This current United side for better or worse has a massive stamp of Van Gaal all over it. From trusted former players like the second choice keeper Sergio Romero and Bastian Schweinsteiger and players who tend to always get a game like Fellaini. If Mourinho takes over, there's probably going to be a drastic change in the who ethos of the club.

Who do you reckon will be done at United? Who do you think will see a massive upturn in fortune? Players like Herrera and Memphis will be interesting next year for me. Maybe a new philosohpy (ugh) could bring out the very best in those two. Mata on the other hand you'd imagine wont be long for this world. Mourinho didnt think he was good enough for his starting 11 at Chelsea. Cant imagine he'd lower his standards and make do instead of going out and bringing his own men in.
 
Any players that are 'decent at a few things' out and players that are 'excellent at their job' remain.

Personally think out:
Herrera
Fellaini
Darmian
 
I don't think that there is place for both Mata and Herrera, so I guess that one of them will leave. Heck, wouldn't be completely surprised if neither of them starts.

Mourinho liked Rooney always, so I guess he'll be here next season too. If he doesn't play good though, I can see him benching Rooney. He didn't mind bench Drogba who is the most preferred player of Mourinho, and he benched legends like Raul and Casillas.

I hope that De Gea will feel trophies and stay. Mourinho-Mendez connection might play a big part on that, and suddenly Mendez will become everyone's favorite agent.

While I expect Martial to continue being our most important player, heck knows what will happen with Depay.

Expect both Lingard and McNair to not get a chance here. Hoping that Januzaj, CBJ, Shaw and Pereira get one. Not convinced that Wilson will get one, instead I can see Mourinho going for a top experienced striker (maybe Ibra).

Can see Darmian becoming the best right back in the league under Mourinho. Don't expect Blind to continue playing in central defense.

Not sure about Blind though. I don't think he'd play Blind as CB and most likely sign a CB. Mata is obvious one who could go.
 
We'll sign a striker. Rooney will return to the 10 under Jose.

Blind he'd probably like as he's a very intelligent player and very versatile and reliable (and stays fit). Wouldn't use him as a center back nor would he be a starter most likely, but he'd probably rotate around everywhere but be back up to Shaw (or start depending on how Shaw recovers). But overall I don't think there'd be a huge amount of players he wouldn't like. Van Gaal is a bit similar to Mourinho in the structure we've played this season (fairly solid 4-2-3-1), and the likes of Shaw, Darmian, Smalling, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Martial, Rooney are all players who I'm sure he would love to have, as they're all hard working players, the fullbacks being very solid defensively, pretty tall, and keep their shape, while Martial being the different one from that group, but he'd be the star player for Mourinho to build around and his pace and ability on the break would be perfect for Mou (while also being physically strong and someone who does his bit defensively). Obviously De Gea as well, but his situation I don't think is linked to the manager in charge really.
 
We don't really have enough senior players for him to chuck all away. Maybe Mata and Fellaini. Pereira, Januzaj and Wilson will probably spend a year two bouncing from clubs on loan until they're sold.
 
Romero (maybe), Young, McNair, Carrick, Mata, Januzaj, Wilson and Fellaini to be dropped.
 
It's way too premature to speculate on what Mourinho would do as manager before there's any confirmation that he's actually taking over.

The better question is what would we do if we were taking over. There has to be a thread on this topic somewhere.
 
I think that, if he were to come here, he'd get rid of both Herrera and Mata, Fellaini and possibly (and this would probably be the most saddening for me as I like the guy a lot) Blind. I could see him bringing in a new DM and winger, possibly tryin to get Greizmann for the latter role. Oh, and I think he might actually get Januzaj firing a bit.

From what I recall, a similar thread around Van Gaal's announcement had all sorts of predictions.

He'll like Cleverley and Kagawa <-- His sort of players.

Van Persie will get preferential treatment over Rooney.

Young doesn't stand a chance. (Pretty sure I was guilty of this)

Fellaini will be first out the door.

Amongst others.


The reality is that Mourinho will probably surprise us. Wouldn't be surprised if he sticks with Mata this time around, continues with Valencia at right back and lets go of Rooney. (So I failed at refusing to make predictions).

