Each to their own I guess but I think there is something in the theory that the more you encounter rival fans in your everyday life adds to the rivalry. Make no mistake, the mate of mine I quoted can't stand Liverpool but he doesn't have an almost daily interaction with their fans like he does with City's. The Manchester-Liverpool rivalry does go back a long way but I don't think it started manifesting itself in football until at least the 1960's when supporters became more tribalistic in general. City fans have had their problems with the Merseyside clubs down the years too, particularly in the 70's and 80's but while Liverpool wasn't exactly a walk in the park we've had more issues and incidents with Everton fans.
Gorton isn't really as blue an area as it used to be - I think 20 years or so of United success while City weren't even close to challenging has seen City's support diluted in that and other areas.
Fair enough, ive been out of the area 10 years. When i was growing up noone really cared about City. It was all about beating Liverpool. And you'd be lynched in Gorton if you wore a red shirt.
