Scunthorpe United vs. Manchester United

Will Keane wasn't involved for the reserves yesterday, maybe an indication that he's gonna be on the bench for tommorow's match.

thats harsh decotron
he is still 18 , will turn 19 in a couple of weeks

he does have a lot of players to compete with and him not making it at united would be a safe-ish bet , but still...

He also might be injured as he went off in the last reserves game, didnt feature for the academy or reserves in subsequent games and wasn't selected for the England u19s.

I hope he gets a bench spot though if fit.

Cheers, that's the most likely explanation then.

Byrne eyes United upset

Scunthorpe captain Cliff Byrne is hopeful of causing a Carling Cup shock against Manchester United in their third round tie.

Carling Cup holders United visit Glanford Park on Wednesday aiming to take another step in their bid to retain the trophy.

Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to ring the changes to his starting XI, but Byrne knows whoever they face will prove a major threat to the home side.

"I think if we have any chance [of winning] it is going to be at home depending on what team they send, but we feel very confident at home and if we get the crowd behind us with a full house you never know," Byrne told Sky Sports News.

"The gaffer has tried to second guess [Ferguson's selection], but whatever team comes out will be full of internationals, full of quality so we will need to be on our toes from the get go.

"We know it's going to be a tough task, but we have got a certain way of playing football and we will stick to our principles and hopefully it will be a good game for the neutral and we will come out with a positive result.

"Attack is the best form of defence that's the gaffer's outlook and us as players like to play like that.

"We will take chances, we will take risks, but you have got to give as good as you get."

Byrne is enjoying working under caretaker manager Ian Baraclough following the departure of Nigel Adkins to Southampton.

"It has been really good [under Baraclough], he is very bubbly, very enthusiastic and has got some really good ideas that he is looking to introduce slowly but surely."

Interesting to see no Fabio.

I'd say that its not that accurate as manutd.com (Today at OT) states that SAF was interviewed this mornig and revealed that Ajose has been given the number 38 shirt for tomorrow night, also mentioned that Macheda and Bebe will feature.

meh a bit pointless imo. He'll be one of the first out the door in the next year or so...

gotta disagree there. He's underrated. Not saying he will make it but over the last two years, you can't really fault him. It's hard to say what will happen but he certainly won't be shown the door next year.

I really want to see Obertan get some time. With Valencia's injury, we're going to be needing another winger and I'd like to see him get his chance to impress.

Bebe will make his highly anticipated Manchester United debut in the Carling Cup on Wednesday, more than a month after manager Sir Alex Ferguson signed the unproven Portuguese striker without seeing him play.

Ferguson has been forced to fend off critics who have questioned the wisdom of paying 7.4 million pounds (C$11.9 million) for a 20-year-old player who has never featured at a higher level than the Portuguese third division.

The 68-year-old manager didn't even both watching videos of Bebe in action before the transfer from Vitoria Guimaraes was completed last month, relying instead on the recommendations of former assistant manager Carlos Queiroz and United's scout.

Some English papers have already branded Bebe an expensive flop based on his appearances for United's reserve team.

But Ferguson is ready to include Bebe in the first team for the first time as United begins its League Cup defence at second-tier side Scunthorpe in the third round.

"A lot of my young players will play. Bebe is training very well," Ferguson said Tuesday. "He'll be involved tomorrow night."

And Lisbon-born Bebe has appealed for patience.

"I am going to be a brilliant player for Manchester United," he said. "After a couple more games I will be better. I have to be fitter because it's a different type of football in England."

Bebe left Estrela Amadora three months ago after the team gained promotion to Portugal's second division, but only featured in six friendlies for Vitoria Guimaraes before being lured to United.

"I can play on both sides, on the left and the right," Bebe said. "It doesn't make any difference which side."

Obertan Gibson Anderson Park

Owen Hernandez

Macheda

If that squad list is correct (probably isnt) I could see a team like this being picked. Ferdinand could definitely do with more minutes and I expect Bebe to come on in the second half.

