I have to agree; for putting Butt in there to defend, he really didn't. Zidane is from a different planet, United cannot afford to give him time on the ball. And ffs put two strikers for the return leg.

My team for 2nd leg:
Barthez
Wes Rio Silvestre O'Shea
Becks Phil(Veron 1st choice if fit) Keane Giggs
Ruud Ole

Fair point.

We've still got 90 mins to go, if we play to our standards we've got a good chance...

cheer up!!</strong><hr></blockquote>

I'm not feeling especially depressed about it - just frustrated at bringing on a striker in the bleedin' 87th minute!

Is Butt not playing in the 2nd leg ?

Don't see a reason to play Becks on the right. Roberto Carlos will just eat him alive again. Play Diego there, or Ole with Diego upfront with Ruud. Becks can play on the center or not play at all.

OK ?</strong><hr></blockquote>

Now that really is unkind.

BTW, does McManaman ever play for Real ? What's he got to do with the team we played today ? different worlds.

Must admit that i was gutted after 2nd and 3rd goal.. but that goal gave me some hope..

Sometimes you have to hold ya hand up and admit the other team was awesome at times... 3-1 looks better for us than it was.

We'll play better next week, and i hope they play their normal game.... ;)

Great idea. The return leg is supposed to be in two weeks time, but we should play it next week. They won't know what hit them

And who comments for Real? McManaman!

This is some joke, isn't it?

madrid at times were brilliant at going forward
but at 1-3 we have a chance.
They could have scored more but so could have we.

loook on the bright side we still have more chance of winning the european cup then Liverpool or Arsenal

before the bindippers and gillespie put their two penith in

Hopefully he will be. (and Phil Nev perhaps with no Scholes or Veron)
Just that Butt's invisible to lots of posters. He's not creative - just wins the ball, and passes to someone who is. He knows his job.
Fortunately managers, including SAF, aren't blind.
In any case, we'll need a fair slice of luck, everyone playing their best game, and oodles of passion to have any chance of going through methinks.

I expect to see Ricardo's quotes on the match in the Spanish media then.

Beckham looked good today. Good enough to sit next to old Steveo on Real's bench anyway.

He didn't win shit tonight, never saw him make one tackle. Not any other United player for that matter.

Zidane was out of this planet tonight, but one player that doesn't get the full accolades is Raul. Brillinat fecking goal (the second).

Ronaldo slowed them down a little, I thought.

Ronaldo was absolutely pants. You could hear the crowd thought so as well.

er.... did you see the state he was in?

it's fecking sad
Veron is our man, bring him back , and where the hack was Keane (oh, and the other lads)!!!
Oh gosh..i can't believe he used that line up without Keane!!!
We can do it! a home game with 2-0 next time!!!
<img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />
i fecking hate Real now, before was 100%, now's 200% and more!

Gutted. Angry. Frustrated. But also recognising we were beaten by an outstanding team tonight. Shades of Barca.

We can do it at OT but Real are a history-class team. No doubt about it, we have had our pretensions well and truly exposed tonight.

There are reasons to be hopeful for the second leg. We are still in the match. The goal by Ruud could be massivley important.

Watching Real Madrid play the way they did in the first half no team i've ever seen who could have stopped them scoring atleast once. I think the way they played shocked us and some of the team had a bit of a crisis of confidence. The goal gave the team a lot of hope and we really picked up the tempo.

They may be the best team in the world but they are vunerable at the back and we can beat them. We will miss Scholesy and Gaz but it should mean that JOS will get a start. He played really well when he came on.

We had 20 minutes in the 2nd half when we outplayed and the big 5, with the execption of Zidane looked like they couldn't be bothered. Hopefully Seba will be fit and if Giggsy and Becks can pick their game up and Ruud keep the intensity and passion he showed tonight then we have a great chance of turning the tie around.

All is not lost - KEEP THE FAITH <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Basically, Real tore us to pieces for long periods of time. It was impressive to see, however much it also pissed me off. Rio and Wes didn't seem entirely confident together--or at least not against Raul, Figo and Zidane. My back 4 next time would be Wes at RB, Silvestre and Rio at CB and O'Shea at LB.

United need to have two strikers for the next match, but at the same time, they need to give Giggs the freedom to roam around the midfield.

Here's the difference btwn Real and MU in today's match and many of the matches over the past three years.

Passion... Real had been attcking the ball the entire 90 min. Both clubs have the talent, but MU doesn't always have the drive.

RVN and Rio are individuals that may be able to ignite that passion once again...but it just seems that since the treble year, crap like the 3rd Real Madrid goal happens too much. Standing around watching the other team walk all over them.

IMO MU played approx. 10 minutes of good ball. from min. 60-70.

oh gee, thanks for not exaggerating.

Anyone else notice, during the game, that people in the crowd had loud-speakers!?!?!? Weird trend that is

And annoying! <img src="graemlins/annoyed.gif" border="0" alt="[Annoyed]" />

obviously manutd players' skills are no match with real madrid's. we will lose the match 2 weeks later. the only hope is veron, in manutd only he knows how to play continental football.

here's hoping to veron being available to play although word is he wont pull up in time.

im just so disappointed with the guys, i mean look at us, leading up to this game in europe we couldnt do a thing wrong, finishing top of our groups in both stages, knockin off juve in turin, we were on top of europe.
then look at real, just scraped through by a point, even were held at home by lokomotiv moscow in he second phase, and yet they can still come out and raise their game to a whole new level.

man utd r capable of winning no doubt, lets just hope we also can raise our game to a new level, or else itll game set match real madrid.

How can you hate Real? From a purely footballing aspect, they are a joy to watch.

“Shock and Awe” seemed to be Real’s objective in the first half and the sure as hell did exactly that.

No gloat from me. There’s no shame in being completely outplayed by Real Madrid. I think every single football player in the world can imagine what your boys went through for much of the game.

To illustrate how good Real was, I’ll tell you how I saw the game. I went to an Irish pub with TV3 on. The crowd: half English/Unitedfans, a couple of Spaniards and the rest mainly neutral Belgians who wanted to see a good game. I never heard so many “oh” s and “ah”s then during this game. Their sheer brilliance was just delightful to watch.

No, it had nothing to do with you being their victims. Who plays the role of victim was completely irrelevant.

I do think, however, that you’ll have a chance. They do leave acres of space in their defensive central midfield position and they’re pretty awful on high balls and headers. I do fancy you to score 2-3-4 goals. The thing is, I cannot see them not score 2 or more themselves.

Well we were just not good enuff yesterday and the only players in my opinion who were really good were Van nisterooy and Rio, all the rest were just pants and especially beckham, whom we expect more from, even if he goes to Real he will end up on the bench just like macca.

I really think that even forlan would have done a better job than keane yesterday and its about time fergie starts putting faith in the forlans, solksears and O'shea and bench people who are not playing well. In the return leg we need to play with 2 up front, with scholes and gary neville out, put O'shea on as right back, or if silvestre is still injured put O'shea at left back, and play keane and Rio in the middle and Wes at right back with becks, phil neville/forlan, butt and giggs on the left and solksear and Van up front.
