Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

I'm pretty sure that those books were based on the conservative evangelical movement in the US. Mike Pence totally fits the bill. MTG is more of an opportunist grifter, not a true believer like Pence, but probably more dangerous nonetheless.

I don't know if I'd agree with that. She definitely seems like a true believer. Remember that before she was a politician she was chasing school shooting survivors down the street demanding to know why they were lying about there being a school shooting. She's the real deal.

Me. I always thought he wasnt as mad as people were making out. Now Im terrified he's fkn nuts. This is sounding like Hitlers purification programs.

I’m surprised it’s not got more traction.

It’s the most worrying thing I think I’ve heard from Putin since the war if I’m honest and if now makes me think that he won’t stop.

Anyone know anything about the azov bridge? Thought Russia mentioning it was just propaganda, but then recently on bbc it said that azov killed a general so must be a decently sized group.

I never expected him to stop. Even if somehow the peace talks were successful he will still have it in his head to return and he will. He’s an individual that needs to be stopped either through overthrowing him from within, someone putting a bullet in him or complete military defeat (including taking his nukes out of action).
for me this is about the rest of the world standing together and saying this type of action that Putin took isn’t acceptable anymore, whether you are Russia, China, Korea, or whoever

There's no way to take their nukes out of action, they're everywhere : in hidden bunkers, on mobile vehicules, in submarines, and even if he was to agree (he won't) to denuclearization, we'd have no way of knowing if the dismantled all of them, there's just too many.

Then he has to be taken out of a position where he has access to them

Kremlin says it will not take heed of court's demand to stop invasion

Russia has signalled it will not stop its invasion of Ukraine, after the United Nations' top court ordered it to halt immediately.
The court had said it was "profoundly concerned" by Russia's use of force.
The Kremlin has now said it will not pay heed to the order, accusing Western media of spreading "monstrous fake news" about the conflict.
It also hit out at the US after President Joe Biden labelled Vladimir Putin a "war criminal".
A spokesperson said Mr Putin is a "very wise and cultured international figure".
They also said the US has long bombed civilians and used nuclear weapons in Japan and the end of the Second World War, Mr Biden has "no right to lecture Russia".
Asked about reports of progression on peace talks with Ukraine, the Kremlin said Russian negotiators were putting "colossal energy" into the discussions - more than Ukraine.
Russia's conditions for a peace deal are "absolutely clear" and could stop what is going on "very fast", they said.

While completely expected, surely we can use this to kick Russia out of the UN security council as a permanent member? Then I don't have to listen to that bald guy spout nonsense on the international diplomatic stage anymore.

They don’t want to remove him as it’s a useful channel of communication - a way to get him and other leaders around a table.

They should definitely use it to limit Russia’s power or even limit his powers personally in the organisation while maintaining Russia’s position. Make it clear to the Russian people that Putin is the issue, not Russia.

Who says he doesn’t have PTSD?

The reason Chris Kyle kept going back on more tours in Iraq was because of the difficulties in rejoining society, and that’s from a guy whose book opens with a story that includes the line “I can stand before God with a clear conscience about doing my job”.

Even if I believed in God that's deluded as feck.

You know she’d be an Aunt in Gillead!
Oh she’d happily do that.
This i dont get. What the feck is their game here?

Now i get that these arseholes would love nothing more than to have Trump as an autoritarian leader and they have been leaning heavily towards authoritarianism for years now, but does really supporting Putin resonate among their supporters?

If its just some half baked scheme to try and undermine Biden its pretty foolish. "We support the genocide of the Ukranian people". Like what the feck kind of stance is that? How are you going to spin that?
The New Statesman published an article answering that very question yesterday. It does a better job than I ever could.

Old Testament god would be down with it.

Its every strongmans fear, but hes completely obsessed with it

Rambling about "purifying" your own people isnt something a confident leader would say

He's lost his mind. Imagine scripting, editing and deciding to go with that speech. How do these pathetic man babies get in power?
Old Testament god would be down with it.

