SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

A friend of mine 47 years of age has been hospitalized after getting AZ vaccine. Horrific thrombosis, his whole left leg is blue in colour now. Has anybody heard of ZF 2001 vaccine?

Are you saying your friend has had the ZF2001 vaccine as that's a Chinese made vaccine? Hope he gets better soon, that must be a nightmare :(

My AZ vaccine had a batch number of 4120Z003 and there is a Z001 batch.

ZF2001 - Wikipedia

Edit - I think I misread that and you're asking about the ZF2001 independently from what has happened to your friend.

Amid all this talk of vaccines etc are getting any news on if its actually working?

I see Japan & BRazil have mounting cases as well as europe?
This seems to be getting worse not better

Incredible data from Israel (so far).

Good data out of the UK (again so far but only just starting to open up again).

Bad news out of Chile.

I don't think Brazil or Japan are really that far into their vaccination programes are they? Brazil especially is a total shit show in every possible way.

Google “Israel” and “covid”.
Isn't that all Pfizer?

Do we have similar data on AZ ?
It obviously works.. it'll be great if it can have a similar impact as the Pfizer one is having.

Isn't the Brazilian variant making things worse there.. and presumably in Chile?
I think they all work largely fine with the B117 (UK variant).. the Brazilian and SA ones were less straightforward.

Israel has the SA variant and vaccines (yes, all Pfizer) seems to be working ok against it.Less effective than against “original covid” but still effective.

Sorry to divert the conversation, but furthermore is this not a ringing endorsement for the effectiveness of the AZ vaccine that has been administered so far? That is by far the majority vaccine we have rolled out in this country (UK). School kids who have clearly not yet received any vaccination should be continuing to be super spreaders but aren't.
:) Nice try, 'continuing to be super spreaders' as if it's a proven fact that they were. They will obviously have contributed to infection rates, as has all contact whether through family, work, travel, or meeting socially, but there is just no data at all to call children super spreaders, however much people might want there to be.

Yes, I'm sure the rates would be higher without vaccination, it's great, let's hope it keeps going.

I worked in the hospital with the densest area in the UK in terms of cases/population.
Since the vaccine introduction, not a single person who's had the vaccine has come in with COVID (so far).

Amidst the awareness of the risks of the vaccines, it's hugely important to bring the benefits to the table.

That's a mental read.

Haven't read into greatly but Brazil are currently out of oxygen and hospitals are full you would expect a similar outcome no matter what the variant of Covid.

Looks like its just stats being shown in one specific light without telling the full picture to me.

Shit, I knew they were still cutting the amazon down but I didn't realise it was that bad.

That’s grim but those stats on outcomes could be driven by hospitals/ICUs getting overwhelmed rather than a property of the virus. Patients getting admitted to ICUs later and sicker than they did when there was less pressure for resources.
A bit late to this, but yes this has a dramatic impact. Here in SA, extrapolating the number of cases from the mortality rate seen in some provinces during the second wave would imply an infection rate of well over 100% in these provinces. So this clearly implies a higher mortality rate for these provinces (generally the poorer and less resourced ones). Given the SA variant was the majority of cases in SA, it's unlikely the provinces had a higher mortality rate due to the variant but rather due to lack of resources.

Such a bleak situation in Brazil
It's shocking. The actions/inactions of one man have single-handedly caused the deaths of so many people, and there's no end in sight.

Imagine someone being willing to sacrifice all those lives for his own political ambitions - it's so wicked.

I would not be surprised if Bolsonaro faces legal consequences after his term ends. Other world leaders have also been callous or inactive in the face of the pandemic, but few have undermined their own authorities efforts like he has, fighting lockdowns ever step of the way.

Absolutely mind blowing. Is he an anti-vaxxer or just plain stupid? Surely it can’t be politics because the people will vote him out on this one issue

Possibly may have happened in the US if trump had stuck to his guns.

He is basically Trump on steroids. Far right, really stupid and believes in economy before all else, whether it be the deaths of his people, the amazon getting destroyed, whatever. He's a complete loon. It's sad that corruption had gotten so bad in Brazil that they felt their best choice was to elect this horrible excuse for a human being.

I work with a few Brazilian's and they can't believe what he's doing, but then, they were also telling me when he was voted in that it was a good thing and he'd fix all the problems they had. Could not believe what they were saying given what I'd read about him.

I used to date a Brazilian girl, they really are the best people.

This is all very interesting but can anybody tell me whether I'm going to get my holiday to Corfu in the middle of June?

Worrying thing is there is still a year until the election. So Brazil are stuck with him until then
He's had 4 different health ministers

The way I'm hearing people talking about it, it feels like a significant number expect the pandemic is going to be over tomorrow.

And if these scientists can be believed, it actually will be.

Real-time modelling carried out by University College London indicates the UK should pass the critical threshold where the proportion of people who have protection against the virus either through vaccination, previous infection or natural immunity will hit 73.4% on Monday, 12 April.

I think we'll be finding out one way or another. This week is going to get a bit rowdy.

The pandemic won't be over in a the sense the virus is still effectively running wild on a global basis. But at least in the UK - based on current variants we know about - I think we're already at the stage where the virus isn't going to cause enough trouble to justify lockdowns and the most onerous of social distancing rules.

I think it's a wait and see moment. Israel has seen really good results from vaccination. Chile and the USA aren't really seeing much in terms of case rates falling and even the daily deaths numbers aren't looking that convincing.

The UK so far is seeing deaths falling rapidly and case numbers flattening or even falling (though Easter and school holidays may be impacting those). On herd immunity in the UK, there are a series of generous estimates (about the vaccines and the R rate) built into that model, so that's not necessarily a great way of thinking about it. Optimism is good though. But unless covid rates fall dramatically globally, a new wave with a new mutation is going to mean keeping a close eye on changes.

This adds a bit of flesh to the story:

Best figures today, only 7 deaths beating the 10 deaths last Sunday. Single figures not seen since September. Hopefully numbers stay extremely low despite the mass opening up this week.