Herrera is a bit like a mix of Oscar/Ramires who Mourinho always liked so I don't think he'd get rid of him. And Blind I can see him being a fan of because of his intelligence and versatility. Probably wouldn't start, but as a back up left back and option for many other places, don't see why he wouldn't. It's only really Mata where we know he's not suited to Mou's style. Fellaini... who knows. Mourinho might think he could be useful at times.

I'd be surprised if Mourinho doesn't use Valencia at right back. The players we have who can be fullbacks (Shaw/Blind/Rojo for left back and Darmian/Valencia) is basically a perfect Mourinho type set up at fullback. Same with Smalling in the middle. I doubt he'd get rid of more then a couple of players really. It's not like we have a huge squad.
 
I reckon he'd love Fellaini. Probably turn him into his lead centre forward. He'd also really like Darmian and Schneiderlin. Shaw, Schweini, Martial and Rooney would also be favourites and would be in the side along with Smalling, Herrera and Shaw.

He'd want to bring in another centre back and a right sided attacker. Possibly another defensive midfielder as well. Mata, Blind, Valencia, Carrick, Memphis, Januzaj and Wilson would all probably find themselves on the fringes.
 
Mourinho will love Darmian. Think he'll also value Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Smalling, Herrera, Shaw, Rooney and Valencia.

He was presumably the one behind Chelsea's pursuit of Martial in the summer, and given his ability would probably look to build the team around him like he did with Drogba.

Not sure about Rojo, Blind and Jones, could go either way. Memphis, Januzaj and Pereira will probably have the most work to do to convince him they belong here.

Mata is a goner but Fellaini might get lucky given his skill set of target man + thug.
 
Would anyone be that bothered if Mata left? Nifty player, would be remembered fondly, not the kind of consistent attacking player that is crucial in a title winning team.

Can't see fringe young players like Pereira surviving neither

Old fogeys like Carrick, Rooney, Schweinsteiger will probably survive

Good point. However I think Mourinho is known enough by many of us to be more accurate with our predictions, such as the keeping Rooney one. Agree with you generally (although speculation is fun).
 
Mata, Pereira, Januzaj, Fellaini and Borthwick Jackson would suffer.

Smalling, Darmian, Schneiderlin, Rooney and Schweinsteiger would thrive.
 
I saw Fellaini mentioned as a stayer, but he has no tactical disciplne. Also the young players have nothing to worry about, players like Zouma, Varane, Terry, Di Maria, or Benzema managed to play for him, as long as they work hard and respect his intructions they will be in his good books.
 
Fellaini will be converted to a striker. Jose loves a strong target man to bring the midfield and wingers into the attack. There would be few better at it than Fellaini. Rooney will be first choice, though.

Mata will be gone. Januzaj will struggle unless he can find his scoring touch. Herrera will will find his place as a goal scoring midfielder in a 3. Depay's future will hinge on whether he can add defensive discipline to his game. Mourinho will love him if he does.

A lot of those predications came about because of that Dutch poster who joined a couple of years ago (NLmax?). He thought LvG and Depay would both be amazing. Everyone believed him because he wrote long and meandering posts which sounded semi-plausible. Couldn't have been been further from the mark.

Shaw and Martial probably won't have too many problems. Memphis, Pereira, Januzaj, Wilson, Borthwick-Jackson, McNair and Lingard will have to play out of their skins to avoid their careers stagnating.

Bit premature this? Hopefully the rumors are true but let's wait and see before we start with the calculations.

I'd be pretty happy to see Ibra as well for a season or two at United. :drool:
 
He was very positive about Adnan after being asked about him when he hit the limelight in the Moyes season, called him very 'complete'. This doesn't mean anything though. As a matter of fact I actually felt Jose was trying not to discourage Moyes, because Moyes seemed a bit more concerned with giving an 18 year old playing time than trying to compete for a top 4 spot at that time.

Why? Mourinho ignores players for only three reasons, not good enough, not suited to his plans or not commited enough. Personally I can't tell who will be in which category and I don't see how anyone could.

Well, none of them are good enough yet to start for a team carrying Mourinho's ambitions. It's an uphill battle from there.
