Scunthorpe United vs. Manchester United

TWG website (reasonably reputable) is listing our travelling squad as

Team (from): Kuszczak, Amos, Neville, Rafael, Brown, Ferdinand, Smalling, De Laet, Dudgeon, Anderson, Park, Obertan, Gibson, W Keane, C Evans, Eikrem, Owen, Hernandez, Macheda, Bebe.

Interesting to see no Fabio.

Compare with Manchester Evening News Squad ...

Kuszczak, Amos, Neville, Rafael, Fabio, O’Shea, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, (J) Evans, Smalling, Evra, Anderson, Fletcher, Park, Gibson, Nani, Hernandez, Owen, Macheda, Bebe

hmm I don't think so (maybe Fabio if fit)...

I love these games. It's a chance to look at some potential talents and it's not the end of the world if it goes to shit.

Same here :) Not too bothered by the league cup, though it's a nice way to start the end of the season by winning it.

And we'll get to see Bebe, Anderson gets a proper look in, Smalling... I was hoping Eikrem would be deemed worthy of a start, or even just a sub's appearance would appease me :)

I think it's obvious fergie doesn't rate him too highly and I can understand why. He's got some good areas to his game but never consistently excels.

This squad is not right as Corry Evans said in his interview that he is in the squad for this game.

How do you know that SAF doesn't rate Eikrem? He was on the bench v Wolves last year and was consistently excelling at the time and has been the best reserve player again this season.

I'd prefer Eikrim to Park, I'd save Park for the Bolton and Valencia ( :( ) games.

Heh. He's had incredible development according to our youth team and strokes the ball around with vision with incredible ease. For his football brain alone he's worth having faith in. He's only 20, which isn't old for the centre of the park.

I'd like to see Eikrem get a start but I just can't see it happening. He played a full reserves game a couple of days ago. Maybe he'll come on for 15 minutes towards the end.

I'd agree - I think people look to age that they get their first Carling Cup/European dead rubber runout too much for whether a player will make it (with the idea propagated being that the closer to twenty the lower the chance of making it). Those people should bear in mind that Scholes made his first ever appearances for us about a month and a half before his 20th birthday.

I reckon now it'll be.

---------------------- KUSZCZAK -----------------------
RAFAEL ---- FERDINAND ------ SMALLING ----- FABIO
OBERTAN ------- GIBSON ------- ANDERSON --- PARK

Reckon Bebe will come off the bench.

wonder what bebe will have to do to get a decent rating from the tabloids....

two goals at least

That's a strong team, love to see Anderson back and Owen and Macheda could be an interesting partnership

Pique would've gone even if we had given him chances, the allure of going to his hometown club was too much too handle for Pique.

We'll never know for sure. He was 4th choice at United and never really had a chance (fair enough, Vida and Rio were on form). With Barca he was in the first team within 6 months. I'm sure they told him this before they bid for him, so of course he'd be excited to go back home.

If a team like Lazio, Roma or Palermo bid for Kiko and offer him first team action he'd be fool to stay with us with 4 strikers ahead of him. That's my point. Ultimately some of these top rated foreign prospects will want consistent games, and Fergie seems to be favoring Owen over Kiko this season.

I personally don't understand why. Owen doesn't represent the future. Kiko does.

I believe the manager was talking about Pique getting around 30 matches the next season. Which would have made him 3rd choice, no?

Agreed.

If Fergie didnt rate him - he wouldnt be playing for United at the age of 20. He would have been shipped off long time ago

While he was with us I always felt Fergie rated Evans higher, so i'm not sure I believe him when he says he'd have given Pique that many games. I think Evans would have got the lions share.

Of course, that was the season Rio started to turn into a crock, so who knows. Our luck, we sold a world class defender for peanuts, 12 months later our world class defenders back starts to go and a few years later we end up buying a 4th place defender for double the money we sold Pique for.

But that's the past....right now, I'm just hoping Kiko gets 20+ games this season. I have a feeling end of this season we will know just how good he can become, and next summer the Italians will come sniffing round him with first team action to hasten his return back home.

Chuck in Hernandez for Owen or Kiko and I agree

Well it was mid 20s or 30 games. I dont remember the exact number and google isnt helping me out, but it was a lot of games. He definitely regarded Pique higher hence he tried hard to keep him at the club with these promises. It wasnt going to happen given the club coming in for him.

Chris eagles, Luke Chadwick, Oliver gill, Paul mcshane, phil bardsley, Danny Simpson.

If fergie rated him he'd have played first team by now and would be in tonight.

According to Twitter, Starting 11:

Kuszczak, Neville, Rio, Smalling, Fabio, Park, Gibbo, Ando, Obertan, Owen, Macheda.

According to DT Guardian:

Fergie not at the #MUFC match tonight. Trying to find out why. Rumour he is in Spain.

Maybe he's meeting Ronaldo :D

Only got Nev wrong.

Subs: VDS, Wes, De Laet, Bebe, Ajose, Rafael, Chicharito

Surpised Amos is not there. Who's Ajose?

DTguardian - Valencia playing tonight, could be that Fergie on spying mission though unconfirmed #MUFC

No CMs on the bench. I presume Rafael is the option if required. Which could help explain why he's not starting, too.

assuming ha_rooney's team is the right one of course.

edit: It isnt

Eikrem's had to overcome more than most. He had to have an operation because of a condition that made it harder for him to breathe than for others. He developed diabetes too, and isn't really a muscly type. He'll have to mature more before he can be introduced into the hustle and bustle of the centre of the park. Gibbo's ahead of him, both in years and in terms of having proven himself, and Anderson's to be given a shot tonight... I don't see any huge slight towards him in the fact that he's not going to start tonight. Nor if he's not even on the bench. Fergie's patient and he trusts the support he has around him in the club, which has been following Eikrem with great interest. As have I, and he's blown me away at times with his passing and vision in the centre of the park, so I'm confident we'll see him get his chance at some point.
