After the SARS outbreak, they banned these 'wet markets' (meat markets full of live wild animals in awful conditions) because - shock horror - SARS started in a market just like the one in Wuhan.
Unfortunately, the wild animal meat lobby is very powerful, and soon after SARS died down, they petitioned the government with enough pressure to get the meat markets reopened again.
Whilst there is a temporary closure of these monstrosities, it's expected after COVID-19 has died down, that the wild meat markets will reopen again. Twats.
There is no way unfortunately that the UK finishes this without thousands and thousands of people dead . Worst thing is that people here don't care about advisories and are still going to pubs etc believing that somehow it won't be them

We even had Chinese doctor who tried to warn ghe world in november, but their government(or the virus) killed him bwfore anyone believed him.
there's a very, very low chance that he will ever require hospital treatment. and even if he did, he can just get an uber or something. it's certainly not risky enough to literally pack everything up, upheave your whole life and move to another country over.
The skies are full of bats in central Sydney and millions of people live there. You can't get much more contact than that.

I couldn't agree more that the culture of wet markets needs to change. I mean, it's undeniable really isn't it. Hopefully this will finally be the wake up call for good. We just need to remain careful at the same time not to make the criticisms too generalised and walk that all too familiar line. It's not like all Chinese people are out there eating bats.Far, far from it. It's a country of 1.6 billion people after all with many more of Chinese ethnicity around the world.

It's largely an education issue, the speed of growth and development that China has gone through is pretty much unprecedented.
On a separate note it's quite a microcosm of the whole political landscape that the Chinese government fecked up through suppression and deception, but was effective afterwards, while the western governments fecked up through complacency and incompetence. Singapore handles the crisis well? No surprise there. You could apply that above paragraph to almost anything.

Nope, though I can probably go to the hospital before I need a ventilator. And the only contact I have with the outside world are with Uber drivers who bring me food (unfortunately I have no kitchen), so in general I think that I have a good chance of not getting infected in the first place.

Surely Uber drivers will be high chance of being infected as they will have come into contact with loads of people.
If this was someone who has been killed, the police would investigate who was the cause and they would be tried in a court of law.
And if proven guilty they would be charged.
And if it was a corporate entity, they would be suied for damages caused.
So. If China was proven to be responsible, why should they not be taken to the International Court of Law and be suied by all those affected.

Well unlike Iran and NKorea being the only rogue nations chasing after nuclear weapons, China aren't the only ones with these wet markets, making it much harder to "exert pressure" on them and not the rest of the world. The bat soup video, for example, was filmed in some minor country that no one even remembers in SE asia.

It's a vanilla situation compared to what most of us face everyday. It's pretty ideal if you want to avoid the virus in relative terms.

My sister just got made redundant from her digital marketing company. They mainly deal with retail outlets and airlines so contracts being pulled left right and centre. Interested to see what Rishi has to say in the announcement.
