SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

My Mum who I live with now during this is having her first vaccine tomorrow she's 82 and in decent health.

I've hardly left the house since March I couldn't bear passing it on by taking any risk.

I am so relieved am nearly in tears. I know we have more time to go yet but at least this is something.
That's good news for you both. You've done your very best for her. :)

Oh well, here we go. First real worry of infection. I manage one of two teams who have to go into our workplace and 4 of us, and my partner now have some symptoms come on in the last 24 hours. Stuffy nose, slight temperature and breathless feeling in our chests.

We do do Covid testing at work so I’m lucky enough to be able to get tested very easily, just going to get swabbed in the car park now. We suspect just a cold has gone into the two teams but we have to make sure.

The addition of loss of smell and taste symptoms as core covid symptoms was done in large part as a result of GP's listening to patients way before NHS recognised them as reasons for getting tested - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/29/gps-acknowledging-taste-smell-loss-symptom-coronavirus/

Long covid clinics are also GP-staffed: https://www.pulsetoday.co.uk/news/c...0-gp-staffed-long-covid-clinics-within-weeks/
That's in addition to the round the clock vaccination service GPs are doing including at weekends + manning face-to-face covid "hot hub" clinics

We don't report back up to GMC because that isn't what the GMC is for. I'd literally spent ages studying long covid literature. What you said would piss me off if I wasn't sure that you don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about.

Pay no mind. He's lashing out. He's a Liverpool fan and United are top of the league whilst he's just looked at the table and has realised that Liverpool are battling it out with West Ham and Everton for 4th place this season.

Home pulse oximeters now being recommended by an NHS study - only 9 months behind this thread :wenger:

I bought one because of this thread!

Good luck. At least you have access to early testing so will know one way or the other quickly.

Happy for you and proud of you. Well done. Still, you gotta be vigilant. The battle isn't over yet. All the best.

Could someone provide a link to a good / accurate pulse oximeter?

There are loads on Amazon etc but so many reviews say they’re grossly inaccurate! Can’t help fee market has been flooded with cheap shite due to demand.

Good luck. Hope it turns out negative.

That's not my personal experience at all. I got a temperature back in May and what is now know as covid toes and no other symptoms. I had one night where breathing was difficult, but not too bad. I had no other symptoms and although I didn't know it was covid at the time I knew it could be so self isolated and it was over pretty quickly.

About 3 weeks after that I got some worrying symptoms involving my lungs / throat which caused me to go to the GP. This was at a time where there was a mass of cases and we were being instructed not to go unless urgent so I didn't know what to expect. I was referred for multiple scans and I still go back once a month for check ups.

Considering they had no idea about what was going on at the time, I didn't exactly have regular symptoms added to the fact they were ultra-busy (and still are) the way I have been treated is fantastic. They are now sure that it is long covid and thankfully I'm almost fully recovered. Hopefully my next visit will be the last one and that's partly down to the GP's who kept on top of it and referred me constantly when they could quite easily have just disregarded me as non-urgent.

That's good to hear about your GP and glad you're over it. Couldn't help notice you mentioned lung issues. Doctors were only jumping on that everywhere at the time, like you say there was not much info around then.

Patients without lung involvement were not so lucky. Still aren't.

I apologise as I did make a generalisation and it was stupid. I should have added in my experience with my own GPs (plural) and the many heated arguments I had with my GP footy friends.

You are not a GP are you? You don't come across here as one as you share so much useful knowledge which I have read over the last year or so.

He’s a doctor

Long overdue

I can see it now. A load of people who I've heard pass off the virus as "Just a cold/flu, only killing the elderley, I'm not worried" etc. Becoming less vigilant on purpose, as they wouldn't mind getting the virus and getting a free £500 in their pockets.

Good luck

Im sure it’s fine but there’s now a concern at work that even though we have been uber careful and implemented very strict protocols from the very beginning and have enforced 80 or so staff to work from home to protect those of us that can’t, somehow a (hopefully) cold has spread between two segregated teams.

Back to the drawing board.

