Last season in thix fixture United won 0-2, with May scoring a terrific long range shot. Not sure why he's not playing tonight though.

Butt will probably play only 60 minutes. Ricky Sbragia has managed 4 runner's up positions in the reserve's league and won it once I think, but this is only his second game in charge of the United reserves, as there was a very long winter break with many games postponed. Will be interesting to see how match fit the players are.

They're lining up as follows:
Carroll
Lynch Roche Pugh Rankin
Chadwick Stewart Butt Richardson
Davis Nardiello

Pugh is being tried at CB for the first time, seems to be a policy of the reserves to try the players in various positions, presumably to ensure well-rounded players.

Nardiello has first shot on goal, keeper closes him down well though.

BUTT SCORES!!!!!! 7mins gone, corner comes to the corner of the area, and he slams it into the far corner, great goal!

Richardson just did a lovely flick over his defender, tried to then get past but was fouled, shame as it was a lovely bit of skill.

Nicky Butt is playing as playmaker, with Stewart the defensive midfielder.

Nardiello given offside, but finishes anyway. United so far completely in control, Sheffield yet to have a chance on goal.

Chadwick seems to have gained a bad habit from Beckham of coming infield, rather than staying wide and trying to beat his full back.

Morrison takes his side's first shot on goal which Carroll gets down well to make the save of. Was a nice dribble into the box by him before shooting.

Davis takes a shot on goal from the edge of the box, but slices it wide of the post.

Wednesday haev another shot on goal, also a long distance effort, but a weak shot thats easy for Carroll.

Kieran unleashed a fiercesome shot on target from wide left, took a good reaction save by their keeper to save it.

Morrison takes another shot, deflected for a corner kick, he's very comfortable on the ball that player - their biggest threat so far.

Stewart plays a one two with Chadwick, but Stewart is muscled to the ground on the return ball, but no foul was given strangely.

feck, should've scored. Chadwick ghosts through the defence from the left, floats a cross to Davis who was unmarked but his header hit the crossbar came out to Nardiello who's shot was punched out by the keeper.

Starting to build some pressure, and camping outside their box.

Carroll and the CB's struggle to clear their lines, inevitably drawing a shot on goal, from wide, which Carroll snatched out of the air.

Lynch overlaps Chadwick's run, receives the ball but his cross goes out as he's tackled late and hard, might have cut his knee.

Not the greatest reserves game I've watched, wednesday have pressed and tackled hard. Our defending has been shaky, as usual, but so far they've kept them out. Our short passing has been good, but the longer passing has been poor, and the crosses.

With 20 seconds of stoppage time, we've conceded a free kick just outside the area, which was hit hard and high by Morrison.

HT Sheffield Wednesday 0 - Manchester United 1
Nicky Butt scored on 7mins with a belter.

Butt's looked very rusty as expected, he's been out for ages, but despite that, he did hit one helluva shot for his goal. Those with MUTV, check out his goal on Red Hot News.

Davis misses an absolute sitter, hits over the bar with his left foot from just a few yards out, unmarked - Nardiello played the centre to him. Wednesday haven't had possession yet this half.

Knight's (a right mouthy cnut according to Macari apparently) squared up with Richardson, who gave verbal back as much as he took it, the cause was a very soft foul by Richardson on him.

Butt's coming off on 54mins for Neil Wood. Expect Butt will make one or two more reserve appearances.

Fletcher also coming on for Stewart. Should be a more creative central midfield now, which we've been lacking.

Nardiello put through with an over the top ball by Wood, hits a left foot shot which the keeper parries away one handed.

Lynch makes a clearnce after a goalmouth scramble, we could do with getting our second goal to make sure of the result.

Chadwick cuts inside, between 2 defenders, and hits a strong shot on goal, but the keeper puts it out for a corner. Nardiello heads just wide from the corner. Got to take these chances.

Chadwick's playing wider this half and taking his men on, probably because we now have more creative players in central midfield.

Wednesday making two subs, Wilson on for Green, and McMahon for Connolly. 66mins.

So that's 2 goals from corners. Takes the first team a whole season to manage that.

FT 0-2 to United. Not the greatest performance, the finishing was a bit sloppy as was the effort imo, but they've managed to keep a clean sheet, and Ricky's got his first win, Butt a terrific goal and a good performance from Richardson.

He should've scored another from a corner too. He had one or two other chances as well, and this was on a bit of an offday for him and the team. BTW Richardson takes the corners, and he's good at it.

Well it's hard to play after a month's gap they are entitled to be a little rusty and out of sync - but good to hear richardson had a good game and for Butt it's just a matter of getting the games in again - look how much better Keane is playing after 4-5 games.

Thanks for the commentary BTW - makes a dull afternoon at work go by a little quicker.

Morrisons from my home town Derry. a good player on the ball alright but needs to learn when to release it.
