SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Exactly. Everyone so upset about their ‘ruined Christmas’ simply because they can’t have big family gatherings should spare a thought for those who couldn’t anyway through losing loved ones.
For me, it is more the inept leadership, lax messaging (which leads to more deaths) and complete U turns impacting peoples plans which is annoying. It was entirely predictable.

Other than the original 80% furlough scheme, I can't think of a single covid response from the UK government which hasn't been incorrect, too late or later u- turned on.

So on Wednesday he says people can have a Christmas and now we can't. But he also says things will be fine by Easter. You're a liar Boris, feck off, how can anyone remotely trust a thing this idiot and Government tells us? The rules change every other fecking day.

I'm not even too annoyed because i'm lucky to be in a Tier 1 county, but holy feck is this Government making such a fecking ballsup of this. Treating the general public like fecking children. Just tell us straight you planks.

That's our Christmas plans in tatters but I guess it can't be helped. i do wonder how many people will abide by this though. I'm definitely more in the camp of keeping safe but I really do understand people's frustration and anger.

The whole situation is very dynamic, it's not that hard to understand.

Wales has also decided to introduce a new lockdown today and Christmas restrictions. Scotland will also amend rules.

I think it’s safe to say the situation has shifted over the past few days.
We have record cases and one of the highest rates in Europe I believe. The Welsh Government post circuit break have been every bit as incompetent as the UK government when the message was we’ve taken action early to save Christmas when the data suggested it was never going to be enough. This new strain and the UK announcement has given them the cover to do what should have been done 2 weeks ago - they’ll be using it just as much as Boris.

Sturgeon needs to feck right off.
Yeah, better she waits until Scotland becomes a shit show again with the new strain running around. Did you not see all the idiots from Glasgow flocking to Edinburgh during Glasgows tier 4? And low and behold Edinburghs numbers went up shortly afterwards. Once again, you wanna blame people for lock downs, you can point that finger squarely at the people not doing the basics to help avoid the spread of this thing. Wearing a mask, staying apart, staying home when feeling sick etc etc. Its a pain in the arse, but its a much much less pain in the arse than constant lock downs. We only have those of us who dont want to do the basics to blame anytime someone says lock down. Dumfries and Galloway had like 1 new infection and they will be going in to lock down as well because people in other areas cant be trusted to just stay in their own area during a lock down. Selfish people are dragging this out, and its high time they started being pointed at and shamed for it.

Dynamic.

The message/instruction was obviously wrong from the very start. You cannot ease lockdown from December 2nd and have a 5 day Christmas with mixing households! Just look at other countries plans for comparison.

Sounds like you are wasted on here perhaps you should be making those decisions instead, you obviously know a lot better.

Oh no, the new strain, oooooohhhhhhhh. Bollocks

No argument from me that there’s incompetence all round. I don’t think this new strain is a sideshow though. Sturgeon just said it’s the most serious moment of the whole pandemic.

Where have we heard that kind of reaction before? And look where we are now? But you keep on keeping on, chief. Not like people are dying over this or anything. As long as you get your after eight and prawn cocktail around grannys dinner table...for what might be the last time.

Yeah I saw that. Whitty rejected that when he was asked that question though and said with the vaccine and treatments we’re in a far better position with better days ahead. I’m not saying there isn’t a new strain and it may well be highly contagious but there’s no doubt regardless of whether there was one or not announcing the 5 day jolly that early was ridiculous and I think all leaders were looking for a way out of it but politically didn’t think they could.

God, let’s hope so.

Yes, let's. Let's not just look at the countries that suit your argument. We know about Germany, Italy, and a few others, who really are on a long and difficult arc that they could detect at an earlier stage, so let's balance it out with different countries.
  • Switzerland are allowing people to meet multiple households to meet indoors on the 24th, 25th, 26th, and 31st December, and the cantons can decide themselves whether Ski resorts are open.
  • Spain are allowing gatherings of 10 people on 4 days too, swapping out boxing day for New Year's day, and curfews are being pushed back on Christmas Day and New Year's day to the early hours.
  • France have disregarded the curfew for Christmas eve, and are allowing household mixing in general - 6 adults and any number of children.
  • Portugal have removed the 10 person gathering limit and will allow any numbers on Christmas eve and day, and push the curfew back to 2am.
Multiple other countries are allowing household mixing either specifically over the festive period, or in general in this month. They have taken different approaches given different cultures, epidemiology, etc. but the general principle is not at all abnormal. People want to allow human connection if this time, if they can, for obvious reasons, and many people across many countries have disagreed with the rules on both sides.

Sure pal

You see this said a lot, despite how utterly ridiculous it is. People are allowed to criticise our Governments mishandling of the pandemic without offering themselves as an alternative to the prime minister.

Something has changed in the last few days and spooked the government though. No way does Boris get up in the House of Commons last week to accuse Starmer of ‘wanting to cancel Christmas’ unless he was pretty damn sure he wouldn’t be forced to cancel Christmas.

I expect every other government in Europe apart from this one very publicly cancelling Christmas didnt help. Neither did realising the Oxford vaccine trial went wrong and the country will likely have to pause its vaccinations for 1 or 2 months in the New Year because there arent enough doses.

I dont think he will call another meeting before next week on the 30th like he said.

But he is definitely announcing lockdown on the 30th.

I guess you missed Antonio Costa "preserving the Christmas spirit" by making relaxations on Christmas, while simultaneously announcing the need for more severe restrictions by New Year's, as did multiple other countries on the continent and elsewhere.

The Oxford vaccine trial went wrong? I thought it was about to be approved for use?

It might be for the last time for many older people, yes

Personally I don't think it's that. I think people are quite rightly annoyed at how the government has dealt with this from start to finish.

They got the dosing wrong by accident, and the more effective dose had no data for over 55s. The FDA wont issue approval until February at the very earliest and the EU has gone quiet on it. I'm sure the UK will approve it asap, because they have to.

My point is that of course the government have handled this dreadfully. They should have had the balls to say from the off that Christmas should have been held under restrictions.

My family have all prepared for Christmas in this way, lots of people actually took the government’s 5 day relaxation and ran with it. Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. Now the uproar.

Don't see the point in having harsh restrictions on Christmas. Might as well have kept it as is and then brought in a lockdown after boxing day like the rest of the UK.

Enough people will flout the lockdown rules over Christmas and New Years to ensure January will be the worst month yet statistically, without a full on lockdown.

I'm expecting the worst month and a full lockdown

Your last 2 words are the most important. Full lockdown.
People use the word lockdown as if it means anything. The last one was nothing of the sort.
Nothing changed and as a result, it achieved zero. Quite unlike the first one which certainly had a beneficial effect. But it was lifted far too quickly.

Speculation is that we’ll be having mass vaccinations in early January either way.