This proposed £500 payment for isolating, to me, is a real sign of how much this has been fecked up, and the selfishness of so many.

Fair enough if its means tested for those in genuine need, but for the rest? feck off

Some cases it might be selfish employers rather than selfish employees.

It will mean more people get tested which will mean confirmed cases will rise again.

Best late Christmas present the MSM and scaremongers could wish for!

@Dumbstar Tbh I'll back you up a bit as I live in a house of 4 and the only who is flippant about things is indeed a trainee doctor. Actions included forming a support bubble without telling anyone, which was just a bit annoying really. She tends to ignore our messages when we ask things, which included us trying to figure out how we could deal with Boris' Christmas 180. Even though we were in Tier 4, she then left to go spend a week with her family without mentioning it.

I'm fairly meh about it myself but it's pissed off the other housemates including a biomedical scientist who works on Covid stuff. He spent a week self-isolating in his room to visit his family and then couldn't even go because of Boris' turnaround.

Admittedly the doctors on this forum are great. I get a completely different vibe from them.

Very well said. We all need some kind of a lift.

I’ve said it before on here, I have also kept quiet about it in recent weeks, but, if there’s no concerted buy in from the populace to help stem the virus, what’s left for the government to ultimately do except true draconian lockdowns & not the ‘15 person’ horseshit?

Fines are all well & good, but fines may not seem to be eliciting the intended result if one offs like these persist while there’s media saturation regarding the new, more potentially virulent strains out there?

I can commiserate re: governmental ineptitude (just look at what’s been uncovered in the past 24 hours in my country) & blame definitely needs to be foisted on governments. But these governments will have little recourse soon except to truly lock shit down & punish the people who have been coddled for too long either through too soft measures or government incompetence.

Are you still shitting on about ‘scaremongers’? Really? With ITUs up and down the country absolutely screwed, thousands dying every day doctors and nurses at the end of their tethers? At what point will you ever accept the real villains here have been the people down-playing the severity of this? People like the Prof Karol Sikora muppet you were so fond of re-tweeting.

Ffs man, honestly what does it even matter what the total number of cases are?

Most hospitals across the country right now have essentially stopped all elective services and even some semi-urgent services too. Despite that, we're working with a higher inpatient load than in the first wave and our excess deaths, at least in the UK, are the highest they've been since WW2. We have about 3-4 wards left in the hospital which aren't totally full of Covid.

Yeah there's been some scare mongering at times. I found the reporting on Australia at the beginning ridiculous. DEADLIEST day as they record about 7 deaths.

But I'm looking at the situation and wondering how people can still be thinking in this way, now, in the UK.

Things can be serious and people can be shameless scaremongers, the two ain't mutually exclusive pal!

As I've just said, things can be serious and people can be shameless scaremongers (like that women who claimed children were being admitted in their droves which was thankfully sharply put right by an expert).

That's awfully convenient for those who just want to call everything scaremongering isn't it.

No idea. Maybe the headmistress/master agreed to it? They may have been a guest? Might be a family members wedding?

The BBC website says that the school hall was leased out.
But surely the school knew that during this so called lockdown, events were banned.
Don't understand why so few guests have been prosecuted.
It is up to the police to set an example.
Oh wait. Most of them were probably in the local cafe for their lunch...

Every adult attending should have been fined as has been suggested. I believe the wedding planner has the biggest fine, you the couple getting married would be as well. If the parents paid for it, they should be getting a whacking big fine. They know it is illegal. To fine so few it ridiculous, if you were a guest you knew you were breaking the law. The fact they covered the windows confirms they knew.

Negative, just a cold as suspected. Nervy few hours though for all involved.

In that case, defend this, I dare you!

Ah yes, classic media scaremongering. By correcting the record and reporting that someone they had interviewed was massively exaggerating an issue I can really see how they are at fault. :wenger:

If that guy from the RCPCH didn't come out and correct that statement parents up and down the land would be currently panicking over false information.

If that's not scaremongering I don't know what is, I'm sure you won't be the last to come up with such mental gymnastics to defend that though.
