Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Stage Fright
Not what I was expecting after watching the trailer. It seems to be billed as a black comedy slasher like Scream but it's actually a musical slasher with a bit of comedy. The songs were ok, one or two were quite brilliant. The acting wasnt the worst but the pacing was boring, with nothing really happening until the final third and you can guess the killer within the first 20 mins of the film. The killer was quite good and his musical parts were pretty well done and the kills were decent as well. The main actress wears a corset in the final act and her tits look sublime so extra points for that 5.5/10

Captain America 2

Better than the first but God, I do not care about this shit anymore.

I can totally dig that statement. That flying fecker was really annoying...how handy to make an acquaintance who just happens to be some super special forces bloke.

Why doesn't somebody shoot the Captain's feet to stop him?

The River - The transfer I saw was fantastic, looked really amazing for a film made in 1951. The film itself however was nothing special, uneventful white aristocrat problems.

Non Stop - 2.75/5

About what I expected it to be, was disappointed by the reveal of the killer during the third act, but wasn't too bad for a time killing blockbuster. Still, gotta love Liam Neeson diving through the air firing a gun in an enclosed space with about 100 people in it.

The Easy Life - Loved it. A funny and joyous road movie with the magnetic Vittorio Gassman and the meek Jean-Louis Trintignant. Light hearted but at the same time very real.

Truly awful, only politeness prevented me walking out.
I just don't understand what your expectations could've been? It's Anderson at his most Andersony self, I mean either you hate Anderson and I don't know why you were there in the first place, or you don't hate him, and what exactly didn't you like about it?

I think Anderson is shit but I was persuaded against my better judgement to give the clunt another go. Twee, twee, twee, twee, twee.

Anderson seems to completely polarize opinion for some reason. I can't stand his films either but my Mrs loves them.

The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) Really enjoyed this classic Sci-fi flick. Compelling, well-paced story. The effects have stood up about as well as you could expect for a film from that period. 7.5/10

Calvary

A mixed bag. On the plus side Brendan Gleeson and a few other actors are excellent, especially some that are better known for comedic roles. Looks great and is quite a bit more ambitious than The Guard. A few great scenes as well.

On the other hand, all the characters bar Gleeson are very obvious and one dimensional representations of various aspects of Irish society. This is particularly true of Dylan Moran and Aiden Gillen's characters. Also, Gillen does the worst Irish accent I've heard since the last time Aiden Gillen played an Irishman (which he in fact is).

Not surprised to see that it's getting better reviews abroad than it is within Ireland as a foreign audience is less likely to pick up on how tired these portrayals of modern Ireland are. If that side of it doesn't bother you then it's a pretty interesting film.

I've stopped trying. I hate his films and his stupid pretentious style.

Draft Day - 5/10 Decent flick...however I felt it was more of a two hour commercial for the Shield. I think the movie was more of an overview of a particular draft day as opposed to what it could of been. But with the Shield it's all about protecting the brand...they dumbed it down a bit with all of the facts they kept throwing in about past drafts etc. Character wise, we've all seen them before so there was no real standout. I still think if you enjoy football you should check it out. It's not often the NFL lets use of it's license in this type of medium.

I thought Escape From New York was pretty shit actually, and I'm a Carpenter fan. Fargo on the other hand, absolutely love it.

The Silence of the Lambs - Jame Gumb is the worst fictional name I've ever heard. 8/10

Hannibal - I think Ray Liotta is secretly a pretty shit actor. 6/10

Escape From New York was fun at the time but I suspect it has aged badly. Fargo is brilliant.

Eden Lake or how a camping trip can go horribly wrong. I like Michael Fassbender and the female lead was super cute. The movie was quite intense however it did feel a bit too contrived. Still a decent watch. 6/10

Kelly Reilly! Must have downloaded this like 5 years ago, before I really knew Fassbender, but never watched it. Had no idea he was in it!

If you like Kelly Reilly, you should check out two French comedies, "L'auberge espagnole" and "Les poupées russes", nice little enjoyable films. The first one is about a young French guy going to study in Barcelona for a year and sharing a flat with loads of other European students (the main language in the film is French but there's loads of different ones spoken, so you'll need subtitles!), and the second one is a follow up something like 10 years later. In the first, Kelly Reilly is a bit chubby if I recall correctly and has more of a small part, in the second she's beautiful though and has a bigger part.

I watched "L'auberge espagnole" not long ago, compared to my experience of studying in Barcelona it was very nonindulgent and tame but it was nice to see some familiar locations again. Studying abroad is the shit.

Yeah but you're a crack whore and a meth head Nilsson!

