SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

There's a lot of anti-vac style misinformation circulating about it on Twitter. Obviously it fits into their world view so they willingly choose to believe the nonsense.

People believing nonsense due to their inherent beliefs is hardly something new to humanity but it usually doesn't end well when taken to extremes

It's disgraceful that there's no Coronavirus briefing. Disgraceful.

The freedom thing is very strange to me I must say.

By living in society, you are following government mandated rules constantly, even in 'the land of the free'. Though it is kind of cute that they think they have constant free will to do pretty much as they please.

Johnson can't fire Jenrick because:

a) He himself is likely compromised, and
b) It would set a precedent of ceasing the Conservatives' quite shameless pursuit of donations from any disreputable quarter that offers them.

Again, also a closed matter.

It’s over.

Bloody reMoaners.

This is the nasty mess that they’ve made. This is what they’ve created. They have won. For now.

I sometimes wonder if it’s just the amount of alone time that sees me get so riled up.

Would this wash over me if I was spending 60 hours a week travelling, drinking and working?

They love their rules when they restrict access to abortion or gay marriage.

Obviously, there’s an absolute shitload of insanity to unpick there but let’s focus on the idea that wearing a mask is somehow dangerous? Are these American citizens actually trying to argue that a piece of cotton over your face will make you sick from lack of oxygen?

Of course not. Social media has made it easy for these loons to get together and circle jerk each other in to a frenzy. And when you have a population who have been stuck in a bubble of delusional American superiority you would be correct in calling them dumb.

To be fair, their police seem to have freedom to do as they please.

So WHO are concerned it’s coming back

  1. Europe sees its first increase in weekly coronavirus cases in months, according to the World Health Organisation
  2. The rise comes as countries continue to ease restrictions
  3. The WHO also says the pandemic has not yet reached its peak in Central and South America

That’s not good. Although it’s also entirely predictable. What never made sense was the idea you could ease restrictions and see cases continue to decrease!

Did they say which countries are driving this increase?

It’s literally coming on the bbc live thing at the moment, may be more detail later

Forums too. You won't hear many voices deviating from the norm on here..

Of course it's coming back. Why wouldn't it. But we can't sit inside for the rest of our lives. Best not read the news, solves a lot of these worries.

If you combine that with reducing - or even ending - the testing, this thing will be gone in no time!

I think America needs an extreme mortality rate to wake the feck up. If only there was some way that COVID-19 was smart enough to only attack the WH administration and all the Covidiots, like the ones protesting in Florida, it would just solve all the problems.

They love their rules when they restrict access to abortion or gay marriage.

Indeed, though I already know their response to that would be 'It's God's law'.

Not sure what they'd have to say about the myriad other, much more banal rules, written and unwritten, they have to follow to be a part of society though. Paying taxes, driving on the right side of the road, not jaywalking, not walking around naked, getting whatever the American version of an MOT is, paying to use public transport etc.

My next door neighbour “went out with the lads” at the weekend. Yesterday, 5 days later he has a very sore throat and was taking himself to bed with a bit of a fever. He didn’t look well.

another neighbour, an old lady that we sometimes walk her dog for her, stopped near our garden the other day when I was weeding to let me know that she hadn’t been well and “have some of the symptoms but not all” and had been for a swab test.

it’s still out and about in this neighbourhood at least. I’m in favour of relaxing restrictions but not in favour of so many throwing caution to the wind and making up excuses not to wear masks, or take precautions

I agree we can’t sit inside - see my next post.
We should however use common sense

149 deaths announced, an increase on the same day last week.

1118 new cases, again the first time in a few days where its been that high..

Meanwhile in Bournemouth, there is an emergency because shit loads of people of have gone to the beach, and not distancing, and acting like cnuts

BBC:

The seaside resort of Bournemouth in southern England has declared a major incident after thousands of people flocked to its beaches for the second day in a row.

The local council said visitors had "defied advice to stay away" from the town on one of the hottest days of the year - and it was now co-ordinating a "multi-agency emergency response" across the area.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council said its staff were abused as they attempted to empty over-flowing bins on the seafront. It said eight tonnes of waste was collected yesterday, with a further 33 tonnes of rubbish removed along the full stretch of coastline this morning.

Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood tweeted that he had asked the government's police minister to provide more officers if the Dorset force requested them.

Assistant Chief Constable Sam de Reya of Dorset Police said: "We are... reliant on people taking personal responsibility and strongly advise members of the public to think twice before heading to the area.

"Clearly we are still in a public health crisis, and such a significant volume of people heading to one area places a further strain on emergency services' resources."

On the other hand, in the same article the WHO also said that they expect things to continue to improve, or stabilise, despite the gradual move to open restrictions.
Despite warning about resurgences, he said the WHO anticipated that the situation would calm down further in the majority of countries over the summer.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-53175459

This is the WHO's data for Europe. Between the 11th June and 17th June there were 18,900 cases per day, between the 18th June and 25th June (today) there were 18,700 cases per day.

They didn't specify the 11 countries where "accelerated transmission has led to very significant resurgence that if left unchecked", but using their data they seem mostly to relate to Eastern Europe. Armenia, Sweden, Moldova, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine have seen an average of 25+ cases per 100k over the last 14 days (the UK are at 25 now), which represents a 20%+ increase on what happened 2 weeks ago.

The trend for essentially all of those countries is they didn't have a first wave.