That's the funniest bit about that lot. Quoting the old testament as if Jesus never happened.

Well, yes, but also, they’re allegedly the same guy, so you gotta take the wrath with the chill.

Either way, point from earlier being: even some snipers who fully believe in the rightness of what they’re doing get ptsd.

Oh, they exist. And, obviously, groups like that thrive in this environment, especially with the understandable rise of nationalistic sentiment in Ukraine. But they don’t have much political influence (while Putin tries to paint it like they are the ones that are in power in Ukraine if not holding the entire country hostage).

Yeah you'll get no argument from me on that front. It absolutely takes a toll on you.

A lot of the time that's what they do. Stay hidden for days watching somebody and shitting in a plastic bag. It's not often they're doing the American Sniper thing.
They may or may not watch their targets for a long time, but what you describe - watching them with their families, daily routines, other civilian activities are completely unrelated to the actual battlefield where a combat sniper operates.

I went down the rabbit hole of that article, and I ended up at a Michigan Republican saying this when talking about his daughter's viral tweet begging people not to vote for him:

“I don’t buy into this whole systemic racism thing at all,” he later said.

“I’m not saying there’s not hurdles to overcome. We all have hurdles to overcome. You know, as a quote-unquote rich, white, Christian male, people look at me a certain way. And it’s not always good."

Here's a first hand account of it. As the guy says, they get to know the daily routines of their targets through watching them for days on end. Families and other activities are often part of that as he says. It used to happen a lot in Northern Ireland where the targets were living a 'normal' civilian life until the balaclava went on and guys would be hiding in hedges for days on end watching them play happy families.

What you're thinking of is probably the overwatch job where they do pick people off without much forward planning.

That just about sums it up.

Remember though.... the Nazis are in Ukraine!!

This is all internal theatre. It sounds nuts to anyone from the free world but this is all for internal consumption by a population well versed in it and having had it for years and years from state controlled media. It's just noise and it's desperate.

In my opinion he's scared. He's dug a hole he can't dig himself out of because he's surrounded himself with yes men who tell him everything is fine and seemingly, that the Ukraine "military operation" would be a walk in the park. He's completely miscalculated the West's response, he was not prepared for the sanctions and the fact that theft of state resources under his rule has, on the back of it left the country in tatters. He has no end game because he can't occupy Ukraine. Russia is huge and he'll have to quell insurgencies all over the place, from potential breakaway states who now know the Army is useless.

Almost all Dictators in history go the same way - ultimately ending up in a position where keeping power is the only option, by whatever means and they get more and more desperate.

Fortunately, they usually end up on fire in a ditch when those around them realise they need to do what they have to in the interests of self-preservation. I think it's significant the Oligarchs are speaking out. That suggests they're not scared. Abramovich even flew into Moscow earlier this week.

Re. Odessa and those parts of the southern coastline still controlled by Ukraine but being attacked by Russian navy ....

Has there been any news re. the supply of land-based anti-ship missiles to Ukraine? Or are the Ukrainians not trained to sufficiently to be able to use these? Or maybe the systems involved are too bulky for easy transportation and supply? Does a anyone on RedCafe know about such things?

If he's turned into a recluse since Covid and is still largely as such now that suggests to me he's terrified of losing his own life.

In Putin's televised warning - what did he mean by people "who cannot live without...gender freedom"?

Isn't there gender freedom in Russia?

Just a little dig at the ‘woke’ and decadent West.

I remember seeing a documentary about some of the covert ops in Northern Ireland and one of the army/sniper guys was saying cows were a pain cos they're curious beasts and would come over and start smelling them. They were worried it would give them away. Rumbled by an inquisitive cow:lol:

Cows are bored feckless in fields. As soon as they see something strange or new off they march to investigate and have a bit of fun. Doesn't surprise me in the least and sounds like an episode of Dads Army.

A message from Arnie to Russia

Powerful video that will make Putin apoplectic, especially given that its subtitled and will get shared quite a bit across Russian social media and telegram channels
