Southend v Manchester United - Tuesday, 07 November 2006

No doubt that the Sun will be printing a extra paper tomorrow about the Southend "heroes"

Thank feck for that!

With a tiny squad this season, we can do without all the pointless micky mouse cup fixtures.

FFS. Not that the Carling Cup is our biggest aim for the season but that's not good enough for the team we had out.

This cup has only some grace when we win it. Otherwise it is meaningless cup, like this season for crappy team to win it. So maybe Liverpool.

Well I'm not too upset. We should have went out of this competition in the last round.

Like I said before, we just don't have a big enough squad to compete in all competitions. Winning just the CC this season was never going to be success this season when we've had a taste of leading the league.

The match just proves again our lack of squad depth, something we are all aware of after the Copenhagen game.

Smith and Heinze are nowhere near back to being the players they were before their long injuries. Richardson and Silvestre have shown nothing to suggest they are first team players.
Fletcher was surprisingly poor given that he has started this season quite well.

I thought one or two players like Fletcher and Rooney were not up for this match as much as they could be. It could be an element of thinking the CC is beneath them now they seem to be in a title race.

I'm afraid Jones is not going to be a first team player for us. He's OK but he's just not the level it takes to be a regular for United.

As for Southend, the got a great FK and their keeper made some great saves. You've got to wonder why they are struggling in their league if they can compete like that.

As long as we beat Blackburn, this game will be forgotten quickly.

Excellent!

I almost hit the ceiling.

Thank feck we are out of this tinpot competition and don't have to worry about it again.

Brilliant night, I'm so delighted.

And yes Marching.

Whenever we have done well, we've never won this tinpot.

Some of you are upset? :wenger:

It's a worthless piece of shite. Totally pointless.

Watford leading, at least barcodes could join us in going out.

I can understand people being happy we are out, but my god, that display was insipid to say the best. 21st year in charge and I doubt SAF has witnessed a more pathetic effort from the team he put out. Its like they all forgot how to pass a ball. I mean, its the most basic fecking skill a footballer should have and they all forgot how to do it.

Still, I look on the bright side. That was a 95 minute advert for why Kieran Richardson isn't good enough for the 1st team.

totally agree.

Its a good workout for the likes of Rossi, Pique, Martin, Bardsley etc. But since they are all out on loan its pointless to risk our top players. Would have surely affected our league form. Thank feck its over.

I agree with Weaste. But it's a bit worrying when the squad players lose 2 matches in a row against teams that are Championship quality.

Red Issue have never been so full of cnuts like today:lol:

Nah, we played like that with our first choice 11 at times in the last couple of years.

I'm grateful those sort of displays are now the province of the reserve team.

oh well Southend deserved their win and good luck to them.

All is not lost tonight though as Britney is divorcing K-fed and all will be good in the world soonish ;)

crap performances the last 2 away games, we have to stop this rot.

But we just have to forget this and move on, we got bigger fish to fry.

I believe I'm allowed to overreact at the moment :D. I may well calm down in an hour or so, but I'm going to bed with that insipid wank on my mind and I ain't happy.

I blame the Jews.

Is Richardson circumcised?

Don't know, but Weastie apparently insn't. Incidently, I heard his ancestors' name was Richardstein, but don't quote me on that.

Agree with some of the posters here. As disappointing as it is to lose to Southend with the team that was out there, we just did not have the squad to challenge on all 4 fronts. I'm glad the FA Cup only begines once the UCL is on a break, otherwise we'd have been screwed. We need out first XI to get as much rest between games as possible, so having the League Cup during the midweek is something I can live without.

............ still i hope we will win everything ........... not to much to ask isn't?

I think you should all rememeber that this cup you are now putting down is the only thing you have won in the past couple of years.

Lifelong Manchester United fan Freddy Eastwood ruined Sir Alex Ferguson's 20th anniversary celebrations by sending the Carling Cup holders tumbling out of this season's competition.

The Southend striker, who twice attended Sir Bobby Charlton's famed soccer schools as a youngster, struck the decisive blow with a superb free-kick midway through the first half.

