Shinji Kagawa

Shinji should get another couple of games in the No.10 position, and then it'll be his forever

He was fantastic against Leverkusen imo., it's getting boring now but we really should play him in this bloody hole.

Kagawa needs someone like Giggs or Carrick behind him, playing him those balls through the middle otherwise he will struggle. The way we counter-attacked suited him as our transition between defence and attack was fast paced and meant there was a lot of space for him to operate in, since the Leverkusen players hadn't gotten back into position. When we play our usual game we are often slow and ponderous in the build-up and tend to give the opposition so much time to get ten men organised behind the ball then we are faced with the uphill task of having to struggle to break them down. For that to work more, and we have pacy players, the passing through the middle has to be fast, precise and penetrative. If we go back to a slow build-up style of play, I reckon even playing Kagawa through the middle won't make much difference as imo it's quicker passing through midfield that will help Kagawa shine in our team.

I really like him, he's a real joy to watch at times.

As as far as playing him RvP and Rooney in the same game, we could give a 4-3-1-2 a go, it's narrowish though.

I love Evil Kagawa, genuinely makes me laugh. Worth noting that it's completely wrong about him playing in the hole against Belgium and the Netherlands though - as usual for Japan, Honda played central and Kagawa out wide.

What he needs more than just playing in the hole imo is to have a midfield behind him who constantly plays the right balls to him and mates who are moving around/into space and available for little, quick passing moves. Then he can bring out the best of him but too often we're not mobile enough and our midfield finds it hard to bring the ball forward

Ah feck I just can't take it seriously any more after that.

Escobar season has returned - Nas

The key difference, as you point out, was not simply playing Kagawa in the hole but the movement around him.

Nani was roaming across the length of the pitch, sometimes playing 1-2s with Valencia, Rooney was dropping in towards him, Giggs was advancing towards him. The result of our added dynamism in Germany was that Kagawa had the options and angles to play the quick passes he excels at.

For Kagawa, and for United to excel, we need to have constant movement in the forward areas. Too often this season we've looked like a fussball side with players planted firmly in parts of the field and unwilling to move any closer to each other, hitting long balls and just hoping a floated cross will find its way to somebody.

That's for sure, whoever plays at number 10, if there is no movement then the player is gonna look half the player. Kagawa alone is not the answer for a more fluid attacking play.

I've been looking through some videos of his performances for us this season. One thing I've noticed, is that he actually has managed to improve( ) in 2 aspects of the game after joining us: aerial duels and winning the ball back.

It's not like he's winning a ton of headers, but he's definitely winning more than he used to. His passing with the head is especially good. For being so short and skinny, I think he's as good as we can expect him to be.

Well to be fair, he hardly tried to challenge for headers in the past because he is quite small compared to some of the premier league defenders
But yes I agree, he's definitely improved more defensively and isn't as afraid to get stuck in, and lately he's been a lot more imposing on games, even from the wing.

"I said at the start of the season that sometimes Wayne might have to play up front and Shinji in behind when Robin [van Persie] is injured,”

“I thought Shinji played really well tonight, he was excellent, but he has been excellent when he's played off the left as well. We have some really good players.

Moyes

Big game for him if used in the middle today, and I think he will, Welbeck will stay wide because of Walker probably. Time for him to step up, and to prove if he can threaten Rooney or van Persie for positions.

This is his biggest game for us. He's in his position in a big game away from home.

Huge opportunity for him today. Will be tough in that area with Sandro and Paulinho though.

If he continues to play like this, I am expecting Moyes to sub him off early in second half, possibly even at half time. He isn't playing poorly, but he is almost non-existant.
