Should English football be suspended?

I was in favor of a circuit break suspension of two weeks when the cases were peaking with the new variant but now that the rest of the country is in lockdown, the footballers are less likely to mingle and be infected as long as they have their wits about them, so they should continue as usual.

Why not just privately buy vaccines somehow?
FA as a league buying from Pfizer? Surely it's a good commercial for the vaccine too if no new cases are found after giving the vaccine (there's antivaxers out there too)

If Israel can pay a premium for shit loads of vaccines then surely the PL can move a few brown envelopes to get a couple of thousand!
But, that wouldn’t be good for morale either seeing the rich getting special privileges.

No. But the players who keep breaking the rules should be punished, with a lot more than a vague press release promising they 'would be spoken to by the club'

agreed. Frankly they need 5 match bans. Too many players, and too many clubs clearly don’t give a shit.

the PL saying that it’s the clubs responsibility to deal with players is beyond a joke. No responsibility.

If it was actors or TV personalities no one would care but because footballers are being scapegoated they'll be the devil's.

I don't agree with what Dyche said but the scapegoating tone used against football/footballers including by our own politicians throughout all of this has been an absolute disgrace.

All international football should be suspended. It’s both far more riskier, and in no way paints the right picture.

There was an epidemiologist from South Africa on the BBC last week. She was describing how dire the situation is there and how there wasn’t a single vaccine on the African continent yet. Meanwhile the EU had pooled their vast resources together to jump to the front of the queue. It’s the way of the world.

Admittedly it would be tough sell to Daily Mail readers.

I’d be equally outraged if TV personalities got the vaccine maybe even more so.

Sadly you’re right Africa always seems to be last in the queue for anything, doesn’t make it right though.

I think it's hard to sell a full lockdown to ordinary folk who's lives have been turned upside down - while propping up an industry that's full of idiots being payed disgusting amounts of money who can't even be arsed following the rules.
Footballers are far from the worst. Piers Morgan has been lecturing normal people calling them “covidiots” for months while breaking lockdown rules himself twice. Well, he’s been caught twice, presumably done it several more times.

This makes no sense. A circuit breaker two weeks ago when there was no lockdown would have been pointless and just caused nothing but fixture congestion. Now the country is in lockdown it is the perfect time to have one given that in 2 weeks time the number of cases will be much lower.

Because this is essentially a bubble now with the players encountering no one else but immediate family and others in the football world in their daily lives.

I pray for the day people stop employing this prick. He’s not allowed on in our house. Vile human being.

I've come full circle since last year.

The pl have handled this so well upto now.t

Keep it going but they need to punish players that break rules and very harshly.

Yeah agreed.

Anyway as long as fans do not attend matches I don't see a reason to stop the league.

I was thinking this the other day and I saw Bruce's quotes which have further highlighted the issue. Theoretically it should fine to continue but we've seen so many footballers throw parties or be caught out socialising that it'll get to the point where they have to stop it in my opinion. Too much margin for human error with the amount of people involved - one solution is some of the bigger clubs have massive indoor training grounds with multiple pitches that don't need all the staff (and risk of covid) that come with a full stadium, surely they can just play televised games inside if needs be, it's not like we miss out on atmosphere at the stadiums when they are empty.

He buggered off to France in the summer aswell which in itself isn't a cnutish thing or a rule back but he actively bragged about rushing back to dodge quarentine and has the brass neck to sham others for breathing.

Early on in this pandemic I couldn't work out if he was acting the way he is because he was frightened himself or trying to build his profile. Well I did think one was more likely but gave him the benefit of the doubt.

But his jaunt to France in the summer gave me the answer beyond any doubt.

They have handled it well, I agree, but it's getting to a point where they need to push back games more and it's starting to look less good. Matches like Villa vs Pool tonight are a farce, as it would be if we were playing an U23 team.

The whole thing is being affected by the planned Euros in the Summer, which is the most spectacularly stupid idea that it doesn't need more than a second of thought to realise it's completely about money.

I dont want it to stop.. but, football isnt essential. If they are shutting all non essential things down, this should be too. If not, no.

