Television The Caf' Anime Thread

Just finished season 1 of hero academia and I enjoyed it. Its probably my go to turn your brain off anime(from fairy tail). Nothing too heavy with a very interesting world and premise.

Also the animation is top notch.

I have been watching Dragon Ball Super in the original Japanese subtitled version (only ever watched Z in English) I absolutely loved it

Just started watching Attack On Titan. Hooked already.
Why do I have to work ffs!

I must say that Vagabond is a sensational manga, definitely up there with Berserk, shame it'll probably never get an anime adaptation but I imagine it would get butchered anyway so maybe it's for the best.

An ideal adaptation would have Toru Takemitsu revived from the dead to do the score and the guy who voices Jet Black/Kizaru/the Berserk narrator to voice Takuan Sōhō as I read all his lines in his voice.

For some reason, it seems like I've exhausted all the good anime, and there's nothing left to watch - either that, or my tastes have changed dramatically over time because I feel really out-of-sync with most of the newer generation of shows - without necessarily being fatigued by the medium per se. Wish there was a way for me to selectively erase my memories and revisit some of the ones I liked. Will probably never get to experience the unbridled sense of adventure I felt while following One Piece for the first time, the breathtaking elegance of Mushishi, the intrigue of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, the brooding elegance of Rurouni Kenshin, the eccentricity of Baccano!, the flawed brilliance of Evangelion, the whimsicalness of Barakamon...(>﹏<)

Are there any shows you know of that you haven't seen yet? I started watching Naruto for the first time last week, I've been on the fence about watching it for years and years but I finally managed to convince myself to watch it as it's such an iconic anime, the appearance of Raizou in One Piece helped too...it's been a perfect light anime to binge watch so far.

Probably, yeah. I've seen at least 5 episodes of the vast majority of anime people have suggested to me over the past decade and a half, but a lot of obscure gems must have slipped through the cracks. Finding them is proving to be an uphill task, though. Been wading through a sea of trashy anime over the months before stumbling upon the the odd show that I do like: Kemono no Sōja Erin, Galaxy Express 999, and a couple others. Could really use a thorough and eclectic mix of recommendations. Bit surprised that you haven't watched Naruto - which is like the gateway anime for a significant portion of anime watchers. Reckon it retroactively gets a bad rep. because the final third of the original series was filler, the Shippuden reboot divided opinions, and it went really mainstream - thus losing the counterculture appeal. Plus, Kishimoto's writing nosedived in terms in quality with incessant Talk no Jutsu and numerous arsepulls - which looked especially bad in contrast with the seemingly unabating consistency of Oda in terms of storytelling. But the first 2/3rd of the original series is classic ninja shōnen - especially the Chūnin Exams arc that kicks things into gear, and the Sauceke Retrieval - which signals the end of canon Naruto I.

Watching Parasyte now. Love psychological anime. This one is more direct action as opposed to dark/psychological, but still its' got a good story and some cool battles.

Finished watching Shinsekai Yori a month ago. Actually a couple of years back I had watched 3 episodes and gave up 'cause I didn't know what the feck was going on. This time I persevered and when I got to Episode 14-15 roundabouts, not only was everything explained, but it hurtled at a jaw dropping pace to a twisted wreck of a finale. Mind-bender.

No spoilers, but the ending was just so horrific. Great show, wish they had paced the first few episodes properly, I get the feeling some like me would give up watching initially and if they don't come back, they are missing some terrific stuff.

Some of my faves you may not have seen:

Kaiba
The Tatami Galaxy
Fantastic Children
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Magnetic Rose

My gateway to anime was through serious Sci-Fi. Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell and etc...so, I never watched the three big ones. One Piece was the first one I watched, then Bleach a few years after and now Naruto. One of the reasons I haven't watched it until now was as you said the bad rep I've seen it get in various places.

There's probably hardly any anime series that I've watched that you haven't...did you ever watch Samurai 7? I think it's relatively obscure and I enjoyed it at the time, especially seeing as I'm a fan of the Kurosawa movie.

