It's organized (assuming there are three suspects) so it would seem to indicate some ideology or motive rather than a disgruntled/crazy individual. They didn't rob a bank or anything. The target doesn't seem to be anything particularly high profile or interesting. I guess it could hypothetically be related to narcotics since it's in SoCal and heavy armament of the individuals.

San Bernadino County is majority white (including hispanics). It's about half hispanic.

Reddit is saying an officer was hit by a ricochet so, depending on the area hit, the damage should be less since some amount of energy would be lost in the ricochet.

Edit: Officer is ok according to reports.

Enough of this. Part of me wishes they'd just magically stop reporting on this kind of thing and everyone can just be happy in their ignorance rather than it all being shoved in our faces constantly.
 
Situations like this explain the desire of police forces to "militarize." SWAT teams spread everywhere largely as a result of the North Hollywood Shootout, which involved heavily armed bank robbers who outgunned the cops. It all looks ridiculous until there's a need for it.

Not every officer needs to be militarized but a specialized unit like a SWAT team in appropriate for many police departments. Depends on how much militarization you are talking about...quite easy to go too far as has happened accross the country.
 
Watching live on ABC where 2 Swat vehicles have a black SUV blocked in. There's one suspect on the ground on the other side of the road believed dead and apparently there's another still inside the car.

For the most part they were referring to armoured vehicles, specifically the BearCat.
 
These SWAT teams have some incredible equipment. This mobile bulletproof wall thing they are approaching the car with is insane.

With the armament faced by police in extraordinary situations, it's a major motivation behind it. For the sake of preparedness and quick/effective reaction, there's a desire for there to be a substantial number of officers who are trained and prepared for such situations.

The issue comes when dealing with things like protests. If you show up with the SWAT team, it's going to upset people. The riot squad's a little different although it would probably have similar transport since the heavily armored vehicles can carry more than a patrol car.

I like what we have in France, between all the Special Units we have around 200-250 men, America should have 1500-2000 men who are specialized and militarized. That should be enough?

There are 350m people in the US and about 16 times as much land area. The size of the US means that there have to be far more units because it's not as though you can just call them in within an hour from elsewhere. There's basically a gun for everyone in America, while there's one for every three people in France.
 
America never ceases to amaze...watching a livestream from a helicopter of police officers on a robot that looks like something Treyarch thought up, poking a dead man with a stick. Then the news person tells the reporter to zoom out because they're taking a body out.

I thought Gazza and Raoul Moat couldnt be topped.

I think that it's the best idea but in France they have access to Air Force airplanes. Also like @Sir Matt said, the numbers are probably completely off.
 
Jesus they're now filming swat teams moving through peoples back gardens in search of a 3rd suspect.

If he's got inside a house somewhere, he is sitting there watching exactly where the different teams are.

I'm not so sure. The helicopter panned directly from the SUV to where they are now and the reporter inside it just named the exact two streets they're filming now.
