Shinji Kagawa

I recall when we sold Beckham to Real, a few months later it was reported they had recouped the transfer fee paid in shirt sales alone.

And then later reported it was complete rubbish, of course, because while Beckham's shirt sales alone might've added up to that amount it didn't take into account how much of a % Beckham and Adidas took out of it, never mind the fact the important figure is what the overall increase in shirt sales was - it goes without saying that many people who bought Beckham shirts would've bought Figo, Zidane or Ronaldo shirts if Beckham didn't make the move.

And dont we receive a fixed amount by Nike, regardless of number of shirt sales? Yes, perhaps our advertisement value goes up, but to say shirt sales is wrong eh?

Indeed, but to be fair when people say shirt sales it's just the lazy way of saying we'll make more money through marketing, merchandise etc. And we will...yet somehow that's turned into a negative. There's absolutely nothing to suggest that was a key factor in us signing Kagawa, it's just a handy bonus. We signed an excellent young player on the cheap. He'll offer benefits to the club off the pitch. feck's sake, Glazer's.

Madrid made a hell of a lot off cash of the Beckham brand. Probably not as quickly as was reported. But his spell there they certainly made loads more than what they paid for him. And I am certain his marketability was in their minds when they signed him not just his talent.

We will make loads in the Asian market out of Kagawa. Through various sponsorships, Asian tours, merchandise and our shirt sales in Asia will go up a lot, therefore putting Utd in an even stronger position when it comes to negotiating new Nike deals.

This is not to say he is a bad player or the only reason why we went for him. But it would not be out of the question to think this was one reason why we went after Kagawa or perhaps chose him over a similar in talent player. It would be naive to think otherwise.

Signing for marketing doesn't really work if the players are crap.

For example I doubt Dong sold more shirts in China than Rooney and Ronaldo.

Kagawa is a quality player. His profile is just a bonus.

I can't believe people are seriously trotting out the shirt sales line again, for the sole reason that we didn't spend 'big money'. Absurd. And people seriously decide how good a player is based on how well-known he is. Weirdos. He's a cracking player, we're lucky to have him and it'll take a matter of weeks for everyone to see that.

Only just seen he was voted in the European Team of the year by a collection of Europe's leading sports magazines, not bad at all.

I've never understood it but, for whatever reason, some people like to talk in definitive terms about things they know nothing about. All they see is the name of a player they don't know and a fee that isn't ridiculous and decide that he's useless. Nothing will change that until they see him either. We could sign Mario Gotze on a free transfer and they would complain. Madness.

I'm happy we got Kagawa I have to say. He's a better number ten than Rooney is and, judging by our previous pursuits of Sneijder and Nasri, I would guess that's where he's going to play as opposed to a David Silva type of a thing. With his passing and movement our attack will be a lot more unpredictable next season and I think we're going to do well in Europe (touch wood and all that).

Sir Alex picked him to bring into the squad because he's going to improve it, that's all that he cares about and that's all what should matter to the fans. To suggest our main priority in this signing was regarding what he'd add off the pitch rather than on it is where naivety comes into it, surely.

Article from Raphael Honigstein a German football expert.

"He is not a Japanese version of Tottenham's Luka Modric because pulling the strings in the centre of the pitch is not his game."

Lets hope Ferguson sees this.

I don't think anyone's under the illusion he's here to replace Scholes or was bought as a cheaper alternative to Modric.

I think Modric was seen as primarily an attacking midfielder when he moved over here but has adapted due to having a good enough skill set and concentration/ positional sense to play there. Not to say Kagawa will do the same but he may be able to adapt to a new role.

Sorry, but I do take Sir Alex' judgement of a player more serious than Raphael Honigstein's judgement of a player. Whoever this Raphael Honigstein is.

Fergie has been wrong plenty in the past, particularly about midfielders. Veron, Miller, Djemba x2, Kleberson,Anderson...... the list is long. Anyone remember Alan Smith?

Ah, you're right.

I'll take Raphael Honigstein's judgement of football players before Sir Alex' from now on.

He's brought him to play like Beardsley.

If used properly he can be as good as Özil and Hazard. He played in the same league as Özil did for the first years of his career and did as well if not better than him. You're really underrating him here.

In fact, in Ozil's last German season he got exactly the same amount of goals and assists combined in the same amount of league starts as Kagawa got this year at Dortmund.

29 starts 21 goals and assists.

The World Cup made Ozil famous.

So who today said he ain't as good as he is or he is only here for shirt sales? Someone says that everyday, who is it today?

Who the feck said he was signed to pull the strings as Honigstein put it? He (Honigstein) himself has many more than positive words to say about him, so bringing Sir Alex's judgement into discussion is pointless. Everything he said is that Kagawa is not Modric type of midfielder and some of you stick to that as if Modric's style was a fecking benchmark according to which we decide whether the player is good enough.

He is different to Modric, is more mobile, more of a goalscorer and killer pass' maker. He likes to run with he ball at his feet as well, not just bringing others around him into play. He won't sit deep Scholesy-like, but operate between initial midfield line and forwards' area.

Correct.

In fact he is closest in style to Scholes of the mid 90's and early 2000's.

I think after following the player for multiple years and trying to sign him twice, we realise that he's not actually Luka Modric.

According to google translate, Kagawa's name in Kanji is " 香川 "

So who is getting that on the back of their shirt then? The first half looks like a plant