Seen any of these?
Slam Dunk, GTO, Samurai Champlo, Welcome to NHK, Parasyte, Mob Psycho 100, School Rumble, Dragon Ball, Hajime No Ippo, Shiki, Jormungand, Kuroko No Basket, Overlord, OPM, Erased, Beelzebub, Haikyuu, PingPong, Ballroom e Youkoso

Haven't seen Revolutionary Girl Utena...not a big Shōjo anime watcher, but I'll give it a try.

P.S. Memorizu is really good - all of it - Magnetic Rose is probably the best, but Cannon Fodder and Stink Bomb are also noteworthy. Would definitely recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen the anthology.

Is that the futuristic mecha adaptation of the original film? If so, I've watched it.

Haven't seen Ballroom e Youkoso and Overlord (been putting it off because it came across as a generic RPG vidya anime - not a big fan of the entire genre apart from Accel World, and .hack//Sign from back in the day)...anyhow, couple more for the to-watch list. Cheers, everyone! :)

You'll like it if you're a fan of deconstruction. It's effectively a dark fantasy that plays around with genre cliches. It's quite unique though comparable to Madoka (which is quite obviously an homage to it).

Indeed.

Did you end up watching Re:Zero btw?
Yep! Was quite cliched and gimmicky, but I ended up liking it even though it's a post Sword Art Online RPG themed anime.

Sounds good. Madoka Magica is one of my absolute favorites, so I'll definitely give Revolutionary Girl Utena a go.

Found in box in my parents attic, my vhs’s of Akira, Complete set of Guyver:Bio Booster Armour, Vampire Hunter D, Initial D and Lensman. Going to invest in a VHS player and see if they’re all as good as I remember. Would anyone say that the mid to late 90s anime is superior to the stuff like Death note et al? Or is it my nostalgic mind..

akira - my favourite anime ever alongside death note.

Hope you enjoy it. If I remember correctly it's made up of three separate arcs - the last one being the best. There's a few filler episodes here and there but they centre around different characters, who are mostly really engaging. The whole series is very dreamy (can't think of a better word).

Are you as clued up on anime films as on series?
Dunno, I'd like to think so, yes, or at least the more mainstream ones.

Off the top of my head, I've watched: All of Miyazaki's films or rather Studio Ghibli films in general, Nijiiro Hotaru, Deddo Ribusu, Chie the Brat, Tokyo Godfathers, Vampire Hunter D, Colorful, Venus Wars, Ninja Scroll, Wings of Honneamise, The Garden of Words, Kappa no Coo to Natsuyasumi, The Red Spectacles, Millenium Actress, Tales of Vesperia, Sword of the Stranger, Steamboy, Barefoot Gen, Diebuster, Kimi no na wa, Roujin Z, Wolf Children, Angel's Egg, Voices of a Distant Star, Neo Tokyo, Hotarubi no Mori e, Metropolis, Eve no Jikan, Gatchamen, Summer Wars, Patlabor, Patema Inverted, Origins: Spirits of the Past, The Boy and the Beast, Vexille, Redline, Mai Mai Miracle, 5 Centimeters per Second, Arcadia of My Youth, Cory in the House, Koe no Katachi, Jin Roh, Perfect Blue, Hakujaden, Sky Crawlers, Tree of Palme, Kai Doh Maru, The Girl who Leapt through Time, Urusei Yatsura, Memorizu, Nasu, Paprika, Hana to Alice, Short Peace, Akira, Cencoroll, Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Robot Carnival.

Aside from OVAs of Samurai X, Lupin III, Afro Samurai, Haruhi Suzumiya, Final Fantasy, Evangelion, Conquerors of Shambala, Blood, Macross, Gundam, etc.

One I can't seem to spot is Night on the Galactic Railroad which is a really placid and trippy one.

