At one point in the film, the lawyer for Ms. Liebeck is deposing a quality control executive with McDonald’s. The attorney for Ms. Liebeck first asks this gentleman whether he would suggest that people should consume coffee when it’s 180-190 degrees. He brazenly states that no one should even think about drinking coffee when it’s that hot because it could cause terrible burns to the throat. Next, he is asked how he feels about the hundreds and hundreds of burn incidents that have taken place due to McDonald’s extremely hot coffee. Incredibly he declares that he is proud of those numbers, because he thought they would actually be much higher.

During the trial it was revealed that McDonald’s knew that heating their coffee to this temperature would be dangerous, but they did it anyways because it would save them money. When you serve coffee that is too hot to drink, it will take much longer for a person to drink their coffee, which means that McDonald’s will not have to give out as many free refills of coffee. This policy by the fast food chain is the reason the jury awarded $2.7 million dollars in punitive damages in the McDonald's hot coffee case. Punitive damages are meant to punish the defendant for their inappropriate business practice.

Liebeck was taken to the hospital after the incident, where it was determined that she had suffered third-degree burns on 6% of her skin and lesser burns over 16%. It is easy enough to find photographs of the burns to Ms. Liebeck’s legs and groin area online, but I must warn you that these photographs are graphic and are not for the weak of heart.

She remained in the hospital for eight days while she underwent skin grafting. During this period, Liebeck lost 20 pounds (nearly 20% of her body weight), reducing her to 83 pounds. Two years of medical treatment followed this terrible ordeal.

Nah - you take a risk when you do things like that. If you're going to do something like that and hundreds of thousands of people (millions?) have been fine something else is going on. Freak accidents happen all the time. The disclaimer culture in this country is off the chain. It's refreshing to travel the world and not see populations that need to be babied bc they might hurt themselves and sue.

Disagree. It is a businesses responsibility to ensure that it’s product, when used as directed (and known dangers are published), is safe. If a customer is injured the business should cover medical costs. If it was willful negligence (like with McDonalds coffee) then there should be punitive damages.

Are there frivolous lawsuits? Of course, but the public perception that millions of people are trying to extort money from poor, innocent businesses is not an accident. Vast sums of money are spent to discourage injured parties from suing. Even the language here is manufactured, almost certainly by Disney legal/PR, to minimize her injuries. By calling it a “wedgie” it equates it to a childish prank.

I didn't know that either, but coffee is supposed to be hot and even if you make it yourself and spill it over yourself you're gonna get burnt, next it'll be someone suing because a Big Mac made them fat!

Coffee and other hot drinks should be served at 160 degrees max. Even then most people can't drink them right away. McDonald's was serving it to customers at 180-190 degrees, way too hot and very dangerous if you spill it on yourself. That they did this to save money made it even more despicable.

Yes, but in a food service setting providing hot drinks to customers at such a temperature is dangerous. Flimsy cups and lids increase the potential for spills compared to the relatively stable ceramic mug you likely use with your Keurig..

I read an article of how big companies slanders big lawsuits and mocks the outcome and in the imaginary of people, the coffee lawsuit was a greedy old lady for a tad too hot coffee that did nothing. But it was a serious damage to a poor old lady

Spent many days in the hospital being permanently disfigured and she was disabled for a few years. She asked only for medical expenses to be covered and MCDonalds refused, then escalated and tried to settle several times starting for a few thousands with McDonalds refusing everytime. She won a couple of millions but McDonalds got away reducing the sentence to a fraction of it

So yeah, the coffee lawsuit was pictured conveniently as a greedy consumer suing poor McDonalds and as a representation of the abuse of the consumer to poor big corp. But it was terrible for the consumer and McDonalds was a dick about it

The same on the article calling "big wedgie" to fecking serious injuries and if you are a lazy reader, you will read just the title and think what a greedy asshole suing Disney for a wedgie that is "to be expected", and then you realize that it was serious. It is all rig to favour big Corp and against the consumer

I'd be interested in knowing if the requirement 'keep your legs crossed when going down the slide' was either in print or verbalized by a staff member. The other water slide I mentioned at a different water park would not let you go down the slide until you complied.

If the warning was not clear or verbalized, then feck the water park & go for as much as possible; if it was displayed & / or verbalized, then it gets a little more fuzzy.

I doubt we will know, but regardless I will side with the injured plaintiff as I doubt that they love being injured at this extend and Disney has the money. Having an amusement park is a liability for obvious reasons and that is also why they have insurance. For the consumer is a non wanted life changing experience that might affect her physically and mentally all her life and it might affect her economically due to medical bills in US. For Disney is not even a dent And definitely definitely definitely definitely don't call a big wedgie this kind of injuries to favour public Disney optics. Dicks

The sentence that I always heard is " all the children that god give us" . Meaning that sex has one and only purpose but to bring new souls into the world. That means only to have sex to procreate, no wanks, no birth control, no abortion...and pleasure should be a secondary effect

Somewhat bizarrely, the two involved locations are on the North and South side of town, rather than nearby.
