Rio Ferdinand

I cannot believe it! How can one team be so unlucky with injuries. Moreover, it is always one line that is out at a time; now it is our entire defense. Carrick is a decent option, but Jones, Smalling, Evans and Rio are all out - all of which would walk into most first teams. We should have more than adequate coverage in defense, but atm it is laughable.

I pity Rio as he has had a really good pre-season. Last season he was immense, and in pre-season he looked to regain some of his pace also.

We have to accept that he has ongoing back problems so he will always be susceptible to injuries of all sorts

Can we not just throw him into a stephen hawkins wheelchair and attach spikes and missile system for taking out forwards, similar to that of murder ball but just mixed with Death Race 2000

I'm not usually one to quibble about managerial decisions but, as others pointed out, it seemed a bit crazy the way Rio was playing more minutes than any other player on tour, despite the lack of cover in his position. With Vidic at an extremely high risk of some sort of niggle and Smalling/Evans both out for the beginning of the season Rio should really have been wrapped in cotton wool.

Yeah, I agree, thought he played more games then needed, similar to scholes really, he seemed to play a lot despite clearly being sharp enough. Times like this where you really appreciate what someone like O'shea offered to the squad.

Every single year, without fail, our entire defence at some point gets injured.

The amazing regularity with which this happens really needs to be looked at. Do we need to get an exorcist in, are we cursed?

Ive personally thought its the medics in the background more so than anything else. Didnt Fergie have a falling out with the old medical team a while back?

Part of me seems to think weve been having this kind of luck since then.

Ain't that the truth.

Jones and Smalling were supposed to replace O'Shea and Brown but theres' no chance of that that so long as they keep getting fecking injured.

most of the injuries suffered by our players are sustained on the friday training session.

can we just give our players a break on fridays now???

Was it that Di Salvo guy? I remember Fergie was pissed when he just left for Real

If we ever needed him it was against Everton, just so disappointed that he got injured leaving us short.

So peeved with him but i guess shouldn't blame him!!

Guardian is reporting he's aggravated his groin injury and will be out another two weeks, and is looking at the Wigan game on the 15th as a comeback date.

A shame for sure. Last year Rio was utterly brilliant, and the reason why he didn't get enough praise was because we just expect it from him and we didn't from Evans. Based on a couple of pre-season matches, I also think he has regained some pace - maybe because his back isn't bothering him too much recently.

World class CB - arguably the best I've ever seen when he was at his prime.

Got us going with that header off the post.

He looked like an absolute giant coming late into the box.

Once Rio and Vidic game a few more games, back in business.

Also looked like his presence at the corner caused RvP's marker to hesitate momentarily, allowing van Persie to steal a march on him and head in the winning goal. :D

Rio had obviously been watching Andy Carroll at West Ham - once Rio came forward "they were terrified of him!!" :p

I assume he's stopped going forward for corners due to his injury record, or maybe some concern about his ability to get back into position if we lose possession (let's face it, many of our corners pretty much involve handing the ball back to the opposition) but the decision to push forward was greatly effective, and maybe stopped us from being outnumbered contesting the corners.

Man United defender Rio Ferdinand has been handed a six month driving ban after he was caught speeding three times in five weeks on the same road. The former England captain was snapped in his Jaguar XJ speeding through a 30mph zone as he drove to and from training.( Daily Mail.)

:D Good news. He's not crocked again.

Class performance. Love how he makes defending easy.

Fantastic performance. One of the best we've seen from him for a while.

Can't believe he's 34 in a couple months.

Rock solid at the back today. Excellent performance.

Fcking amazing performance from him. He is just one of the best defenders in the world when fit and on form. Dealt with everything fantastically and kept suarez relatively subdued. All this despite picking up a knock.

Brilliant performance. Him and Rafael absolutely dominated their side of the defense.