I'd imagine Ferdinand will stay at home until he is completely rid of his sickness to stop it spreading through the team. Giggs has caught it already!

Macheda more than capable of doing the lone striker role with Bebe and Obertan in support.

If all is not going well, bring on Owen or Hernandez.

Fitness/team news

Scunthorpe will assess the fitness of defender Rob Jones, who has been suffering from a knee problem.

Jim McNulty may miss out again with an ankle complaint, while winger Garry Thompson (groin) is out until November.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to rest the bulk of the side that beat Liverpool.

Michael Owen will start up front, with the likes of Javier Hernandez, Bebe, Anderson, Darron Gibson and Gary Neville also expected to play.

Preview

Carling Cup holders Manchester United begin the defence of their crown with a trip into unchartered territory on Wednesday, taking on Scunthorpe for the first time in competitive action.

United's record in this competition is intimidating. They have lifted the trophy in three of the last five seasons, and last suffered a knock-out defeat in September 2007, when Championship side Coventry stunned them at Old Trafford.

Despite recent criticism of his selection policy, Sir Alex Ferguson will make wholesale changes to the side that registered a thrilling victory over Liverpool on Sunday, with hat-trick hero Dimitar Berbatov almost certain to be rested.

While Ferguson has taken charge of well over 1000 Manchester United matches, Scunthorpe caretaker boss Ian Baraclough is gearing up for only his third game in football management. The former QPR defender has presided over one win and one defeat since being placed in temporary charge following Nigel Adkins' departure to Southampton, and will relish the opportunity to pit his wits against one of the game's most famous names.

Match facts

Scunthorpe

• The Iron achieved a club record place in the fourth round last season, when Manchester City defeated them 5-1 at Eastlands.

• This is their third successive home tie, having dismissed League One Oldham and Sheffield Wednesday in the previous two rounds.

• The Iron have found the back of the net in six successive League Cup ties, and in nine of the last 10.

• Scunthorpe are chasing a fourth win in six league and cup outings.

Manchester United

• The last time United were eliminated from the Carling Cup was a third-round defeat at the hands of Championship side Coventry in September 2007.

• They are trying to win the League Cup for the third season in a row. The only club to achieve that previously was Liverpool, who won the competition four seasons on the bounce between 1981 and 1984.

• The Red Devils have been finalists eight times, and winners on four occasions.

Has Rio recovered from the Flu? If he has I'd like to see;

PIG

Rafael Ferdinand Smalling Fabio
Bebe Anderson Gibson Obertan
Macheda Hernandez

Am going to miss this as I'm working, annoyed as I love these games away against lower league opposition.

Bebe to score, caf to explode.

I'd go with that team, but I'd expect Owen over Macheda.

Do I have to make a prediction for the Carling Cup aswell? :(

away against a lower league team is always tough for us
just hope complacency doesnt creep it

nani stepped up , berba stepped up .. time for ando to shine

either scores or plays a great through ball for hernandez

Fergie has said Owen will start. Shame, I was hoping for Kiko and Hernadez up top. Don't think either of them deserve to be benched.

Owen needs game time though, I'd like to see Macheda start as its bound to be a physical game. I am looking forward to this alot more than I should be for a 3rd Round Carling Cup tie.

I'd love to know what Fergie's plans for Owen are. I can't imagine the likes of Kiko Macheda will remain at united for too long unless he gets games as well, and if he can't start an early carling cup game...when exactly will he start?

I get Owen is probably a better choice given his experience. But is Owen going to be a united player in a few years time? Fergie no doubt knows best, but I have this bad feeling next summer some Italian club will bid for Kiko and we'll lose him like we did Pique (and in a few years time we'll be kicking ourselves for not giving him enough chances).

I'll be nervous with too many changes and new faces, players returning from injuries, with little or no fitness

Pique would've gone even if we had given him chances, the allure of going to his hometown club was too much too handle for Pique.
