That's actually a terrible article.

I've only just read about the bonfire chant in an article this morning so pardon me for entering this late. Why are the articles referencing it so recent btw? I don't recall the media reporting racial chants immediately after the match. Maybe the numbers involved were few but even so it is completely unacceptable, they should be outed and if as i assume members of the official supporters group, be expelled from it.
Ollie Holt had an article on it the day after.
I guess you have to understand the meaning behind the word "bonfire." I can only guess that it has something to do with a certain Guy Fawkes and how he was a traitor. Perhaps the England fans thought he was a traitor because he didn't want to fly out and play, but was happily enough being paid to commentate on the same match in Qatar. This is my theory anyway.
As far as I'm concerned, he has made his choice not to play because of a certain medical treatment that he has before each game so, why don't he just retire gracefully and let the young uns have their chance. He has been a brilliant defender, a legend, but he is too old for the international scene, especially with a bad back that could go at any time should he try to play 4-5 matches in one month. Suffice to say, should England get to the World Cup Final, and he has been selected to play in the group stages and the first knockout stage, there is no way he would be fit enough to play the final so, why not give the younger players a chance, since it would be a good experience for them.
Ok, what the feck has Anton got to do with that?
And he deserves abuse for that? Because Hodgson didn't want to talk on the phone before announcing the squad, United as a club only found out on the day of the announcement too.
I think Hodgson's a fecking idiot, he can tell people on a tube what the situation is but he can't pick up a phone.
Ok, what the feck has Anton got to do with that?
Anything to add??? As far as I am concerned, there was no racial overtones in that whatsoever. Rio complains about that and does a drama queen, but is happy to laugh at someone calling a fellow professional a "choc ice."
I still fail to see why you don't make the connection that they are brothers.
If a song requires 2 people in it and Rio is the main one in question due to recent events, it would make sense for Anton to be the other, given there's no other adequate logical replacement.
Once again I reiterate I'm not defending the chants at all, just the idea their racist is a massive and unjust presumption.

Why not choose another song? It's not logical at all, I don't think it's outright racist but there are sinister undertones. I hope it's just football fans being spectacularly stupid as per usual.
Perhaps if he tweeted less and he might not have had this much heat. However, like Barton, when he tweets, he is inviting idiots to take the piss. If had kept a low profile like Paul Scholes then maybe, just maybe people might leave him alone. I would say exactly the same thing for Barton. If he stops using twitter and gets back to playing football then, he would not be having so many problems because of the things he comes out with. As the old quote goes:
""Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."
That's exactly what I was thinking when I was reading that.

