Nice to finally have it confirmed that they saw Sneijder as a number 10 and not someone to play in central midfield. Of course Red Cafe had completely dismissed that possibility when we were being linked with the player last Summer (hello Sharky). Nasri was also no doubt earmarked for the number ten role. The coaching team are obviously looking for an improvement on Rooney (and Berbatov) in that position and that's where Kagawa will play.
 
He's got 30 caps for Japan and missed out last year because he was injured for large parts of the year. There's no way a work permit can be the issue. He's still with Japan so I'd guess people are getting impatient and looking for an easy story.

You may well be right GCHQ but I don't see where you just got "confirmation" of that. I'd take anything Rene says with a pinch of salt, the man is a media whore.

I certainly think you're right now though, Kagawa is for the 10 role, so there's every chance Nasri/Sneijder were too.
 
Also if the quotes are to be believed and we are looking for a #10, that implies we are looking for a shift away from 4-4-2 to a lone striker system, probably 4-2-3-1.

In practice we've been playing 4-4-1-1 for the last 18 months so there's no telling whether Kagawa being signed will result in a huge change of emphasis or not. I'm more inclined to think not because Sir Alex likes his wide men to help their full backs defend and we do not have two dogged centre midfield players who be spoilers like City do, which lets their front 4 have no real defensive role. What Kagawa will do is add to the depth of the squad and give Sir Alex more options about how to use other players especially Rooney.

If Welbeck starts next season with a hat trick and is banging them in in training Sir Alex will find a way to play him. Sir Alex doesn't tend to drop players he feels can win him matches. If he thinks Welbeck has winning form in him he'll find a way to play him.

As I said what this will do is give us more depth to our squad and more options. There's no harm in having a squad full of difference makers.

I hope we see that a lot, Nani holding the width, Welbeck pulling out to the left with Wayne shifting up and Kagawa drifting in pulling defenders everywhere with good movement.

I can't understand why people still don't grasp that we need a squad to compete. Signing Kagawa may mean Welbeck and Hernandez play slightly less games but it also means we're able to rest players more often and keep them fit for the crunch time at the end of the season.

We can't refrain from signing top players that may or may not hinder the progress of other players that may or may not make it.

Yep, and they will only play less games if Kagawa shows that he is better than them. If Welbeck can show that he's a better option than Kagawa, or Rooney, or even Young, Nani or Valencia in a 3 then he'll be in.
 
Indeed. All players have peaks and dips in form over the course of the season and I'm confident there would be spells where Welbeck would be favoured over Kagawa (or even Rooney during his lean spell) as long as the results are delivered.
 
Its a win win situation for us, as we will have the necessary squad depth to deal with injuries, fatigue, and suspensions, during 50-60 fixture league and cup season.
