Solskjær press conference vs Palace (A)

Could be something like:

DDG

Young
Smalling
Lindelof
Shaw

McTominay
Fred
Pogba

Pereira
Sanchez
Lukaku

Bench: Gomes, Rashford, Garner, Dalot, Romero, Bailly, Chong

Which is not really bad if you consider that Jones, Rojo, Matic, Herrera, Darmian, Valencia, Mata, Martial, Lingard, Greenwood and Rashford are all out or doubtful.

Solskjaer praises Gomes, Chong and Garner
They’ve been part of our training for a long time now and I’m sure Angel has been successful with England’s under-17s, the 2017 team with Sancho, Foden and Hudson-Odoi, so he’s been a big part of that. I’m definitely sure that if he gets a chance he’ll do well.

.

He name dropped Sancho, it's ONNNN :drool:

3-3-2-2
Bailly - Smalling - Lindelof
Dalot - McTominay - Shaw
Pereira - Pogba
Lukaku - Sanchez

Though I'd hate to see it and much rather see us go more attacking and take a risk with a youngster.

4-3-3
Young - Smalling - Lindelof - Shaw
Pereira - McTominay - Pogba
Chong - Lukaku - Sanchez

Starting Young because otherwise the right flank would be completely devoid of any experience. Pereira starting because Ole seems to prefer him to Fred atm.

Ole saying all the right things, and given how much time he spent as a sub I can see how he's looking at the opportunity aspect for some of the players even though he's obviously not happy that he's missing so many key starters.

Does anyone think if fit, Jones might be in with an involvement in midfield?
De Gea

Dalot Smalling Lindelöf Shaw

--------------Jones-----------

---McTominay-----Perreira

-------------Pogba----------

-------Lukaku----Sanchez---

Could work!

The 2 teams I Think look ok: 4-4-2

DDG - Shaw, Smalling, VNL, Dalot - McTominay, Perreira, Pogba - Young, Lukaku, Rashford (if he can play) or if Rashford can't play: McTominay, Fred, Pogba - Young, Lukaku, Perreira

or my personal favourite: 3-5-2

DDG - Bailly, VNL, Smalling - Shaw, McTominay, Perreira, Pogba, Young - Lukaku and Sanchez

If this was Southampton at home - I would start with Gomes or Chong, but against Palace away I prefer a bit of experience in the situation we are in.

And for Gods sake - with Pogba and Lukaku on the pitch - get crosses into the box.

I can see Young getting pushed up onto the wing, maybe:

De Gea

Dalot
Smalling
Lindelof
Shaw

Perreira
McTominay
Pogba

Sanchez

Lukaku
Young

I don't see Sanchez getting any joy on the wing against their young right back, who seems a bit of an athlete, so stick Young out on the left with Sanchez playing at the head of the diamond. I know Young isn't exactly a beast himself, but he's smart enough to know how to best deal with a young RB. Sanchez would just carry on trying to play his game and dribble past him which won't work, so best to stick him in the middle.

Imagine being injured as much as Jones but somehow managing to be ill when you're not

Perhaps if he'd have signed him, not inherited him there would be some pressing questions.

The press have taken less that 6 weeks to learn that they will not force a "click-bait" answer out of Ole. So leading questions that would have normally been levelled at Jose for fun have been binned in lieu of actually football insights. Solskær, the gift that just keeps giving!

I take the point there's no need for wind-up bullshit, but surely there's a legitimate question to ask as to his situation? McTominay, Andreas and now the likes of Gomez, Chong and Greenwood coming into the frame ahead of him in the midst of an injury crisis is notable at the very least.

Chong and Gomes either should play. I dont trust Sanchez and Rom to grab goals for us nowadays.

But you trust 2 kids who’ve never played a full 90 over 2 seniors who have a bucket load of goals at international level.

Nice logic

We need to get that top 4 position in the table. Ole has the most trickiest time of his time as interim/caretaker manager of the club. He needs to manage the best players well and give the academy graduates a chance to flourish. We need to bring back Fosu Mensah and Axel Tuanxebe back. We also need to play the formation best suited for the players on the pitch. Beating Crystal Palace and Southampton is going to be a huge challenge for us now. I still think we have a great chance judging by the way he has set up the team all these days. I think he will still play attacking football with pace and creativity.

