SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

So Imperial have revised their estimates on the increased transmissibility of the new strain, but doubled down on the conclusion that it is the strain itself that is more transmissible. No more headlines of “increases R rate by 0.9” but they still think it falls within the 0.4 to 0.7 range. Which is a pretty serious concern.

All the epidemiological modelling is waaaaaay over my head but this proviso is still being mentioned.

These higher infection levels took place despite the high levels of social distancing in England. Extrapolation to other transmission contexts requires caution, the researchers note.

They’re still working on the assumption that “high levels of social distancing” were in place in the run up to Christmas. I find that a bit of a stretch, to put it mildly. Remove that assumption and it’s possible the whole house of cards falls down.

It is spreading faster than any other variant in all the regions in England. And it doesn't get to that dominant in London by chance anyway (well anything is possible with probabilities but less than 1% chance). There is no debate anymore if it is more transmissable. It is. And those levels seem reasonable.

After I posted that I found a report that I could actually understand. It gives a secondary attack rate of 15% vs 9.9%. Which is about a 50% increase in transmissibility. Feck.

Yeah, sucks. I am not sure tier 4 is enough to even plateau the numbers. Doubt they are coming down. Probably needs March like real lock-down. And nobody should leave UK for the next 1-2 months unless absolutely necessary for work. It has of course spread already all over Europe, but less cases imported from UK the better.

The most surprising part of the u-turn is that they still haven’t fully done it to include secondary schools yet.i assume this will come in a few more days.

What kind of feckwit needs to ask that question?

They locked down hard and they locked down for a long time. With 100% compliance throughout.

Helped by the sort of infringement of civil liberties that would have the likes of Alison Pearson shitting bricks.

EDIT: I see the twitter thread you linked to has beaten me to the punch here!

Day 5 of isolation for us. The missus tested positive after we were both a bit rough over Xmas. It’s hit her way harder than me, she’s slept 12-14 hours each day on and off.
Feels like we’re climbing the walls, but we know it’s what we have to do.

Take care jimble, hope you both recover quickly

feckin hell. Well, I guess being married to a Covid nurse and having to teach & coach through this, I should expect to have a few scares of Covid and all... but it still does get nerve wracking.

As of about Noon today, I've lost all sense of smell. I've also got some pain in my sinuses and a general tired feeling all over.

But out of nowhere, I can't smell a single damn thing.

I wouldn't take that completely literally - there are degrees of "made" and there's a difference between made and available. Made could mean it's been processed and it's in its in the vat, or it's in its barrels, or it's in its vials ready to test and ship.

Available means it's in vials, with the correct paperwork, labelling and it's been batch tested. If the story I read this morning is accurate, then the half million on Monday refers to doses in vials ready to use and available to the testing locations.

In terms of bulk product there are supposed to be 5m doses in the UK. Not the 30m before the end of the year that one of the government ministers suggested a couple of weeks ago, but not a trivial quantity either.

This... after my wife just got her first vaccine dose.

If I somehow have it and give it to her now, I'll probably just dig myself a hole in the yard and lay down in it.

Shit - I hope you are ok.

So as I understand it the attack rate still allows for variation in the strains to be influenced by the behaviour of the people with those strains and the context they’re contracted in, and we lack proper lab testing to put a specific number on how much more infectious it is and explain some of the mechanisms behind it. They’re not RCTs with all that comes with that, and matching based on demographics can only take you so far. But yeah they seem pretty certain it’s something of a game changer, even if we lack some specifics.

Not sure what can be done about that. Might be time to become a hermit to help us stumble across the line.

Yeah if they close primary schools and not secondary schools then I don’t think their position is defensible any more. There is an abundance of evidence that says primary schools pose less danger than secondary schools in almost every way, going back months. If you think primary schools need to be closed, you have to think secondary schools need to be closed. The only difference could even partially explain things is the parent interaction. Maybe they’re finding parents spreading it a lot among themselves when picking up and dropping off kids at a time when transmission is so high. Because everything that happens outside of that is worse for older kids.

That sucks man. Hope it works itself out. Take care of yourself in the meantime!

That’s shit news. Assume you have it and behave accordingly. And get well soon!

I appreciate the well-wishes folks.

My wife’s work is getting me in tomorrow to get me tested, so I should know something by sometime Sunday/Monday.

I’m really the most concerned about her. Yesterday was our anniversary, and I felt perfectly normal then. Maybe the 1st dose of the vaccine will help her a bit if I do have it.

Ahh sorry to hear that, hope you recover quickly and fully soon. How do you reckon you caught it?

Well, assuming I do have it...

If not from my wife and her job, then likely from my job.

School has been out, but our state’s wrestling season runs through Winter Break, so I’ve been doing my coaching job and coaching the school’s wrestling team this whole time we’ve been out of school for break.

Are we getting some of that 50m?

If not, why do we have so few in comparison?
India is the king of vaccines in the world. Once they get up and running its truly impressive. They have they ability to manufacture so much more than anyone else.

Allison Pearson, you’d think she’d have had enough of showing herself to be an enormous tool...

She seems the type of idiot who says all these nonsensical things but will also jump the queue to get a vacccine. Kinda like Murdoch.
