I'm hardly an expert on this but here's how I see it. Even with a perfect (i.e. zero new infections) lockdown/quarantine you're basically just delaying the inevitable and the virus will spread again once these restrictions are lifted leaving you with the same problem as before. Unless you're holding out for a vaccine but I think we all agree that locking everyone down for 12 to 18 months is not an option. Doing nothing is clearly the worst option (see Italy) so there has to be another way. I guess in an ideal world, you would completely isolate the high-risk groups while letting life continue normally for everyone else. But obviously, this is almost impossible to do as it assumes everyone behaves perfectly. Just thought it was interesting that is all coming from virologists (so not politicians or economists). There have been quite a few of them writing op-eds and giving interviews in German media.
Why (to me at least) having these drastic measures in place now still makes sense is that it buys us time. Time to develop a long-term strategy, make sure all supply-chains are working, hospitals have everything they need etc.

So I'm in two minds what to do. My gf is at work, because it's a bodyshop that deals with NHS staff it's allowed to stay open. It's only a short way away but is a bus ride.
Do I: a) drive and pick her up later b) stay at home and let her get the bus.
Surely a is the best option for her and others on public transport, however I don't want to be like everyone else and break the 'lockdown' (there's still plenty of traffic/people walking up and down my road). I'm not worried about the police, as there's none about anyway plus she works right next to a Tescos, but I want to do the right thing when I can.

While it will impact me massively I don't have any dependants and could just curb unnecessary spending while I ride it out. But if I had kids I imagine I may think differently about enforced isolation. I don't agree with those who are ignoring guidelines but also do empathise with their situations.
The government have been far too vague and expected employers and employees to take the hit to protect the economy, but the reality is not everyone is in a position to do that for the greater good. Something like an imposed government sick pay scheme would help limit those who will inevitably go to work while ill.
If heart inflammation is a risk, why are there anti-anti-inflammatory stories on the net? Why are anti-inflammatories so bad and is it a fact that one shouldn't use these?

I really wouldn't risk it on a bus whether its busy or not. Think of the germs.
Common sense was telling us to start social distancing weeks ago... but affluent and like minded folk were stilling ramming out the pubs for their usual sunday roast up until the govt had to shut them down.

If you're staying in your car and you're sharing a household with this girlfriend then i dont see how you're breaking any lockdown. There's no risk of contact.
People should be driving where possible right now.
The fact that they already target a lift of measures after 2 months, could be ‘light at the end of the tunnel’, something to be optimistic about. However it could also be a recipe for disaster. Time will tell.

Go and get her. You've got to think of the intent behind these measures, and in that case going to get her is the best thing to do.
Cabbie won't wipe down after, any public transportation method needs deep cleaning. It's not a safer way than public transportation, the problem with the overcrowding on the tube is around the number of carriages they're putting on, and non-essential workers using it. Address that and we solve the problem, without any requirement to risk taxi's and workers.

Just announced in the House of Commons, the Chancellor is working on a self employed solution, the difficulty of distinguishing tax returns (sometimes a year and a half old) between those out of work now and those who are finding more work is proving the difficulty on an accurate number.

Agree with this. The danger of the virus lies not in it's potency, but it's spreadibility. A long surface life coupled with asymptomatic transmission is just a rather fecked up combination to deal with.