The latest on Phil Jones
Phil was ill one of these days, so he’s been out for a little while as well with an illness. Luckily at centre-back there are quite a few fit ones, Bailly, Smalling and Lindelof, the three of them are ready.

A celebratory lay-off after getting his new contract, no doubt. Other players celebrate by upping their form, but Phil Jones gonna Phil Jones.

The only scenario that makes sense for me is the press have been told to not ask questions about Fred. It makes no sense otherwise, this is a player we spent £50m on in the summer and you’re telling me the press wouldn’t want to make a story out of it?

Does anyone know if he’s even training with the first team?

Another brilliant, responsible presser. Imagine the state of the responses under the previous twat in charge.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Maybe some personal issues although he has been on the bench.

They would be definitely all over that, they were earlier this season.

Considering all injuries, OGS only has two options:
1) start at least one of the youngsters
2) start Fred
Yeah, thought maybe the flat diamond... McT at the back, either Pereira or Pogba at the tip. Sanchez and Lukaku split strikers.

Or....... Ole falls asleep watching re-runs of the 1999 season and wakes up and says "feck it, 442".

,.....,.......... De Gea

Dalot - Smalling - Lindelof - Shaw

Young - Fred - McTominay - Pogba

.......... Lukaku - Sanchez

May be there is a question about Fred in the embargoed part. We'll have to wait and see.

PS: Was there an Ingrid sighting today?

What on earth can have possessed Dead Woodward to believe Jones was worth another long contract. Beggars belief.

Better to start Gomes than Chong. He is a cousin of Nani still...

Would you rather he went on a free?

One, he’s still young enough to command a decent fee.

Secondly given our injury crisis, makes sense to make the player feel valued

Ole gives me belief. Looking forward to Palace if only to see the kids who will more likely than not be getting their chance.

Secondly given our injury crisis, makes sense to make the player feel valued

Firstly, Jones is now 27.He should be approaching his peak years but every season he's regularly injured and unable to make a telling contribution. We let Evans, a better defender but equally injury prone, go to West Bromwich Albion at the same age. Given the most WBA have ever paid is, I think, around £15 million, I doubt they paid anywhere near that for Evans. Reports suggested around £6 million. Even if Jones is only being paid £50k a week, (most probably much more) that's still £13 Million over five years for a player who shows little sign of progress and is not physically robust. Depends on what you believe is a decent fee set against the cost in wages etc of a player who adds little value to the squad I guess. I doubt there would be many clubs prepared to pay top dollar for him.

Second, Jones new contract predated the current injury crisis. Unsurprisingly, he is not available for selection tomorrow. As usual, he's part of the crisis, not a solution. So keeping him happy hasn't really been any tangible benefit.

Woodward boasts about United doing things in the transfer market other clubs can only dream about. We'll IF we can, crack on and do it Ed because it's not being demonstrated by keeping the likes of Jones and Rojo here. I understand the argument about getting a fee but feel that, realistically, we'd be better off cutting our losses.

Looks like the bench for Rashford, and the three youngsters. In an ideal world we could pick up a two goal lead allowing us to rest Marcus and give Gomes and Chong a couple of minutes to see it out. If we are still chasing the game with 20 minutes to go he'll probably gamble on Rashford.

After Saturday I'm in no doubt he believes in younger players and doesn't mind playing them. Don't expect any of the youth players to start but think they will feature.

On what Fred has to do to get a look-in
Play well when he gets a chance. Keep training, keep working. We’ve had a midfield three of Herrera, Pogba and Matic, and they’ve done really well together.

It’s not like we've been really bogged down with too many games. That's why we’ve kept them three together. McTominay was the obvious choice against Liverpool because he’s an academy kid. We had five academy kids on the pitch at one point. He knows what it means.

Fred will get his chances - maybe tomorrow.

You look more at the time it needs sometimes to settle. You see Seba Veron, he’s one of the best I played with, it took him time to settle in England. I'm sure that Fred, when he gets the chance, he will grab the opportunity.

On top 4 climax
It’ll be exciting. We’ve got Chelsea at home and Arsenal away. Tottenham play at Chelsea on Wednesday. There will be so many games that in the end matter, because I don’t think there’ll be many points in it between 4th, 5th and 6th.

Neither will it be between 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