When Western Europe was having its peak, they weren't. They didn't have the same level of community transmission but they did implement some lockdown measures, so they kept a lid on things in a way Western Europe were unable to do. Sweden have obviously been doing their own thing.

Cases for 11 Countries Combined

There's no increase in cases for the other 43 countries combined, just a general levelling off since around Mid-may.

It's mostly the same in the US. The places that are struggling now are primarily the ones who weren't hit so hard in the beginning. A delayed first wave rather than a second wave. California locked down hard and fast, and relaxed restrictions in a much more measured way than the majority of states, but they're struggling regardless. Those who did well in the beginning - whether it was through good fortune, like Texas or Armenia, or whether it was through concerted action, like California or Bulgaria - are essentially being punished for it now.

feckin idiots. Council should install a couple of machine gun nests on the beach, they will soon shift.

I don’t see how packed beaches are a pleasure at the best of times never mind in a pandemic with a highly contagious virus

Seen the images of Bournemouth beach. Looks horrendous.

Quite many of those countries are not in Europe :) understandable mistake in a football forum, because of UEFA, though.

Edit: Well, seems WHO puts them to the European region for some reason.

Whoever said their understanding of freedom as a concept is like that of a child was bang on.

The pubs and restaurants opening up in July is a bit of a concern. People from all around the neighbourhood will be close together while drinking eating, shouting laughing expelling the virus indoors. The pubs round here and around the country have no ventilation, low ceilings, all kinds of secluded spaces.

There's some info from Chinese data how the virus spread to two other tables in a restaurant. Being 1metre apart won't help and didn't help these and didn't help the many infected when going to church. You can dip your hand in santizer while 3 metres apart, you'll get the virus circualting around when lot of people are gabbing away eating, singing talking loudly etc.

The American culture is one of coming in and grabbing as much wealth for yourself as possible. feck everyone else. They're not at all suited to battling something that needs a collectivist approach to deal with.
They literally believe it's more important to have the freedom to not wear a mask (and will proudly not wear one to stick it to the libs) than someone else's life. Same with guns.

Obviously that's a sweeping generalisation and won't be true for a lot of Americans, but it seems like there are enough of them who thinks like that to make it an issue.
I genuinely like some aspects of America but I always find it really strange and contradictory that you can have that culture of super individualism and yet have a dominant religion that kinda of teaches the exact opposite of that. It never seems to cause anyone any problems or doubts within the culture.

Absolute state of Bournemouth beach.

Can't wait for all the litter to be left behind as well. Such lovely and smart people in this world.

33 tonnes of rubbish was left there yesterday.

So depressing. Kind of mad how overwhelmed local amenities are getting. Makes you realise how important it is for our own countries to feck a large chunk of our population off abroad for most of the summer. I’ve never seen anything like the traffic we got in Dublin last weekend. We basically can’t accomodate all our own citizens.

Yeah it's frustrating to watch, something as simple as taking your own rubbish home (no doubt bins overflowing) is difficult for most people. It'll be interesting to see in 2 weeks whether this flares up in hospital admissions or an increase in cases. From pictures i've seen, it's been difficult to observe distancing measures.

From the BBC

A family in Carrollton, Texas, has had 18 people test positive for Covid-19 after a single relative unknowingly infected others at a surprise birthday party.

The one infected individual - a young man who thought his cough was related to his construction job - was in contact with seven family members at the party, KENS5 News reports.

Those seven then spread the disease to 10 others in the family, including two young children. Three members are now in hospital because of the virus: two grandparents as well as a woman with breast cancer.

Ron Barbosa, whose nephew was the first infected person, said he and his wife did not attend the party due to virus fears.

"We knew this was going to happen," he told KENS5. "This whole time this has been going on we've been terrified."

The party that led to this family outbreak was technically allowed under Texas' reopening guidelines. The governor on Thursday paused reopening plans after the state saw two consecutive days of more than 5,000 new Covid-19 cases

Many will have to find out it's real the hard way.

Question: Do we yet know...

If you have had COVID, can you have it again?
If you have COVID antibodies, can you still spread it (i.e. do the antibodies just suppress it or get rid of it completely)?

Or do we just not know yet?

2 local beauty spots here today have been unbelievably overwhelmed with parking and visitors, mostly young people. One solitary police officer trying to disband the crowds, poor bloke was being harangued and ignored. Insane.

And the amount of litter being left around our home village and the police have absolutely no control over it at all.

I went for a motorbike ride yesterday and went past Chatsworth House and that was chaos. 1000’s of people there, parking anarchy and I had to crawl through crowds on the roads and sheep!

Just seen the scenes on Bournemouth Beach too. What the hell?

The people that don't care enough about others to take personal responsibility to do the right thing and stay close to home in the middle of a pandemic are obviously going to be the same people who don't care enough about others to take personal responsibility and clean up their litter. All people of the same mindset coming together on our beaches to inflict misery on others for the sake of a day out.

I went past three open spaces today, two of them car parks, and it actually looked as if rubbish had been deliberately spread out; all the items were individually separated (as if for a photo session or something). Weird as heck - never seen anything like this or indeed such an amount of waste in those places which are normally pretty spotless.

But we can't sit inside for the rest of our lives. Best not read the news, solves a lot of these worries.

What worries does not reading the news solve?

The only problem of mine that not reading the news will solve is the problem of me seeing how many fecking idiots I’m surrounded by.