Some I like that aren’t there: The Dog of Flanders (1997), Tekkon Kinkreet, Mind Game, Miss Hokusai, Giovanni’s Island, A Letter to Momo.

Nice! Haven't seen Tekkon Kinkreet and Miss Hokusai - so they go on the to-watch list as well. :)

Cheers for that. I've always wanted to read at least 7 ongoing manga's, that way I can read a new chapter everyday, as I lack the discipline to avoid the urge of binge reading for completed manga's. The same with anime's really which is why I prefer anime's that are in the hundreds instead of 25, or those that do have 1-25 episodes to at least have more than one season.

Monday - Tower of God
Tuesday - Lookism
Wednesday - DICE
Thursday - Unordinary
Fridary - The Promised Neverland
Satuday - Black Haze
Sunday - Lookism (Used to come out daily, now every Tuesday and Sunday), Tales of Demons and Gods (very short so I read every two weeks)

Mangafox has the status as ongoing but it looks like its on an indefinite hiatus. If that's the case, I think I'll give it a pass for the time being. Conversely, the manga of Hunter X Hunter has picked up some degree of consistency, which means I'll be able to continue with the Hunter X Hunter anime one day. Well, hopefully :(

I'm fairly new to anime. Suggestions, please?

I've seen Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, One Punch Man. That's about it. Oh, and Attack on Titan.
What say ye?

Psychological, horror, action, adventure, anything like that'd do.

Hunter X Hunter is a must, and from what you've watched, you'd probably enjoy One Piece

I think I replied to you the other day but by the looks of that I'd say you've seen pretty much most of the good stuff. Lately I've been using this list for movies. Dude has some good taste - and he's right because anime won't dump you by SMS.

It's taking ages for me to finish Vagabond as I usually binge read manga when I'm working night shifts, so maybe once a week. Maybe you could work out a similar system when to read it?

For psychological horror, watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.

For action adventure, watch One Piece.

Hmmm my biggest reason for being apprehensive being the last chapter was released 2 years ago.

You should try 'Made in Abyss', the anime has this nostalgic feeling that I think should appeal to older generations, at least I'm really into it although the current season is coming to an end and it feels too short.

There should be a new season of Onepunch Man and Attack on Titan next year I think.

Those are very common anime so you would probably like Full Metal Alchemist. There are two versions though, both are very good and of the same quality I'd say; Full Metal Alchemist was the first anime and then they made Full Metal Alchemist: Brootherhood. The difference is that Brotherhood follows the story of the manga, and the first version is a different story but they have more or less the same feeling to it.

You could also do with something like Samurai X.

Off the top of my head... Code Geass, Another, Black Lagoon, Tokyo Ghoul, Death Note, Elfen Lied, Steinsgate, Pyscho Pass, Re:Zero

Can't go wrong with most of those really.

If you like themes that explore the darkness within society, grapple with the questions surrounding morality and in general, want to see how depraved humanity (or whatever species the anime uses as an example) can get, with a generous amount of violence at times, I'd recommend the following in this order:

1) Shiki
2) Madoka Magica (note, first 3 episodes look kiddish...wait till the end of the 3rd to see the startling route this anime takes)
3) Elfen Lied
4) Shinsekai Yori (First 7 episodes are boring and utterly confusing, if you get past these, you will be rewarded with a horrific story that keeps you hooked.)
5) Death Note (till the L arc, after that it gets boring)
6) Perfect Blue (This one inspired Aranofsky's Black Swan, pretty surreal)
7) Psychopass (only season 1, the second season was by a different writer and sucks)
8) Neon Genesis Evangelion
9) Higurashi (first season only)
10) Parasyte (Just finished watching myself...fairly interesting)
11) Le Portrait de Petit Cossette
12) Hellsing
13) Deadman Wonderland (absolutely awesome story, but the anime is not complete. I am not even a manga reader, but I had to read the manga to finish the story).

1-4 is brilliant. 5-6 is very good. 7-9 is good. 10-13 is average.
