). This side was sitting top of the table when Kenny packed it in. Having also won the title the previous year. Graham Souness replaced the ageing Hysen with Mark Wright. One of his better buys it must be said. He also had the luxury of having a talented young lad called Steve McManaman breaking through into the first team. He was followed a season or two after, by Robbie Fowler.
Souness's problem was that he tried to fix things that didn't need fixing. He wanted to change things that didn't require changing. He got rid of good players, & replaced them with inferior ones - He had an awful lot going for him when he took over. To blame Dalglish for this guy's shortcomings, is way off the mark.
Surprise half time RAWK trawl!

my translation of Mavinga's interview
Cris, what is your situation three weeks after having won the Euro Under 19 Championship with France?
I'm disappointed. I thought that because of this success and because of what I did on the pitch that I would have the opportunity to train with the first team and play some games. But a new manager arrived. Roy Hodgson, who replaced Rafa Benitez, is in the process of changing the organization of the club: he's trying to favor English players to the detriment of foreigners, contrary to his predecessor. He clearly declared that he wanted to make Liverpool an English club again. That feels like the reserves to me. It's a choice, you have to respect it.
Have you been able to talk with him about it?
Yes, quickly. He didn't tell me much. The problem is that there are way too many players training with the first team: 28! So, although Rafael Benitez had allowed me to train with the first team during the second part of last season, now I'm back with the reserves. Frankly, I don't appreciate it. I'm disappointed and annoyed. So I want to leave, why not on loan. I like the club, but if the situation makes me leave, I will do it. I'm not asking to play an entire season with the first team. I just want the possibility to train with them, then later to have a little bit of playing time. Last season, I was clearly progressing, and if I remain with the reserves, it will slow down. I hope to have the chance to find a club.
Do you have any offers?
In France and in England. But it's difficult, given the situation with the market. Furthermore, Liverpool aren't too keen on loaning me. If I don't leave this summer, I hope that I will be able to do it in January, if my situation doesn't improve from right now. What is sure is that I will never give up. I'm not going to stop working, even if I stay with the reserves. I want to reach a good level and I will give it my best.
I m not saying that dalglish is to blame for everything. Also you failed to mention the new '4 foreigners' quota introduced by uefa which restricted the pool from which new signings could be chosen.
I still laugh at those scousers who went out had had DICKS written on the back of their shirts....comedy gold
Considering Kenny left Souness a few young lads in the shape of Redknapp, McManaman, & Fowler. In my book, that's a pretty good legacy. All became England international players too. So I'm not too sure where you're coming from on this one.

Let us never forget Rafael Benitez and what he did for us. A fighter full of guts and passion. A gentleman full of class and dignity. A football manager full of intelligence and pure genius. A Legend.
Treat him well Massimo, or we will burn the San Siro to the ground.
Adios Rafa, buena suerte.

Suffering from Insomnia, hitting the bottle, depression, visiting the doctor a few times due to stress brought on due to two men from America killing and taking the piss out of something that we hold very dear to our hearts like its a family member. Enough is enough already, Im very very tired, weary, hurt, angry, upset, been on the verge of being an alchy, due to their sheer contempt for our football club. But you wont find the answer in the bottom of a bottle because the problem is still there the next day, and the next year and the year after that.
True - but there really isn't much they can do, barring direct action and protesting. If I'm the bank, i'd be pissed to know that my precious mailbox filled with those filthy boycott this and that.
Like feck I care about football club, maybe some of us will take extra measures, but then again we're paid to do jobs, and telling me to boycott everything to save a football club I have no attachment whatsoever was ridiculous at best.
They've become restless and obsessed with the emails campaign

I bet the police does.Nothing beats the greaser used to ride his hog around our town with Hells Angles on the back of his jacket.
Granted this is before all the transfers have been worked out (they've lost a net 9 players I believe, although some are on loan), but 62 players is Rafa's biggest legacy - literally. QUOTE]
Didn't both United and Arsenal have a total of around 70 players cited after the squads were announced for this season, including of course those who didn't need to be registered?