Le Week-end 8.0/10 Just out in the states. Mature look at a long-term marriage and the contradictions inherent in a close relationship that lasts 30 years. Jeff Goldblum is wonderful as a smarmy embodiment of success. I think this movie speaks more to folks, like me, of a certain age.

Oh you.

A Touch of Sin - A sort of sprawling bleak take on Modern China based on four interconnected real-life events. The first one was interesting but ended kinda abruptly, the second suffered the same fate, the third was kinda slow and unengaging with some strange martial arts inputs that felt a bit out of place. I liked the fourth one the best and would have liked to have seen more of that one. The socio-political themes often ended up taking the backseat for the excessive violence which didn't really do much for me. A nice look into Modern China but overall a bit unrefined and lacking bite.

the grand budapest hotel - i've really liked previous wes anderson films, but this just felt a complete mess, a series of silly set pieces. still, i don't understand the strength of dislike his style generates, there seems hardly enough there to get worked up about. surely he's the biggest take it or leave director there is.

fitzcarraldo - second time viewing it & i think i just don't get herzog. his films are like opera & through a camera everything is so over the top & impossible to take seriously. it's an incredible story & there are some great visuals, but i liked it a lot less than aguire, which i didn't like much either.

eastern promises - epic fight scene but the romantic angle felt needless & it was all a bit of a nonsense. enjoyed it a lot less than other cronenberg films.

bourne legacy - proof that i'm (or people are) impossible to please. i usually moan about stupid plots & pacing, but this kind of had neither. instead it was just pretty dull.

shame - i like it a lot more in retrospect than i did watching it. it nailed complete loneliness, the scenes with the female coworker were brilliant. the end bit with the sister felt kind of cheap to me, in contrast with how underplayed the rest was. and the musical choices were bizarre, especially the diegetic bits. i find it hard to imagine someone on the verge of a breakdown listening to brandenburg & the well tempered clavier.

unconscious/inconscientes - became a bit stupid in places, but overall it was a really light & fun watch, with great back and forth between the leads. felt more like a stage or tv farce than a film.

the baxter - matched my mood & was funny the first 10 or so minutes, as my buzz started to wear off it became as painful as the romcoms it started out parodying. dinklage looked pretty dashing & was funny in a cameo, & despite playing a really tired role (quirky, initially overlooked love interest), michelle williams stood out as great.

a woman under the influence - due to its really long takes, some incredible scenes were mixed in with ones that didn't work or just ran too long & became as awkward & embarrassing as reality. it felt a really tiring watch, but the few bits that worked (rowlands through her one night stand & how falk interacts with his family & visitors to the home) were better than most things on film. cool & interesting soundtrack.

harmful insect/gaichû - great, with one of the most bleak endings, showing how hard life is for a child when surrounded by adults who consistently let them down. a few things didn't work (the story's broken up by flash cards showing the lead's correspondence with another character - the written text felt too dramatic & plain spoken for how the rest of the story is told), but it was a really good watch. a number girl track in the soundtrack was a bonus.

Have you seen the documentary on the filming of Fitzcarraldo, Burden of Dreams? Much better than the actual film which just felt like an unnecessary, inferior copy of Aguirre.

The Social Network-8/10

Watched this the other day and really enjoyed it. Two leads put in good performances, and Timberlake's not too bad either. Not sure how accurate it is and a lot of the computer jargon passed over my head, but still an entertaining and sometimes quite funny movie with a good, well done script.

Ha. Nah I've not seen it, will definitely check it out once the film's faded from my mind. I've seen the doc. with Kinski, My Best Fiend, which is amazing.

Moodysson's latest comes out in the UK on Friday along with Locke (Tom Hardy sat in a car), just searched back and read your thoughts. Am pretty tempted to go & see it. Anyone seen Calvary (in movie previews voice: From the writer & director of the Guard)?

Die
Six strangers who all attempted suicide are captured and forced to play a game of 'roll the dice', letting fate decide their lives. Similar to Saw, minus the graphic violence. The film thinks it is more clever than it is. The story doesnt flow well, mainly because the flashbacks come in at random points. It all just feels disjointed. The ending is laughably shit. Not a great film, more of a time filler to be honest 4.5/10

The Ice Storm - A sad and detached look at 70's suburbia. I enjoyed the look and feel of it, the cast was excellent but I didn't really walk away from it having gained that many insights.

I Am Cuba - A dreamy and visually extravagant propaganda ride through post-revolution Cuba. It's definitely up there as one of the best shot films ever, very unique and innovative cinematography. Good film.
