Man Utd interested in Sergio Ramos & Bastian Schweinsteiger
By Simon StoneBBC Sport
Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

United boss Louis van Gaal is trying to strengthen his squad after his side finished fourth in the Premier League.

Germany international Schweinsteiger, 30, and 29-year-old Spain player Ramos could be targets.

Ramos' contract with Real expires in 2017, while Schweinsteiger's Bayern deal runs until 2016.

More to follow.

Apparently Madrid is asking for £45m ...

 CRAZY !

They will probably ask for De Gea and £25m or something they can go do one as far as I'am concerned.

Ramos is 29 years old and on ridiculously high wages

Hope we don't go for him if those are the conditions. I'd happily pay £25m for him but not £45m... Much rather have Otamendi in that case. In fact much rather have Otamendi in any case.

No he's not on ridiculous high wages. Hence why this has come out.

Means nothing. Can't remember the last time we briefed the press about our interest in a player with us actually ending up signing him

exactly. why is everyone getting excited because of mere 'interest'? of course we're interested. this doesn't mean anything.

I guess the idea is that we wouldn't be 'briefing' the press if we were not confident of signing then as it wouldn't look good.

That may be true for schweinsteiger, but not so sure about Ramos. It may be we are using him to wind up madrid with the de gea transfer and his camp are happy to leak this to help with his contract negotiations.

What we have to gain by telling press we are interested in schweinsteiger is beyond me.

I wonder how many players Ed told them we wanted in exchange for De Gea before they finally settled on Ramos?

:D We've seen it play out lol

I can only think of one reason, which is to keep anxious muppets occupied for a few days. Which obviously is scraping the barrel for reasons

Woodward didn't release info on any players we didn't get last season, as I recall. We kept everything very under wraps until the deals were basically done. He's clearly learned from his previous mistakes.

So Madrid could effectively force out Ramos so they can sign de gea, and will then probably sign otamendi as a replacement.

Not sure we are getting the best deal
There really :annoyed:

So now people prefer a CB that had one good season in Europe and is 27 to arguably the best CB in the world? OK.
Agreee, bizarre really. It's as if people have just got caught up in all this Otamendi talk and just really want him now, despite a lot of them probably seen very little of him.

Ramos is a proven world class CB, Otamendi is a expensive one season wonder so far and a much bigger risk. Would take Ramos every day above Otamendi, it's not like he is much younger either.

Would be still a pretty shock for me if he really leaves Real. He will just act a little bit pissed for 2 weeks and then they will give him a good payrise and that's it.

Makes sense really, he's gone in 2 years so he doesn't really have time to develop players.

Indeed, we also invested quite heavily last summer in young/not quite established talents. We also have already signed Depay

Wherever he's been LVG has always left having brought up some good young players. I would imagine he'd want to the same with us, leave us with an established core group with some younger players who he's given the chance to gain some experience.

Agreed. Even earlier this month, we were denying that we were in for some player...can't remember who exactly. Varane/Benzema, was it?

He is on 6 million a year at Madrid and the media saying he wants to 10 million for his next contract (here or at Madrid).
I take it that would be Euros? Anyway £130,000-140,000 for a player of his calibre wouldn't be that bad of a deal. Especially if we can offload RVP and have already offloaded Falcao on much bigger wages. It would still be half Rooneys wage.

yeah, Depay, Januzaj, Perreira, McNair...He will leave us with a good squad and a good system but feels like he's signing players for short-term gain which I don't mind btw, we need experience and leadership in the squad and both Ramos and Bastian have won everything there is to win and are natural leaders.

He can buy established players to slot into the first XI and win the league, whilst developing a playing style which the younger players get used to via League Cup games, reserve games, etc.

Exactly, as I mentioned we need experience and leadership so it makes sense.

In general as human beings they both may be twats in equal amounts but on the football pitch Busquests is a bigger twat as his cnutiness really influences the play with his diving and general moaning.

.
Cant say I agree.
Ramos' behavior influences the play too with his fouling, dirtiness and so on.
But you're all for that to get a win so that's that.

He's on the same amount of wages Ashley Young is on currently.

Which isn't high wages in this day.

James Cooper on SSN just said it's more likely that Ramos and De Gea will be playing in the white of Madrid next season.

Hes no more of a twat on the field than Terry and at least hes not a racist

Signing this guy doesnt get me excited, but he'll be useful to have I guess. Spanish defence to prem at 29.

Hmmmmmmm

Wish the BBC would finally get the Memphis transfer fee bloody right

It's really irritating because many people and sites will start to use it as if it's the actual fee.

That's exactly what I thought.

Turning your nose at Sergio Ramos. I don't get this place at times.

Why are people suddenly against players because they're not saints? Yes, he fouls, yes, he winds strikers up? So?

Madrid can feck off, we've given them Ruud and Beckham at ridiculously low prices and we're about to give them arguably the 2nd/3rd best keeper in the world for a pittance, yet they still have the audacity to expect us to pay £45million for Sergio Ramos of all people.
