Rio Ferdinand

Great finish, he caught it pure. Vidic should get some credit for it because his lunge at the ball basically meant it broke for Rio to hit perfectly.

I find it fitting that one of Fergie's oldest servants of this current team got the goal.

Not doing yourself any favours, are you?

I have a little feeling he might retire, I was told that BT have announced him as one of their main pundits. is this true? because as far as I am aware they will only be showing one game a week and surely a awful lot of the time that will either be United game or the same day as United are playing. I don't know if I have been misadvised but the news worried me a bit.

Good to see him get the goal. Should just be a matter of process now for him to sign an new contract

The gunfinger celebration was fecking class. Shouted the loudest for that goal than any other and it probably the least relevant.

Perfect finish. Couldn't of wrote that shit today.

Was watching him struggle for pace at one point and thinking how old he is and then he pops up and smashes home the winner.:D

He's already said he isnt retiring.

Owen's the main pundit for BT, hes just doing bits for them like he does for his 5 mag thing.

I said to my Mam when Rio went up for a corner earlier in the game how brilliant it would be if he scored. But for him to get the winner late on was amazing, very few players have been more deserving than him. What a player he's been for us, one of the greatest defenders this club has ever seen.

Rio Ferdinand has dropped the clearest hint yet he intends to sign another contract and extend his stay at Manchester United.

The 34-year-old collected his sixth Premier League winners' medal and marked the occasion by slamming home the decisive goal in the 2-1 win over Swansea.

It was the first time he had found the net in over five years yet it was accompanied by continuing doubts over his future.

With his contract about to expire, there have been suggestions Ferdinand may take up a lucrative offer from abroad.

Outgoing United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that will not happen, and Ferdinand has said as much too.

"Manchester United has a bright future," Ferdinand told MUTV.

"The manager has left the club in great health and we are looking forward.

"We have a great number of good young players who are eager to win things and be successful and work hard.

"That is what the manager has instilled in these players. The work ethic has to continue if we are going to be successful.

"I would like to be part of that."

With Ferguson standing down in the summer, senior figures in the United dressing room are going to be pivotal in ensuring the transition into the David Moyes era is a smooth one.

Now that Paul Scholes has also retired no-one has more experience than Ferdinand, with the exception of Ryan Giggs who has also signed a one-year deal..

Ferdinand has been on top form this season too, underlining why Roy Hodgson wanted him in his England squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro.

It remains to be seen whether Ferdinand will receive a call on Thursday, when Hodgson is due to announce his squad for the friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

If Ferdinand is selected, he will link up with the status of a player who has won as many championships as Kenny Dalglish.

Not bad for someone who claims he would have been happy with just one when he arrived at United from Leeds in 2002.

"I dreamt of getting one when I turned up here," he said.

"I remember looking at Ryan and the others when I arrived. At that stage they had five, six and seven. I just wanted one. I thought I would be happy with that.

"But once you get it, you want another. You continue striving to succeed, to achieve things and win trophies.

"To get six is unbelievable. But that is the main thing at this club, you want to be successful."

Unlike Giggs, and the other home-grown members of the United squad, Ferdinand does have the experience of working for a different club manager.

Still, it is going to be a strange situation in the summer when the most familiar face at the entire club is no longer around.

"There have been a couple of emotional moments," said Ferdinand.

"The manager's announcement was like a bolt out of the blue.

"No one was expecting it. It disappointed a lot of us but I understand the manager's reasons.

"He has had a great stint and an unbelievably successful period.

"He instilled great qualities in the club and we must carry that on."

Great, I really think he will probably be our most important signing for next season.

I would really like to see him stay at the club once his playing days are over, as a coach or reserve team manager or something. He is such a positive influence in the dressing room and likes talking to young players. Seems to get along well with everyone.

Just hope he can stay injury free like this season so he can play an important part for us. The medical staff have done an incredibly brilliant job with him and hope it continues till he retires.

He said something along the lines of "we're gonna do it again next year" at the parade today didn't he?

a great signing. 30million well spent. still remember the frenzy when we got him from leeds. some said we overpaid for him. but this guy was only 23 by then and just had a wonderful world cup. 11 seasons later, 6 PL tittles, the champions league and 3 league cups. the only thing missing is the fa cup. hope he will stay and get it soon.

Bully Angelo into giving his medal to Rio

I can't see that happening, I think he wants to move into entertainment.

Next Ian Wright?

Can't forget THAT 2002 saga. The early reports we were interested, which seemed crazy because Leeds surely wouldn't sell, his terrific world cup, then transfer request, then the 'will he or won't he' regarding Leeds's summer trip to the far east or whatever (he ended up not showing up do to 'injury'), United's deadline to Leeds and finally face to face negotiations between Kenyon and Ridsdale...

Money brilliantly spent. We talked back then about getting good 10 years out of Rio. It's 11 now, and it ain't over yet.

I was at the parade yesterday and Rio was absolutely hilarious on the microphone.
I hope he stays. The experience of the older players will be essential to the younger players during the next couple of seasons.

the guy is a massive influence in the dressing room, you ask players who's the "biggest character", or "who's the loudest" or like yesterday "who's the rowdiest" and Rio's name always popps up.

Not only is he a terrific player and still valuable on the pitch, but he is so much more off the pitch that most fans don't even realise.

Now retired from International football.

It makes sense. If he has one season left with us why risk derailing it for England when he's only being considered because Terry screwed them over.
SAFs "best ever season" comments make a bit of sense now, he's basically telling Rio that managing himself this way has allowed him to play so many games for us at such a high level even if 'best ever' was a bit OTT.

I wouldn't play under a manager who picked a player who racially abused my brother over me for an international tournament and then attempted to justify the decision with "footballing reasons". I lost a lot of respect for Roy in that moment.

Between Hodgson's reluctance to pick him and his own decision to drop out of the squad when he finally got back in it, I doubt it's going to make any difference to how things would have panned out for the World Cup.

He must wish he'd done this a year ago when the fans and media were on his side, though.

United fans are on his side. I'm sure that's all that matters.

Good to see he has retired from international football. He is at a point in his career where we know he can't play every game and needs to be carefully managed. Do that well like this season and he is a key player for us still. We don't need random england call ups potentially disrupting our management plans for him.

Bloody hell, I have to stop reading threads from the bottom up. Heart failure.

Sensible from him 'Rio for England' is another media circus, less of those around Utd now the better.

I think he'll coach at west ham myself.

he still does a lot of charity stuff for the kids around where he grew up.

In these days of million pound salaries, mercenaries, spoilt prima donnas and general twattish behaviour a few players don't get the credit they should for things like this.
