The background staff

Not expecting any major changes. Moyes will need the likes of Rene to help ease him into the job. We have world class coaches, why to change?

As i said in the captain thread, continuity was one of the major reasons he got the job. There wont be any wholesale changes. Quite unlike bringing in a foreign manager.

Moyes has been given the privilege to manage United - he needs to justify that faith placed in him...so I'd want him to come without ANY Everton staff, coaching or playing.
SAF always talks about United's non-playing staff, and it's not like we have been fighting relegation every season is it?
Meulensteen is too valuable an asset to lose...

I doubt there'll be any major overhaul. I'd be amazed if Meulensteen, in particular, was demoted/let go.

However, Moyes should be entitled to bring his own men in. The same way Ferguson was. If that's Steve Round, David Weir, Phil Neville or whoever else, then so be it.

I think Phelan might go. Moyes would be smart to keep the majority of the backroom team as there is one of the best set ups in the world here. But he has to make some changes. He can't just come in with all of Fergies staff and Fergie just moved upstairs. In my opinion he'll bring in his own assistant.

He needs to keep the general structure the same and he needs to keep Rene.

Moyes would be daft to disrupt a clearly successful backroom team.

ofcourse Rene will stay. Why do you all think Moyes is daft?

In terms of our staff I have 2 wishes, and that's it.

1) Keep Rene at all costs
2) Get rid of Phelan

Eric Steele wouldn't get the boot would he? I admire the work he's done with De Gea, both from a practical point of view and a psychological one.

Meulensteen and Steele to stay for sure.

Maybe Phelan to go - and I'm not just saying that because of the fact he's picked on on this board. Purely because Moyes may want his own no. 2 which I would understand.

I think he should get his own assistant but keep the majority of the staff in place.

I agree that Meulensteen and Steele must stay, but I don't know enough (anything) about the rest of the staff to make a judgement.

You'd think Moyes will bring at least one person in with him though.

Why do you want rid of Phelan?

well, for one I think Moyes should have an assistant coach that he feels most comfortable with, and I doubt that's Phelan.

second, he's hardly a tactical genius of any kind, we faired much better tacticaly (especialy in Europe) when Queiroz was Fergie's #2, and honestly, although I can't know what exactly he did he never seemed like anything more than a "yes man" for Fergie, never seemed to have much input in things and for me doesn't bring much to the table.
Most of the time when Fergie was thinking of changing game tactics he'd spend time talking to Rene, Phelan was basicaly the guy to talk on the touchline and yell out orders given to him.

We're really being unfair to Phelan. Not being Scottish, he will have some endearing qualities to get the number 2 job.

Phelan will be the new Fred the Red

Maybe Phelan wasn't the perfect foil for Ferguson. That doesn't mean he won't be one for Moyes.

But I do expect the new manager to bring a couple of his own people. I think adjusting to working with a staff who are all Fergie's people will surely be hard. You'd always wonder what they think of how you're doing.

Phelan still has a place at old trafford. I'm not sure where his place is mind

What makes you think that we've got that? I am not questioning their ability. For all I know they could have been the best background staff the world have ever seen. However its difficult to judge their value considering that we were lead by an absolute genius. Let us not forget that many of those who left the club had failed to do an impact elsewhere. This include the highly rated Queroz and Rene.

A new manager had come in and while he have a similar agenda to SAF (ie regarding youth academy and winning), his needs are somehow different. SAF needed legs on the pitch whom he could delegate the dirty work, Moyes may need more experienced heads or at least people with great tactical knowledge who can give him ideas and challenge him on the best strategy to use.

He may also assess the quality coming out of the youth academy and ask why we haven't produced 1 WC talent in more then a decade. Our youth academy had produced alot of good players in the past few years, however we havent produced 1 special talent ever since the likes of Paul Scholes burst into scene. Moyes may wonder why this had occur, expecially when Everton were able to produce a talent like Wayne Rooney despite their evident limitations

Reports apparently that Phelan will be leaving. Also possibly Albert Morgan, though I'm not sure you'll call him backroom staff!

Albert is part of the furniture here though. Sky showed Cristiano gave him a massive hug when he arrived at Old Trafford in March. Too much unnecessary change is slightly concerning.

If Phelan goes, we riot.

Dont think Morgan will go unless he decides he wants too, he is the kitman after all, why would Moyes need his official everton kitman :wenger:

I think the club made it pretty clear the club will stay the same, but he may be able to bring a few coaches/personal in that he would want.

Phelan may be relegated back to a coach if Moyes wants a new number 2, but I dont think he will be cut off, he has been at the club a long time.

It always made sense that Moyes would like his own number 2 and even if he wants Phelan in his staff, it would be a demotion.

Moyes has to bring in some of his own people. Even if they're not a step up in quality, it's about stamping your mark on the club and getting in people who have your back. Some folks are setting him up to be a SAF clone. He needs to be his own man.

I saw on one of the tweets being posted on the BBC sportsday feed during Tuesday or Wednesday from one of the journalists that Moyes had been given a Plus 1 card in terms of backroom staff. I only saw one person say this and nothing from elsewhere since to back it up, but it wouldn't be a big shock would it to see him being given something like that.

It would make sense and as Martin Ferguson is going as well, he'll possibly be given the opportunity to bring in a new head scout or a new scout and promote from within.

I think Phelan will seek a manager's job somewhere in the Championship.