If the footballers' lives are at risk, then by all means, suspend. If they follow their burden rules correctly, they should only be at minimal risk. Suspending football does nothing to reduce the national burden of disease, so it serves no purpose to suspended just out of solidarity. If anything, like Ole said, sporta are useful for mental wellbeing during lockdown.

As said, earlier, lockdown means football people are less likely to mingle. Let the suits figure out scheduling, and decide what international tournaments/games will need to go to compensate for league disruptions.

Yep but it’s going to take a couple of weeks for the virus to calm down. That’s when a firebreaker would make sense so we don’t get loads of games in a shambolic state like the Villa game tonight. Then in 2 weeks the risk of COVID in football will be a lot lower as the effects of the lockdown will be starting to work.

If we had a fire breaker when there wasn’t a lockdown, what good would that do? The players would still have to train and would be living in a non-lockdown situation (not in the bubble you refer to), so the virus would be rampant anyway and still when they came back.

If the players weren't idiots a brief break would be fine as they could isolate and bubble again but you just know they won't.

I don't immediately hate the idea of vaccinating footballers as long as the charity contribution was sizeable. Significant club contributions and players giving their wages to schools would do it.

Vaccinate the players. Football is good for the morale of the country.

I did suggest that in another thread. Presume it could impact on performance levels however? Not sure I would want to take it if I was a young player with the potential to earn millions n the future based on my physical abilities....that might be impacted long term by the vaccine perhaps?

However leaving that aside, a mere 1000 vaccinations should do the trick to keep the prem going? Yes some folk probably need it more (though isn't there about 1m vaccinated already in the UK? ) but football is providing entertainment for the masses at the moment and is positively impacting mental health etc (unless you are a scouser of course noting recent results!).

Footballers shouldn't be prioritised with vaccinations and talk of that is ridiculous, and frankly disrespectful to those who will be getting it first.

It'll ravage the lower leagues, but there's zero chance the Premier League is stopped. Too much £££ involved.

It would have been sensible to have planned for the need to take a break at some point, by taking some matches out of the system before the season started. But every football body has insisted on their full slice of the pie and there has been no joined up planning, so they are in another pickle again, mostly of their own making.

How is it working in the lower leagues? In Scotland all professional and semi-professional leagues continue to play despite testing only being in place in the top division. Perhaps that first step is to stop any football where testing and bubbles are not in place, before having to pull the trigger on the sport in the top tier.

Hope it doesn’t stop but it feels silly now with so many cases what if someone actually dies.

I doubt any footballer would die. You hardly see other rich people dying of Corona. And before anyone bites, it's not because I believe in conspiracy theories, but rich people generally get better threatment, plus footballers are generally healthy, so they probably have bigger probability having major injuries while playing football than dying of Covid.

I get joy from loads of things I can't do at the moment, cinema, bowling, bars etc. Football shouldn't be the exception, they all have families to and the virus won't go easy on those who work in the game.

How are you getting joy from things you can't do?!

it’s got far more to do with age and fitness. But logic would also suggest private medical care would give you a better chance of recovery - but age and fitness is a bigger factor.

that’s are hardly any people who have died under 30.

I think it would be akin to scrapping the season. When would the games be played? At some point we have to catch up and get back to a regular schedule and there's not much leeway this season going into the Euros/next season.

I could definitely envisage a scenario, though, where we're top of the league after 30 games and then the entire season is cancelled. Would feel very 2020/21.

Of course, age and fitness is probably the most important thing, but also footballers being rich (and footballers though) means they get diagnosed pretty soon too, which is also good thing from what I know.

Absolutely not. People are suffering mentally and you want one of the few distractions we have to stop? Come on man, give us a break.

yes, the fact they are tested all the time is important.

It'd be like a weird sort of history repeating itself after the Cavani "racism" ban and then us fretting about it being scrapped. While Liverpool fans gleefully hope it is.

I dare say by the time we've played a couple of those big clubs away our hopes will have become more realistic.

There are people who have tested positive after receiving Pfizer's vaccine so I don't think this will help.
