SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

The way you’ve phrased this doesn’t tell the whole story.

Its a staggered opening, it’s not saying everyone must return or is even expecting to return to school by the 1st of June. It’s year 1 and 6. Some parents NEED schools to be open so they can send their kids back in.

Also, SOME unions, teachers and councils oppose it not ALL. And ultimately there is always going to be opposition to it. A person from Wirral council literally said it’s still a “life and death “ situation in regards to sending kids back. If there are people in these positions still having these sort of feelings then I don’t see how you can ever convince them it’ll be safe until there’s a vaccine.
Yes it's a staggered opening, but as i said in another post, schools are saying it's voluntary anyway, if you don't want your child returning, then you're under no obligation to do so. There will be no judging and no fines. I think many schools are under the impression that parents aren't going to send their children back until September unless absolutely necessary. If they have the means to keep them at home, then they will do.

Even the school my children go to are expecting low child returns. They've made that clear in the letters to home, they don't expect many parents to send their children back, so they're planning any reopening, once cleared by unions etc, with the view that there will be many parents deciding to keep their children off for the forseeable future. As for me, i'm in a position where i can keep my child at home if needed. I'm a key worker, but my partner doesn't work, so i can keep them home if i so desire.

Well there you go! I stand corrected. So you obviously have clarity on the situation, which begs the question, what was the point of the initial post I quoted. It seemed to just be stirring things up and having a whinge at Boris over nothing.

Missed that - why did he do that?
The answer he got was not really an answer (as per) and he was obviously massively pissed off - they accidentally cut back to him, prob because of the BBC reporter’s sound issues. I can only stream Sky so can’t give a time stamp but it was perfect in a way and gives me a bit of belief that the media aren’t just robots.

I haven’t watched this but think it’s right: https://www.trendsmap.com/twitter/tweet/1264593822849343492

Cannot believe this press conference. Most down I’ve ever felt about our political leadership along with the final weeks of the Brexit campaign and aftermath. He literally just gave him all the clear, told parents they were idiots for not doing the same for their kids, and then threw kids and schools under the bus to distract from it all.

I laughed at the start when a viewer question came up and Johnson just stayed mute before obviously being gestured at he had to read it out, obviously not being watching any of the 20 other press conferences in the last two weeks.

He'll just blag his way through this like all the other scandals. He needs Cummings otherwise the operation really will fall apart I think.

Where do you draw the line? South European whites appears to be worse affected. Scots versus English? Blondes versus brunettes?

They're arbitrary classifications. The treatment of sick people will be the same regardless of race.

Asians are more closely related to Europeans than they are to Africans. Why lump BAME together?

They are "lumped together" because that is the limited data we have right now. Which has been my point all along, you cannot make assumptions until more research has been done. Current data shows that BAME people are more at risk than other sections of the community. That is the limit of the data set.

You cannot make assumptions on this purely being socio-economic until further research has been conducted.

No, it isn't.

There's no question on any form that has only two categories for race: white or BAME.

Human variation is tiny across races. There are no genes unique to Africans that doesn't also exist in East Asian populations. And nothing that's unique to Slavs that is absent in the Americas.

Given we now can see how brazenly inept and arrogant this governments handling of the situation has been, I have a question.

Is the decision to ask reception and year 1 pupils to go back on the 1st June just a stupid idea from an incompetent team going against expert advice.

Or could it be a cynical experiment where they compare a social distancing compliant group (year 6) with a group that has no chance of keeping to the rules (reception) and monitor the impact?

Given they were willing to potentially sacrifice people on a 250 mile car journey that wasn't necessary, transported vulnerable covid patients into care homes and failed to provide adequate PPE for staff, my "instinct" would be to tell the government to go feck itself.

I can relate, my mother passed away start of lockdown. Had to wait 4 weeks to confirm if was virus or not, and 6 weeks for the cremation. Me and my dad alone, as family couldnt travel

So sorry to hear this mate.

They can say whatever they want. My five year old is not going back until they can categorically show me it’s safe.

Very sorry to hear this and sincere condolences for your loss. Can’t imagine how tough it has been to endure grief in these circumstances.

If you don’t mind sharing, how does Cummings actions make you feel?

thanks, yes its always tough, but this lockdown and the circumstances around it are unreal, also my dad has COPD so cant really leave the house either. its more how brazen he seems to be and the whole party with their pathetic defending of it, extremely cheated really. If he has done 2 trips and a day out he has no leg to stand on

it wasnt something i was conciously dwelling on, but the email above and the anger in it really hit home

thanks, theres clearly thousands in a similar boat

Very true, but It doesn’t make it any easier for you though mate.

I lost my Dad a few years back and that was bad enough without all this shit that is going on. I can’t imagine how tough it’s been for you. All the best pal.

Credit to Boris.

He has got Murdoch and the Daily Mail turning against him. That’s a huge feat for a Tory PM.

I have a feeling the devil is in the details...

There is a chance, albeit a small chance, that the secret in understanding this virus lies in big data. If some independent company interviewed every person who tested positive and asked them enough questions, we would've had a vast amount of data - most of it seemingly pointless data.

But, if we fed it into a computer to find patterns in the answers we might've discovered something useful in this fight.

It is assumed that genes play a deciding factor in the severity of the disease, but I still have a feeling there's something else. Or maybe a combination of things.

Who knows? It could be as simple as: "How many cups of coffee did you drink on the day you first started showing symptoms?"

You might just come across a correlation that was meaningful but far more likely that you will spend a great deal of time and effort finding meaningless things to investigate. A non-covid related example is the finding that obese people drink far more sugar free drinks. This is used by idiots to try to prove that sugar-free drinks cause obesity but of course fat people drink sugar free drinks more often than thin people in an attempt to lose weight. There is no significant causative relationship.

So sorry to hear that mate. This sort of story is why Cummings' behavior makes me so annoyed. If you can comply with the law, even under the most severe circumstances, he can stick to them under far less stressful conditions. Doubly so when he was an intrinsic part of making and applying the law. The barefaced arrogance and hypocrisy is stunning.

You can observe his bumbling incompetence from space with the naked eye.

I can't believe that the UK is only now moving towards quarantine for international arrivals.

I once saw a study that said that people who ride a horse every day live longer. And i thought so for a long time, untill i realised that people who could afford to have their own horse was rich. And thats more likley why they lived longer.

Article in the Irish Times this morning saying that aspects our phases will be pushed forward should our cases stay as low as they are now. Good to see the government finally showing a bit of sense.

Good thread on Sweden and whether their different approach has been vindicated.

tl;dr It hasn’t.

Good read.

Plus I think it really needs to be taken into account that Swedes seem to have generally been a lot better with social distancing than a lot of other countries would have been if they weren't forced to!

Was always going to happen. We have to be flexible in both directions. Plus we can tweak our plan based on how other countries - who locked down/re-opened earlier than us - are getting on.

Bars and restaurants open in the Czech Republic today

I'd nearly fly over to Prague and get a shitty European Guinness at this stage.

Don't. Annoys me every time to see hordes of Brits and Irishmen pouring out of the "pubs" in the centre of Prague. The Czech Republic is paradise for beer lovers and there are loads of nice places where a pint of local beer is roughly €1.50 or less if you can be bothered to step outside Old Town Square. Why would anyone go to Prague and then go to an Irish pub and pay €5 for a Guinness?

Yet the old have still died unnecessarily in their thousands.
