Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Genuinely, how does this end?

Either there is some kind of coup in Russia or this.

Indeed it is.
But they were sure to drag her out of the way of the cameras into some kind of doorway.
To my mind. Those protesters are just as brave as the Ukrainian soldiers fighting against the Russian invaders.
Soldiers have guns . These people just go knowing theres a fair chance of getting their heads smashed and left for dead in an alley.

@harms how reliable is Novaya Gazeta?

Generally quite reliable. Plus, Peskov said that it’s a lie and the rule of thumb is to assume that every word that he speaks is a lie.

Seems like dissent is increasing all throughout the land.

Translation: Kadyrov for sending young people to war in Ukraine.

“You call people to go to Paradise, but you yourself do not go there. You don't want to die. You want to lie warm, eat delicious food and have fat conversations, ”Salah Mezhiev said.

Wow. The same guy claimed that the Chechens that are fighting in Ukraine are fighting for Koran and will become shahids in case of their deaths earlier.

It takes some courage to say that to Kadyrov especially since he’s apparently still in Chechnya.

Does he get arrested or conscripted at the end of the video?

Absurd that I have to ask the question, but hey, Russia.
Arrested. They gave out conscription notices (not sure what the right word is) to some of the detained men in Moscow last night though.

For participating in an uncoordinated protest. The police doesn’t take time to ask the detainees their opinion on the matter, if you were seen near a place where a protest happens and you’re not lucky to somehow evade them, you’re done for.

There’s a Belarusian anecdote which is quite apt in this case:
Police detains a guy on the street during the public protests against Lukashenko after he stole the presidential election. He’s furious:
— what are you detaining me for? I’m on your side, I voted for Lukashenko
— don’t lie, no one voted for him

Jokes from this part of the world are class. Some of the old Soviet ones still hold up nicely.

If true it’s complete madness. The old school Russian tactic off throwing manpower into situations to overcome it by numbers hardly worked that well when artillery was much less advanced. Now it’s going to be complete carnage.

I remember a friend of my grandfather telling a joke he heard when he was in Romania during the Ceausescu days. He was in the street with another man waiting for their ride. A women opens the window behind them. The man buttons up his coat and yells "lady close the window, all the cold is coming out". This guy told me romanians had tons of jokes about how shitty their lives were.

From IT specialist in the bank with no military background to a Nazi who will commit genocide on Ukrainian soil in an instant.

Putin doing his best Hitler impersonation

WashingtonCNN —
Russia’s military is divided over how best to counter Ukraine’s unexpected battlefield advances this month, according to multiple sources familiar with US intelligence, as Moscow has found itself on the defensive in both the east and the south.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is himself giving directions directly to generals in the field, two sources familiar with US and western intelligence said– a highly unusual management tactic in a modern military that these sources said hints at the dysfunctional command structure that has plagued Russia’s war from the beginning.

I think earlier there were reports that he was involved in the tactical decision-making at the level of colonel, bypassing generals etc.

Tragic but not unpredictable.
Very predictable, but hopefully stupid and dangerous - they must surely revolt, knowing that Putin does nothing to improve their lives and happily uses them to do his dirty work.

I'm not sure what an IT specialist is supposed to do on the frontlines in Luhansk.

Best to defect immediately, focus on providing humanitarian aid in Ukraine in exchange for asylum and never return. His life in Russia is now done.

That is fecking scary. I've scrolled through and it's too big of a list to falsify — and you'd need an access to an enormous amount of private information on all men in Russia (full name, passport number, address, date of birth) to compile it.

I am not saying it's fake but this data and more can be compiled for pretty much every person on earth from various data leaks that have happened during the years. So it has as big of a chance of being some random filtered list as the real draft.

Yeah, of course. If you have an access to police/military/FSB database you can compile such a list.

Tragic that many of them will never return home, all because they were forced to become cannon fodder to protect the megalomanical interests of one man.
Nobody is forcing them, if you’re a decent human being you take a prison sentence or hide if you can (Russia is massive and it’s difficult trace someone), now they’re heading for a certain death as Nazis. They would revolt if people would be dead against it 100%.

I think we should not underestimate the effectiveness of the propaganda. Many of those people most likely actually believe they are defending their country and will be seen as heroes.

Honestly, 15 years is a very long time - I'd not imagine that is an easy decision to make. Plus even if they could, I am sure they will be pressured into going anyway with stories of what would happen to them in prison. Hopefully a sizeable number defect.
