Television The Caf' Anime Thread

The rating on MAL , is it really that bad?

regarding One Piece I'm nearing the end of Impel Down part 2, amazing arc. the majority of the last 200 or so episodes of this have been brilliant for me, the animations gotten really good too.

I loved Berserk and didn't like anything about this new season.

Sometimes Anime is so disappointingly shit I wish I could just write the fecking thing for 'em.

SMH!

Only makes sense for me to watch things dubbed, if it's a good dub.
When I started anime, I would only watch things dubbed. Then there were a few shows that I wanted to watch that hadn't been dubbed. Since then, I've always gone straight to the subbed version.

Why oh why would anyone watch the dubbed version. Funimation is better than 4kids, but still - the original voice acting is one of the strengths of One Pieace.

As an aside, 4kids censorship was something else:

One Piece dubbed! I'm on the bit where
Luffy with the help of Bon Clay, is seemingly going to fight Magellan for the last time.
I watch some animes dubbed like One Piece, Fairy Tail, My Hero Academia, The Seven Deadly Sins, and others subbed. Like Invictus alluded too, Funimation are very, very good. Although admittedly, there wasn't much thought process with me watching Fairy Tail dubbed, I simply saw episode 1 as a youtube suggesstion, and subsequently watched the next 4 episodes on Youtube, and when I tried to find the 6th episode it was subbed (like the other Fairy Tail episodes past the 5 mark), and just felt like there was no going back.

Watched the first three episodes of My Hero Academia yesterday. The first episode gave me the impression it was some sort of Rock Lee gimmick, with the quirk being a kin to jutsu, but the 2nd and 3rd episode were definitely captivating.

Weirdos. Of all the animes I've seen, One Piece is probably the last one I'd watched dubbed, if I were to be forced to watch one.

I've almost never found the English VAs better than the Japanese. Things like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragonball Z (and any anime I didn't take seriously) did feel more natural in English since I got used to them on air when I was younger.

Yeah I feel those were better in arabic, hunterxhunter as well I saw it on tv as a kid and felt better in arabic.

Dub watchers will definitely miss out on stuff like this:

There's just something really special about the comic timing and delivery in One Piece, or emotionally charged moments that can't be 100% conveyed in English.

I've always been ok with dubs if the anime is not in a Japanese setting. Cowboy Bebop in my opinion makes more sense being in English whereas Samurai Champloo is better in Japanese.

Almost finished watching the 1997 Berserk series, really liking it and has a wonderful soundtrack too, the title song is quite catchy as well, it does get stuck in the head once you think about it. Two episodes to go but the last episode I watched just took a fecked up twist!

Anyone know if the Golden age arc films are worth watching afrterwards or do they just cover the events of the Anime series?

Yeah when it comes to the whole dubbing vs subtitles, i always prefer the original subbed japanese too... just sounds more authentic than the usually dodgy american voiced characters.

On another note, just wondered if anyone has any recomendations on decent Anime, in particularly on Netflix? I've see a lot of the more classic series like Death Note, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Beebop... recently on Netflix i randomly picked Seven Deadly Sins, which i quite enjoyed, but also gave Rwby a go, which was bloody awful :)

So any stars on Netflix lying around inbetween the junk?

Funmation did the One Piece dub amazingly well, all of the voices are pretty much perfect - Luffy's voice especially... or perhaps I'm just really accustomed to them after 470 eps.

It's essentially a condensed version of the anime (Gambino to Eclipse), and a lot of the material has been cut out - so it might not be worth your while. Apart from maybe the end of Arc III: Descent - which gives you some closure after the Eclipse.

It does seem rather fine except for that the Japanese voice actor for Spike has such a cool smooth voice whilst the American one has a more rougher voice that doesn't have as much charm.

They mostly cover the events of the anime except for a few extra minutes at the end, the cgi animation is an eyesore though and they don't have the same somber beauty as the series, much due to the soundtrack not being as distinct.

Attack on Titan, Full Metal Alchemist and Mushishi, judging by a quick google.

Watch the remaining subbed episodes and see what you think, if anything you'll have a glorious subbed rewatch to look forward too.

Finished the entire One Piece dub, not sure if I can make the switch to the subbed version :nervous: will miss the characters too much!
I'm scared of this, too :nervous:

Luckily, I've got a while yet before I'm up to date so I'll enjoy the dub while I can. Or maybe I should switch to the sub now since I'm only 100 eps into it.... The choices, the choices..

