Capcom has talked about what it hopes to do with Resident Evil 7, confirming the existence of the game in the process.
Speaking to MCV, former Capcom marketing boss Michael Pattison explained that fan feedback to the lacklustre Resident Evil 6 means the next entry will mark a return to the survival horror roots of the franchise.
"We have obviously seen the consumer response and the PR response," he said. "There was some great positives out of that, but it was a mixed bag, as we saw from the review scores. We have got to take that on-board, we can't ignore that, and we have to take that onto the next game when we make the next Resident Evil.
"With Resident Evil 6 specifically, we probably put too much content in there, there were comments from consumers that said it felt bloated. The Leon missions went down very well, and because we did Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS, there was a cry out for us to focus our attention on survival horror, rather than be too many things to all people. You’ll find where we go next will likely be more targeted at our core fanbase.
"A lot is said about the saturation of this zombie, post-apocalyptic survival horror. But it is still alive and well. The Last of Us shows a good direction of what the consumers want. Tomb Raider as well, we spoke to R&D and they looked at that and they enjoyed that experience. I think that proves there is still a strong market for that sort of content."

So what do we think? 1-3 were all great games IMO but they haven't aged well I don't think when you go back to them. 4 is the absolute pinnacle in the series, and 5 and 6 whilst good action games didn't really feel like a Resident Evil at all. I think they definitely need to strip away the partner you've been given in the last 2 iterations. 6 had a great variety of enemies, but as I said it just wasn't an RE for me. 5 was the worst in the entire series by far.

Agree with most of that. Except about 2 and 3, both were pretty dull. The remake of 1, and Veronica are the best of the classic style (I was a bit bored of Zero) and 4 is obviously the best of the new bunch. 5 was shit, 6 ok but nothing more, though revelations on the 3DS was surprisingly good and better than 5/6. Thing is they lost the plot after 4 with all the short, easy content bollocks. Just give us a mansion, shit loads of zombies, some puzzles and an actual advance on the story again and we'd be happy!

I really did like 3, first time playing through Nemesis was just relentless. You never felt you were quite safe and it really did feel like a survival horror.
Never played Zero or Revelations.

Btw Elvis, have you played the remake of 1 on the gamecube? If not, you are really missing out.

Yes, I've got it for the Wii actually. It really is excellent. All the extra things they added complimented it really well too.

Get a copy of Zero if you like these, it's around a tenner on Ebay. You should like it, it's like the remake graphic/presentation wise and yies together all the others. Revelations is a hit too, though I haven't played the HD version. I imagine it's lost a lot of the creepiness on the consoles though.

I liked 2's B scenarios which added another level of creepiness with the presence of Mr X and 3 was decent although I thought it dragged on longer than it should have.

Veronica's probably my least favourite of the classic RE games, it didn't really feel like a Resident Evil game but considering the shit that came after it, (excluding 4) I was probably harsh on it at the time.

Like Silent Hill and Final Fantasy, this once great series needs to be taken behind the shed and put to rest for good.

Alone In The Dark, Resident Evil and Silent Hill... all the brilliant series went downhill from a certain point, indeed.

Not too excited about this next-gen Resident Evil. After what I saw in the indie games department (Amnesia:The Dark Descent) , it blew my skull into pieces, not to mention that few other horror gems are coming this year. ('Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs', 'Routine' and 'Outlast')

Resident evil revelations was good, the Leon campaign in 6 was also good (though got worse towards the end) the only one that was truly bad was 5 but I think that's just because of people's expectations when it comes to resi evil, as an action game it's solid.

I liked 2, I must've unlocked all its secrets and all. But yeah 1 was great and the remake was fantastic too, but it was only a remake. I didn't think much of 3...and subsequent ones haven't been proper Res Evil games. As for 7, I'm sure they always say the next one will go back to its roots to appease the fans. I loved the sound of the shotgun and the shite cheesy acting too!

I've only owned and played Resident Evil 4, I'm a bit of a wuss so don't really like playing survival horrors, but RE4 had just enough action to draw me in, and ended up being one of my favourite ever games. The films are shit, may I add.

The remake deserves more credit than that. The graphics still stand up today and the way they incorporated gameplay elements from the later games plus the original (and best) puzzles and extra areas easily makes it the best of the classic style. Zero is good too.

I like 2 and 3, though they are a little more arcadey than 1. I'm just playimg Veronica now, I'm liking it but it seems extremely linear compared.

Resident Evil 4 was the best and by some distance as well. I bought a Gamecube for that game alone and I wasn't disappointed, its still one of my all time favorites.

Yeah the remake looked amazing perhaps the best looking Res Evil to date, it looked miles ahead of other GC games, then again it wasn't fully 3D. And indeed 2 was arcadey, it was also easier than the original but it was still great fun to play. I liked the fact you could play two characters despite it being virtually the same storyline/gameline.

Resident Evil 4 was the shit. Never owned it but I saw most of it and it was so absorbing. Only ever had the first Resident Evil on the Playstation (didn't play too much of it), but the 4th was a completely different article and far more to my tastes.

I hope they go back to the survival horror style. Anyone who enjoys this kind of Resident Evil over 5 and 6, I'd suggest giving Resident Evil Revelations a try. It was originally only for 3DS, but it's now been ported to all formats and you can pick it up for sub £20. Very good game and back to the roots.

Was 4 more like the originals in terms of gameplay or the precursor to the last few games of the franchise?

Nah it was done better than any of the others both past and present. It's often rated in the top 10 games of all time, It's got an average score of 95% on Gamerankings.
It's in my top 5 games anyway I fooking loved it.

It was the perfect balance between survival horror and arcade action IMO. Great fun to play, interesting that their initial idea for RE4 ended up turning into the Devil May Cry series.

All this talk of 4 has whet my appetite for it.

The gameplay on 5 and 6 is tight and pretty good for that type of game really.

They just captured nothing of what Resident evil used to be. Stick any old characters in, make the story about any old end of the world scenario and it wouldn't change a jot.

As been said, resident evil revelations (especially the 3DS version) is much more like it.

Anyone played the demo? Expected something to jump out at me from every corner, the series has definitely taken a different direction and hopefully the full game can produce the atmosphere of the demo. Will definitely be buying.

Playing the demo I got a P.T. or Outlast vibe. I didn't see anything Resident Evil about it. I hope it's different in the full game because as much as I like Outlast and P.T. demo type games, there's no need for another one of those, especially not under the Resident Evil moniker.

Is this the demo on the xbox one now? feck that, I played about 5mins and decided to turn it off  Maybe in daylight.

 Good to know.

I still struggle to get through the very first Resident Evil(HD Remaster).

This is proper mad, I only gave it a quick go, was only planning on checking out the graphics really. But walked through about 3 doors and nope'd the feck outta there. I didn't even have the surround sound on which will proper feck me up. I think I'll wait till I get the PSVR and some good quality surround sound headphones, unless I can use normal surround sound with the PS VR. Also going to buy some adult diapers too.

I played it in surround sound headphones, didn't make much difference. I'd have shat my pants either way.

I've it pre-ordered. I love me some Resident Evil, but I think Alien Isolation may have broken me slightly. I made noises while playing that that I'm not one bit proud of.

That's what I did with the Remaster, Lord knows why I downloaded the 7 demo

Played the first hour or so. It's really good so far and seems to be capturing a bit of the RE1 magic in a really weird way, I'm not sure how to describe it. Really enjoying it despite the fact I may have ruined my underpants.

Having some graphical glitches that are a bit distracting but nothing game breaking.

On console? Bastards won't release it on PC until 5AM because they are pandering to the bloody yanks!