The goal proved enough to earn the Shrimpers one of the most famous nights in their entire history against a Red Devils line-up containing 10 full internationals, including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the real hero of the night was Southend keeper Darryl Flahavan, who produced a hat-trick of stupendous saves, all of which denied Ronaldo who, just like Rooney, tried his heart out but could not prevent Southend recording a shock win that took them into the last eight for the first time in their history.

It was a serious jolt for Ferguson, who only 24 hours ago celebrated an amazing two decades at the Old Trafford helm.

Throughout the past week, Ferguson has attempted to deflect all the praise and plaudits for his amazing achievements at Old Trafford by insisting he was more concerned with the future than the past. :)

As such, and given they had come so close to humiliation at Crewe in the previous round, it was no real surprise to see Rooney and Ronaldo in the Scot's starting line-up as the Red Devils looked to book a quarter-final place for the third time in four years.

Although precisely 43 league places separated the Premiership leaders from the Championship basement boys, a strong start from the hosts could also have been anticipated. Ferguson though presumably did not expect it to last the entire length of the first half.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce was the initial worry, darting down the right flank with menace while not quite managing to find a clinical final ball.

But it was Eastwood who soon took centre stage, showing the talent which persuaded Derby to bid £1million for his services in the summer.

When David Jones chopped Campbell-Ryce down 25 yards out, it was Eastwood who sent the free-kick searing into the top corner beyond the grasp of Tomasz Kuszczak.

It was Eastwood's 10th goal of a stellar season and a capacity crowd, who have not seen their team record a league win since mid-August, erupted, sensing a shock of seismic proportions, caring not a jot this is supposed to be the secondary domestic cup competition, and very much fourth on United's list of priorities.

Jones came agonisingly close to snatching an immediate leveller when his skidding left-footed shock clipped the base of a post with Shrimpers keeper Darryl Flahavan beaten.

Flahavan had dealt comfortable enough with United's sporadic goal threat, most of which came through Rooney, but the fingertip save he produced to deny Ronaldo's instinctive 25-yard drive was world class.

Ferguson felt sufficiently concerned to forgo his seat in the directors' box to make his way down to the visitors dugout and it was not long before he was involved in a heated exchange with the fourth official, although the precise nature of his complaint was unknown.

If Flahavan had been relatively inactive before the interval, he made up for it at the start of the second half as his personal duel with Ronaldo stepped up a notch.

First, the Portugal winger tried his luck with a snapshot which Flahavan managed to push away.

Then Ronaldo let fly with the type of stinging free-kick which has become his trademark this season but, again, the Southend keeper was equal to the task.

United laid siege to the Southend goal for the final 20 minutes but too often Rooney and Ronaldo tried to force a way through on their own and the visitors, marshalled superbly by Spencer Prior, a League Cup winner from his Leicester days, were able to keep them at bay.

The nearest the Red Devils came to an equaliser was through Gabriel Heinze, whose 20-yard shot seemed destined for the corner of Flahavan's goal but instead flew just wide of his left-hand post.

Sir Alex Ferguson insists United will respond in the right manner after their shock Carling Cup exit at Southend.

Not for the first time in his 20 years at Old Trafford, the manager will have to keep his head while all those around him - in the press, at least - lose theirs. He will shun the inevitable calls for players to be axed, even exiled, and concentrate on preparing his Premiership leaders for the pursuit of a sixth consecutive league win.

"We are disappointed because our club can’t accept being beaten in any kind of competition, even a friendly, because of the expectation level," conceded Sir Alex at Southend. :(

"But I know that tomorrow we can get our togs on and start working again because that’s the name of the game at this club. Not to look back but look forward.

"We’ve had a disappointment but there’ll be no knee-jerk reaction, no mass sackings or suicides I hope, but a lot of recriminations.

"We’ll get panned in the press but by doing that you’re taking away from the performance that Southend gave.

"I think we started a bit slack and they got some impetus from that. The goal they scored was incredible, it was fantastic. I don’t think the boy (Fredy Eastwood) will score another one like it in his lifetime.

"If you’re going to be beaten, it’s better to be beaten by something special. I think it was something special."

Cristiano Ronaldo - described by Sir Alex as "our one player who really did play well tonight" - made several attempts to score a special goal himself, only to be denied by the acrobatics of Southend shot-stopper Darryl Flahavan.

