Sir Ryan Giggs

Not more disappointing than anyone else - did you write that in Rooney's thread, Vidic's thread, Velencia's etc etc? Or is it the age argument all over.

Don't be ridiculous, I've not got onto them yet, and Vidic disappointing? Right.

Did okay.

Gave the ball away a lot through poor choices. Which is part of the package when playing him in CM.

About as good as Fellaini minus the red I'd say all in all, which was average.

Vidic hoofs the ball too much and lost some duels that I expected him to win - I thought Rio was better tonight.

So because of his passing game, that means he was disappointing? He made a couple of crucial tackles and was solid throughout. Judging him based on his passing, when Giggs/Fellaini didn't drop deep is very harsh.

What made Giggs so disappointing then? You offered no arguments what so ever.

I thought he was fine :nervous:

He carried the ball forward, did his defensive work and covered a lot of ground with his usual work-rate - pretty much what I'd want from a winger being played in central-midfield.

Thought he was fine. Bout a 6 out of 10. Same as most bar Evra who was excellent and our forwards, who were actually disappointing.

I've offered you one argument: not dropping deep. Ferdinand and Vidic on the ball, look up, see no one drop deep, pass ball to De Gea, or they hoof the ball up. The other negatives were his range of passing today and involvement - I really expected him to get more involved when the game was more open.

He had some decent forward passes - one to Kagawa that was brilliant. I agree that he doesn't drop deep enough, but Rio and Vidic are too static these days. I remember when Rio would dribble his way past a midfielder or two to create space for the midfielders - now there's too much distance between them. It's partly Giggs and Fellaini's fault, but also part CB's fault. But overall, fair enough - I don't think it was disappointing though, just a bit average.

He'll always look comfortable in a game like that. Used possession fairly well and attempted to defy his age with a few dribbles again, unsuccessfully though. I'm surprised he didn't create some better chances for us. We needed more clever passes in that final third.

Thought he did well. Not great but did his job. Congratulations to him for another great achievement.

I think he did well to be fair, not good, but not so bad some are making him out to be... Better than Fellaini...

Usually the first to criticise him but I've no complaints about tonight. His corners are hilarious, however. It's as if he placed a bet on himself 10 years ago, at massive odds, that he'll never take another corner that beats the first defender again and he's so close to the pay out he just can't bring himself to deny the winnings.

I can't believe we're still using a nigh on 40 year old football away from home in the Champions League in a two man midfield. It's insane really.

It is but, you know what? I fecking love him for it.

We bossed the possession stats.

Was more to do with how inept Sociedad were than us really. Giggs gave a typically passable 40-year-old Giggs performance tonight. Which is to say it's fairly well done, albeit against a team that was never going to trouble him much in midfield. The pace of the game was so slow and they gave him so much time on the ball that Giggs actually looked fast without ever breaking out of a trot. I'd actually like to see him press up more and get into crossing positions more often. His crosses are still quality, much more so than his long passes which often go to no one in particular.

So, play him left wing then? Because he's not going to do that playing in a midfield two away in Europe. He was much better last season when Fergie switched him to the left. Away to Swansea. He's probably still our best left winger, at 40...

Sad but true. In terms of skills he is undoubtedly still our best left winger. Problem is he struggles to consistently beat the younger FBs for pace nowadays, which is no fault of his. You are comparing a 40 year old man to guys almost half his age anyway. Still, Giggs has got to be the fastest and most mobile 40 year old playing in a top flight league of any sort. Thought having said that, I fully expect Januzaj to become our best left winger by season's end.

I still can't believe just how old he is. 35-36 is considered ancient at this level, and that's centre backs and keepers. Soon to be playing in central midfield in the champions league in his fifth decade. Madness.

Don't see him making it. He'll do well to rack up 49 games even if he plays on for the entirety of next season.

It'll be interesting to see how much higher on the appearance count he can get this season. He's on 951 right now, and we have 27 games left to play in the league (he'll probably want to play in the next game against Cardiff for obvious reasons), 2 more games in the Champions League group with at least 2 games in the Champions League or Europa knock-out stage, at least 1 more game in the league cup (against Stoke) and a game in the FA cup (against whichever Premier League side we get drawn against in the third round this time). He should get past 960 this season, maybe 970 not out of the question?

From there one more season as player/coach after this one and he should get past 1,000 appearance for the club - but I'm not sure he'll play on just to reach that milestone, he doesn't seem that bothered every time he passes some record or other.

Just saw a little thing on him on one of the Champions League weekly shows. We all have our opinions on his role at the moment but when you look back at his career and especially in Europe, you can't help but love him even more. Really hope he grabs a goal this season, like said above, we should put him on penalty duty (I'm kidding).

It will be good to see him in this Class of 92 film.

Just me that feels the "scored every season" record is utterly meaningless? It is entirely coincidental to more important records like appearances. Any half decent attacker can claim to managed at least one goal in every season he's played.