The relationship between Guts and Griffith was fantastic, engaging from start to finish. I hadn't expected to like this branch of dark-fantasy but overall it was very enjoyable. Spurred me to pick up the manga recently too. I disliked Casca though.

 I thought exactly the same about 300 episodes ago, and then they flew right by!

:D I think I will stick with the dub because I love the voices too much and they are the characters for me, if you know what I mean? I'm not looking forward to having to change so far into the story but I'll manage...hopefully :p

I'm watching the subbed HxH as well at the moment and with the dub of it coming out I couldn't imagine switching over to it now considering I'm in the middle of the story, and that's as a person who prefers dubs. Being so far into a story and getting to know these characters with all the emotional baggage that comes along with them, it's just strange from going to one language to another.

Abort, abort! Watch a few episodes subbed and you'll never look back. Luffy's japanese voice is so distinctive.

Great, thanks for the tips! I've seen Attack on Titan, but never heard of Mushishi, and never gotten around to Full Metal Alchemist... That'll keep me going for a while!

Definitely check out Attack on Titan

Edit: whoops seems you've seen that already

Yeah I'm exactly the same, thought I'd really miss the characters. I'm a few episodes into the dubbed version now and it hasn't grown on me yet but I'm sure it will.

I tried the HxH dub and didn't know what to think, probably because I watched the subbed version that it just seems so weird to me ^^

Yep, stick with dub. There was only one time where I even considered watching the subbed version, that was when their was a delay with the next 12 or so batch of episodes

 I watched all that even though a lot of the clips were from arcs I'm not upto yet. I'd normally stop if it had something from an arc I wasn't up to yet in fear of spoiling it but I couldn't. It's just so good! I did love that Captain Kuro and his Michael Jackson sidekick, though.

Anyway, I don't mind the subbed version as I have seen some clips from the anime already subbed and thought they were fine. It's just I've grown accustomed to the English speaking crew now. I'm hoping by the time I've caught up, Funi are picking up the pace on catching up themselves, but if not, I think the change of voices won't be as bad for me as the Future Diary transition for the OVA for example.

It's like with Dragonball Super now. I want to watch this whole Future Trunks arc but Goku isn't Goku to me without Sean Schemmel so I'm patiently waiting for the dub. Constantly.....waiting....

This is why I'm pondering the thought of changing now. I'm only 100 eps in and I already love the characters, but 400 or so and it'd be even more painful to switch. I admit, I do like the sound of the Japanese voices and don't think the transition for me would be off putting towards the anime itself, but I love the English ones. So maybe changing now would be for the best, but I'm also on the side of wanting to watch as much of the story in the dub as possible, though that'd make the transition even more strange.

Yeah, but the delay is going to be huge compared to that! I think the dub is 300 or so episodes behind the anime I believe. I don't think, if I binge watch up to the most recent OP dubbed ep, I could wait that long to catch up. Especially when most people will be up to date having been watching the subbed version thus leaving me having to avoid OP topics in fear of spoilers when I'd like to discuss it as well.

Don't even know what I can say, holy shit. One of the best anime episodes ever. The lump in my throat is real :(

Ace :(

There's a remaster of the full series of Berserk up on Youtube here if anyone is interested:

However the bad thing is that it doesn't have the catchy theme tune at the start:

I've heard Bleach (the manga) is ending soon. Does this indicate a TV return?

I loved seasons 1-3, and even the later seasons were decent, there was just so much god damned filler. I hope if they've finished the manga they can adapt the new chapters for TV, which I've heard are really good.

91 Days is a new anime this summer guys. Very good pilot. Get on that shit

Ace :(
Brace yourself, the anime is going to start to get a bit slow now, but yeah best episode ever.

Might just be me, but the most gut-wrenching part wasn't Ace's death. Just wasn't as emotionally invested in the character, when compared with eg.
Itachi - who was more of a 'martyr'.
Mostly because Ace was a bit too cocky and ignored warnings against engaging Teach, and was a real moron in that Sakazuki successfully trolled him, and he immediately took the bait after all Luffy had gone through since Impel Down, and even the White Beard Pirates in general - who risked a major war/yonkou imbalance for him. Which leads to the point I trying to make: Luffy's reaction in Amazon Lily - when Jinbe had to ultimately knock some sense into him, and that Dadan/Makino/Garp scene in Windmill Village was when Ace's death really hit home. Infact, in terms of One Piece characters as stand-alone, Shirohige's death left me with a greater sense of loss.

46 cannonball shots, Sakakuzi blowing his face off, 267 sword wounds, 152 bullet wounds, etc etc. - and he stands tall, even in death and way past his prime. What a man! :(
