They would say the exact same about their defenders and call ours catastophic.
Simple fact is neither are very good.
For us at least. Evans is decent on the ball and capable of putting in excellent performances but cannot maintain it consistently throughout a year and will inevitably get injured. Capable of having brainfarts too often as well meaning we'll inevitably have a goal conceded because of him at least once next season.
Jones and Smalling are unknown. Yes potentially they could be excellent but it's a fair bet that they could just as easily turn out to be complete duds. Smalling is horrific on the ball and never radiates confidence so you always believe he'll make a mistake.
Jones is perenially on a one man mission to win the game so goes flying into challenges like a giant, stupid dog chasing after a cat. I'd be surprised if he has a single brain cell in his head and therefore he's a liability. More likely to get himself permanently injured than he is to turn into a world class defender in my eyes.
Factor in Rafael's injury history and also the fact that he will never, ever lose the rash side to his game (it'll be minimised at times so he'll turn in some brilliant performances but is always a mistake away from a crisis) and Shaw being 18 and therefore unproven despite his obvious talents and I'd say we're all set to concede a shitload of goals this season.
We'll also need to make sure we don't just play two in front of them because we'll be wide open as we have been for the past few years. Teams will just gang up and run through us.