"He’s had four or five fantastic strikes at goal and the goalkeeper’s been magnificent. I thought he was the star man, I must say," praised Sir Alex.

"The longer it went on, the more frustrated we became. But towards the last fifteen or twenty minutes, they were just parked at the edge of their box and we found that difficult.

"The result is another great reminder of what football is all about and how it can smack you in the face. There’ll be a few players who are a bit embarrassed and our supporters will be disappointed.

"But defeat doesn’t do anyone any harm, as long as they can improve from it and learn by it. We’ve had three defeats this season, all one-nils, so there’s not a lot wrong and we’ll be ready for Saturday."

United crashed out of the Carling Cup against Championship strugglers Southend United after a frustrating evening at Roots Hall.

Freddy Eastwood's superb free-kick was enough for the Shrimpers, who were indebted to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Darryl Flavahan.

The hosts were good value for their win despite forging few scoring opportunities, having defended heroically throughout the 90 minutes.

Mindful of the hard work his inexperienced side had made of negotiating Crewe Alexandra in the third round, Sir Alex Ferguson named a stronger side for the trip to Roots Hall.

In came, most notably, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo as Sir Alex showed his desire to make a successful defence of the trophy procured against Wigan Athletic last February.

For all their reinforcements, however, it was again the underdogs who started the tie in finer fettle and captain Wes Brown had to be alert to block Eastwood's fourth-minute shot.

United gradually grew into the game and Rooney was only fractionally away from reaching Gabriel Heinze's fine deep cross after 10 minutes.

The England striker showed a flash of magic eight minutes later to out manouevre Spencer Prior with a clever flick, but he scuffed his shot straight to Flahavan.

The hosts continued to give as good as they got, and it was far from against the run of play when Eastwood fired them ahead after 26 minutes.

His 30-yard free kick flew brilliantly into the top corner of Tomasz Kuszczak's goal to delight the home crowd, who had seen their side go 12 games without a win hitherto.

United almost drew level within a minute as David Jones saw his snapshot cannon off the inside of the post and away to safety. In the end, that would prove the closest scare for the hosts.

With a lead against their more illustrious opponents, Southend became content to sit back and counter attack wherever possible, and Kuszczak did well to thwart Eastwood again by pipping the striker to a long through-ball. :(

United began to apply more and more pressure in the latter stages of the half, with Flahavan called upon to keep out Ronaldo's long-range drive, while Richardson fired wastefully wide.

Southend held out until the interval with their lead intact, and the pressure they had endured in the latter stages of the first 45 minutes was merely a taster for what was to come after the break.

The second period became little more than a case of Flahavan denying United's every meaningful attempt, with the outstanding Ronaldo left particularly frustrated.

He saw one volley trickle wide before the Shrimpers keeper pulled out two fine saves to prevent an equaliser, in particular from a scorching 25-yard free kick.

Just after the hour mark he reacted equally well to claw John O'Shea's mishit cross from underneath the crossbar, before holding onto Darren Fletcher's long-range effort.

Heinze fired just wide from 20 yards before both Eastwood and Efe Sodje wasted decent openings to add further gloss to the glory of the scoreline.

Ryan Shawcross and Kieran Lee entered the fray from the sidelines as Sir Alex aimed to freshen up his toiling side.

Despite a couple of late scrambles the Shrimpers held firm to register a famous, deserved win against an off-colour United side.

Southend United: Flahavan, Clarke, Prior, Hunt (Francis, 14), Sodje, Hammell, Hooper (Lawson, 67), Campbell-Ryce, Gower, Maher, Eastwood.
Subs not used: Moussa, Wilson, Cole.

United: Kuszczak, O'Shea (Lee, 74), Brown, Silvestre, Heinze, Richardson, D Jones (Shawcross, 90), Fletcher, Ronaldo, Rooney, Smith (Evra, 60).
Subs not used: Heaton, Rose.

"We are disappointed because our club can’t accept being beaten in any kind of competition, even a friendly, because of the expectation level," conceded Sir Alex at Southend.

My thoughts exactly.I bet the renties won't be taking this competition likely.
