i'm with dunk on this. england can win the next world cup if we just pick a load of random englishman. crock every single player in every single game or stab them or something, collect our prize at the end of it and then when all our players get banned for life afterwards it doesn't matter as they were only brick layers and accountants.
Cantona behaved like an idiot and United fans welcomed him back with open arms once his ban was up. I don't know any fans who wanted him sold, or banned for life for what he did. That's the reality of the situation - whether you acknowledge it or not.
Some fans may have been critical - doesnt mean they didnt still want him at OT.
I'm not saying this is the same as Suarez, nor am I saying that Liverpool fans are right to defend him because clearly they arent, I'm just telling it like it is. Fans will back their own players, especially when said player is the best they have and vital to their ongoing success.

Cantona kicked a fan in retaliation, once. Definitely not right thing to do but it was provoked reaction and he apologized and hence was welcomed back. Nothing which Suarez has done is provoked or is in retaliation for someone trying to get reaction out of him. It is not even like Zidane's headbutt case. The bastard in discusssion here himself goes and bites and racially abuses players and tries to get reaction from them instead to gain unfair advantage.

Just on the Cantona point: he actually did get into fights with the public a few times before the Palace incident, in France and on tour for France (one case almost creating a diplomatic incident during the cold war in Poland ), but I feel given how he was disciplined after the kick, it doesn't really matter. I'm just defending his stupidity because I want him to play in the next round. He doesn't deserve to play though.
I didn't realise he had attacked and kicked the public previously…probably taken into account and why he was given one of the longest bans in domestic football.
Additionally, in terms of the Palace incident, Cantona was racially abused and retaliated. Whilst not condoned…many people understood why he reacted so badly.
Suarez was the instigator of both the biting and racist comments so hardly easy to rationalise or have sympathy with.
Again while I agree many fans protect their own…they are two totally different situations that bear little comparison.

An important point. The context - of who he was kicking and why he was provoked into doing so - matters a great deal.
Would United fans have backed Suarez to the hilt had he played for us and committed identical acts (the Evra incident plus the biting)? I'd like to think NO. But tribalism makes blind and I'm sure some United fans would've come up with excuses for him rather than condemning him fully. But the way Liverpool's fans have backed him, in such numbers and so vocally...I don't see United fans doing that. But feck knows, it's easy enough to say without either proof or pudding.

Crucial difference though is that Cantona was reacting to racist abuse flung his way, which makes him an anti-hero. As with all anti-heros, the means may be questionable but the motive is not. Thats enough for United fans to accept him. Indeed in many people's eyes its a central part of the mythos.
Suarez on the other hand is just a straight up villain. Diving, swearing, cheating, biting, racist. No real way of rationalising that, other than saying you dont think those things are all that bad.

Rightly or wrongly a certain number of fans will back their own players to the bitter end - often because (as in this case) they know the club are heavily reliant on said player and desperately hope it'll all blow over.
As I have repeatedly said, I'm not defending what he's done, or justifying people defending him - just stating that I'm not, and will never be surprised that fans defend their own. It's always happened and always will.

Players (wrongly) get dogs abuse off opposition fans - he just kicked off because he'd already lost it and was looking for someone to take it out on.
And the irony is here, that you're actually trying in a small way to justify it with reference to "provocation" - which illustrates the point I'm making.
When you actually look at it he dived feet first into a crowd of innocent bystanders, including women and children to try and stove some morons head in, having to be dragged back by teammates - because a bloke was shouting at him. Hardly justified and frankly if that were Suarez or Barton they'd be chased out of the PL these days.
I've still never seen anything like it to this day, and the club, and fans welcomed him back with open arms, cheering him when he scored on his first game back like a hero.