Pull out of an England squad with a flaky excuse and the stigma will follow you for the rest of your playing career.
Rio Ferdinand is the man who will be remembered for turning his back on his country to take up a one-off role as a television analyst for Al Jazeera. Bad call.
It’s just ‘banter’, according to his official Twitter feed, but the snarling faces when he looks into the stands must hurt.
‘Rio Ferdinand, **** off to Qatar’ — with the emphasis on ‘****’ — was sung repeatedly at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea closed in on yet another FA Cup semi-final appearance.
It didn’t quite have the chill or the menace of the Chelsea headhunters, but they don’t like you much around here, Rio.
The Manchester United defender is a marked man, singled out for special treatment at Stamford Bridge after his ill-advised overseas trip.
Yesterday’s FA Cup quarter-final replay was the first time Ferdinand had been seen on the field since he pulled out of that England squad to face San Marino and Montenegro.
Chelsea fans just about kept it within the limits of terrace ‘banter’, but this will be the norm from now on. There was no hint of the distasteful ‘bonfire’ song that was allegedly sung during the 8-0 victory over San Marino.
We can be thankful for that but Ferdinand will feel the noise again on Monday when it’s the turn of Manchester City fans to fire it up at Old Trafford.
That’s Ferdinand’s life from here, counting down the days until he can lift the sixth league title of his highly successful playing career.
Even the Chelsea PA announcer appeared to wait just that little bit longer before he moved on to the next name on the United team-sheet when he named the sides. It was part of the pantomine, an intriguing sub-plot as the home fans took it out on Ferdinand at every opportunity.
They were always going to do that. After all, Ferdinand did give them an open goal when he pulled out of those World Cup qualifiers.
He was booed every time he touched the ball and taunted by Chelsea fans claiming the moral high ground at Stamford Bridge.
It has been five years since John Terry slipped on the turf at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow when missing the crucial shoot-out penalty in the Champions League final against United.
‘Viva John Terry, could have won the Cup, but he ****ed it up’ has been sung heartily by the Stretford Enders ever since.
They were at it again yesterday, reminding Terry of that miss when he had the chance to win the European Cup for Chelsea in 2008.
Terry — a substitute yesterday — can take it, thriving in the hatred from high up in the stands when he was sent to warm up midway through the first half.
This is life as a substitute for Terry, getting himself in a spot of bother with West Ham fans when he was warming up in Chelsea’s last home game.
One day, when he is long retired, Terry is the type of character who will be happy to share a pint and stop for a natter with the fans. He has taken a ton of abuse throughout his career and yesterday, as he went through a complicated warm-up routine in front of United’s fans, was no different.
‘Where’s your racist centre half?’ has become a favourite with United fans and it got a good airing in this FA Cup tie.
Terry, who was fined by the FA for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand but cleared in court of being a racist, was right there in front of them.
Each time he sprinted to the corner flag there was a deliberate pause, a momentary look into the faces of the fans dishing it out from The Shed.
Terry seems to love it, almost encouraging the visiting fans to start a seesaw of songs from each end: ‘Viva John Terry...’ ‘One England captain’.
The sting had been taken out of his potential clash with Ferdinand when Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez named his captain on the bench. With the handshakes put to one side until the teams meet again on May 4, Ferdinand went on with the business of trying to win this game.
An FA Cup winner’s medal is the only prize of note at club level that is missing from his trophy cabinet in a career spanning three decades.
He is running out of chances to win it, but that cannot have been the only thing on his mind as he returned to Manchester last night.

"I’ve spoken to Rio," added Sir Alex. "At this moment in time, he’s more concerned about getting opposition for his testimonial game. He’s working on that for the moment.
"We want him to stay and obviously I’m sure his representatives will be discussing things with David Gill. I wouldn’t imagine that [moving abroad] would be the best thing for him."
He's being excellent this season, one of our best five players all campaign, hope he signs that year extension.
Rio Ferdinand is expected to agree a new one-year deal at Manchester United, with the understanding being he will do so before the end of the season. The defender wanted to focus on the club's bid to secure a 20th title and after this was achieved with Monday's win over Aston Villa, he will now discuss terms. Ferdinand wants to play on at Old Trafford for as along as possible so while United offer only 12-month contracts to players in their 30s, he is targeting two more years at least.
Ferdinand has serious offers to move overseas from China and the US. But with the 34-year-old being among United's best performers this season in what has been a relatively untroubled campaign fitness-wise, and with a young family, Ferdinand is keen to extend his 11 years at the club.
Paul Scholes, who has not played since 26 January due to a knee injury, is expected to announce his retirement at the end of the season, for a second time. The 38-year-old has made 19 appearances this season.
Earlier this month Bryan Robson, the former United captain who is now a club ambassador, suggested the midfielder would not seek to renew his one-year contract. "Scholesy I'm not so sure about," he said. "He's been having a few problems with his knee. So I think he might just call it a day.
"Only he can answer whether or not he may register again in case of emergencies. But because of his attitude and the way he goes about training it is good to have him around the place," he said.
Goal of the season was scored in training today.....in fact the best I have ever witnessed!!!!
De gea saved ball onto the bar, I caught it on my foot, flicked it over my head&volleyed it 2 nani who chested &smashed it in on the volley!
the best United performance of the season was probably Rio against Liverpool. Can't remember if it was home or away though.
