I thought it was standard, generic Ole.

Although, he did imply that the reason for the club not buying another attacker this window was to avoid hampering Greenwood's development, which not only sounds suspect but it puts unnecessary pressure on the shoulders of a 17 year old lad.

If it affects him in that way, he doesn't have the mentality required to make it here. Which I completely disagree with. I think he'll be buzzing and will only see it as "more game time for me!". Hope he hits the ground running, I really do - such an exciting player to watch.

Leadership at this level is all about installing confidence inside the group. Create a we against them attitude and get all players on the same page. Saying the right thing in a press conference will convince the followers but neutrals or those who’re skeptical want more then just nice meaningless words.

I don’t blame him but it’s clear as daylight that there are discrepancies between his positive “mantra” and the reality. Results is only thing that can save him because you can only go so far with just positivity.

Don't get me wrong, Greenwoood is the most exciting prospect to come out of the academy in decades, but he is still a baby. He comes across as a well adjusted lad though, so hopefully he takes the increasing pressure in his stride.

There is money available when the right players are available.

Personally, I didn't agree with the timing of his appointment and have doubts about his ability as a manager but the people writing off the season already are unhinged. Yes, if we start badly, Ole will be under huge pressure but at least let it happen first.

Whatever reservations you might have, surely he deserves that?

100%. What I said there is based purely on a hypothetical scenario where things go badly tits up. I obviously hope that doesn't happen and am cautiously optimistic it won't.
 
It's actually not remotely difficult to put pressure on the board (and shift blame upwards) while at the same time not alienating all of the playing squad.

Ole playing the nodding yes man will bite him in the arse if/when the shit hits the fan and we realise we're miles away from being a top four team. He's somewhat made his bed by cosying up to Ed and going along with the propaganda machine this summer.

Mourinho was absolutely right about the idiocy at board level. He just went about like it an idiot himself, denigrating all the players at the same time as the board.

How, exactly?

If the shit really does hit the fan, there will be a chunk of fans out for his head no matter what he says now. Meanwhile, making even veiled hints that he doesn't rate his squad - or didn't get the additions he wants/needs - serves no purpose other than trying to deflect external criticism away from his own performance and undermining the self-belief of the team.

Obviously, if he really thinks Woodward has dumped him in the shit he should tell him to his face. Playing that conflict out in public would be a shitty move, straight out of the Mourinho copybook, motivate more by ego than any kind of desire to improve the club.

It's crazy isn't it. We all sat here last season around the same time lamenting and shell shocked at the way Jose was treating his players and his public moans which attracted constant negativity before the season had even started.

Yet here we are with a manager who seems to have common sense and knows that any team would need as much positivity as it can get before starting its campaign. The manage fairly diplomatic answers and rightly talked up the players he has at his disposition yet you still have people moaning and finding negative in what he did.

It's like some sort of sickness some blocks have. If they haven't moaned they'll find a reason to.

From a managers point of view, there is literally NOTHING to be gained from criticising the players that we have in public

I believe that tactic may work from time-to-time in an elite squad which is consistently challenging for trophies. You might, for example, eke an extra 5% out of a key player by challenging them publicly. Fundamentally you've identified a player who is not quite fulfilling their potential and are trying to get a reaction

Unfortunately, in more average/middling squads, surely the point is to make them believe that they can achieve more than their natural ceiling may allow. We know some of these players aren't world-beaters but I see little to be gained by telling them that every day, if they are already operating at their ceiling

I honestly cant stand the majority of fans at the moment, and im aware that in reality its just the ones that shout the loudest but I really hoped most of the plastics would die off however it seems that they just got grumpy and whingy.

We've had seasons of no strategy style transfer windows just buying whatever expensive shit was available and as a result we have this weird frankenstein team that cant compete. We have played it pretty tight this summer but the players we have signed have been upgrades in some way or another be it right player for the position or right mentality. This is exactly what we need to get back on track in the real world,
 
Jeez the overreaction here is crazy. What do people want him to say, " our squad is crap and we will finish outside top 6".

Criticizing the players - yes. Criticizing the owners - no.

Pochettino has called for more backing from Levy this window - didn't insult the players.

Benitez at Newcastle made it clear he wanted more backing - was loved by the players.

Conte at Chelsea wanted more backing - didn't insult the players in doing so.

Ole could easily have gently applied pressure to the Glazers this transfer window - instead he did nothing and sat grinning. Fair enough, but he now must make the best of what he's accepted, he has no excuses as he did nothing at all to apply pressure to the board.

What were they gonna do - fire him? He's literally just been given his contract.

He easily could have chipped in a comment like, "the players we have here are great, and I want to add even more quality to that team - but I'm not in charge of signing players". Which is basically what Pochettino did (and then got backed).

Ole is obviously either happy with what he's got (which is still a very decent squad), or is basically a Woodward yes-man.

Hopefully it's the former.

Ole doesn't have the power, nor the stature, of any of those managers. Like it or not, he needs to prove himself. His energy should be spent on the upcoming match. No matter what he says he can't do a thing about the ownership, so why should he get into conflict before our first game?
 
I was happy to hear about Mason. I think those comments have been glossed over because of whether or not Ole should have stuck it to Woodward.

Yep, that’s the answer. The reason why we finished 6th last year and haven’t mounted a title challenge in 6 years, isn’t the personnel and the appalling running of the club...it’s negative threads on Redcafe.

Yea caretaker manager who probably became permanent after his hot start in their minds, hell he even said that he was planning our pre season 5 weeks before they made it official. Sure they just extended contracts to Young and Jones without even consulting him, asking for his input. Dunno which scenario paints worse.
 
The best aspect of this press conference is hearing how much Greenwood may feature.

Many users consider the caf a public forum because it exists in the public domain; however, it is a privately owned forum and the owner and modmins can ban users as they see fit. I just wanted to clarify that for you.
