Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Well the 3D is used perfectly in it, and I hate 3D too. I feel it elevated it from just a 'stylish' film to an immersive experience, which was the major (and sole) interest of the film, really.

2D, I get a headache from 3D. Though I guess it wouldn't change much of my opinion that it's a very stylish but utterly empty film.

I described it as a fairground ride of a movie when I saw it if 3D, visually stunning and immersive on that level, but not too much to latch onto emotionally from the story-line so I can completely understand the score you gave it. It really is a cinema movie and needs to be seen in either Imax or 3D otherwise its a pretty pointless movie as its intentionally quite linear in terms of storyline.

A film as impressive visually as that deserves to exist on style alone. I think it had substance too. Had a lot going on regarding survival, rebirth, family, loneliness.

That's a fair point too. I have to say it didn't really work for me on any emotional level, but for me it didn't seem to be trying too hard to do that. For me its simply a visual roller-coaster of a movie that needs to be seen in its natural home of the cinema.

Watched The Illusionist a few days ago. It's a French animated movie about an old magician who leaves France for England to find work. The movie centres around his friendship with a female companion that he acquired on his travels in a remote part of Scotland. The young woman, Alice, mesmerised by the magician secretly joined the conjurer on his working trip. The film's naive storyline may raise some eyebrows in our modern cynical world, a bloke and a young woman living together on their travels, I hear you say?! But this is a story written in the 50s...when blokes weren't dirty old men or something. It was actually based the writer's (Tati) own relationship with his daughter. But this wasn't only about their relationship, The Illusionist highlighted the move away from stand up performers to rock and roll bands and consequent hardships of the out dated stand up performer - clowns on suicide watch eh?! As their relationship blossomed, Alice came of age... And with that the inevitable heart break.

The animation was superb, in fact you'd be hard pushed to find anything better, a must for anyone who loves hand drawn animation. The dialogue was minimal, characters relied mainly on gestures and the odd mumbled sentence.

Again, a must for anyone who loves a visual treat.

Wolf Creek 2
Thought the original was ok but this was a needless sequel. Concentrated on the antagonist too much, leading to me not giving a shit about the people he is trying to kill as their characters have near on 0 character development. A lot of chase scenes, unbelievable moments, too many coincidences and pure stupidity from characters make this hard to watch. The villain was played pretty well though and it was suspenseful in places. Was pretty bored until the last 15 or so minutes 4.5/10

Bling Ring
Started off well but it seemed like a copy and paste job. Kids break into house, steal shit, party, post on facebook repeat. Beyond that, it was a borefest 4/10

Thinner

I really love Stephen King stories. Even though most don't translate well into visual medium, they have so much imagination and subtlety that they are always enjoyable. I actually thought this was one of the better portrayals of a Stephen King novel. It does come across comical a little bit due to the acting (especially at the start) but the story keeps you hooked. Loved the final act as well 7/10

Bad Neighbours

This is my type of comedy, crude and silly. Seth Rogan was Seth Rogan as usual and Zac Effron showed a new side to him, and I hope he does more roles like this. Rose Byrne couldn't pull off the comical elements needed in her role but her chemistry with Seth Rogan seemed quite natural. A lot of the jokes seemed hit and miss and your level of enjoyment will probably depend a lot on your mood and crowd when watching this. There is a great Batman talk in the film too 7.5/10

Pompeii

Thought this will be utter shit but although it is silly, it is also very entertaining. Constant action and CGI galore and nice to see Bastard Snow running around acting hard. The dialogue was awful though and Jack Bauer was miscast 6/10

Frozen

Feel like the only sane person in an insane world as this seemed average at best. This coming from someone who loves Disney/Pixar etc. Just felt old, tired and unoriginal with very little emotional impact. 6/10

I have no idea why it did as well as it did.

It was cliche, most of it rehashed from previous stories. Maybe its just because I'm older now but the songs were quite shit by Disney standards. compared with the 90's Disney films anyway.

What did everyone think of Her?

I really enjoyed it when I saw it at the cinema. Dragged at times but thought it was a great watch.. at the time I thought I wouldn't bother watching it again though, not for quite some time atleast but I feel like I can't remember huge chunks of it so will try to give it a rewatch at some point soon.

Blue is the Warmest Color - Abdellatif Kechiche (2013)

Didn't think I was going to really like this after the hype and all, but thought it was a fantastic film. Great acting by such young women in very heavy circumstances. Was especially blown away by the Adele character. Brilliant, meaningful dialogue throughout the film and the direction was full of beautiful, original cinematography and was artistically impeccable. Funny how the actual "lesbian" aspect of it was so overshadowed by so many other themes. Can easily see how this won Cannes and how the jury raised the two young actresses to a special status equal to the director and the film.

I understand the two young actresses were quite affected by the demands of the director and I can see why. Not in the same way that Maria Schneider was in Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris, but still, they were very demanding and controversial roles for such young actresses, which they pulled off amazingly well. I was very moved by the ending.

9 cocks up

I saw an article which pretty much showed that Frozen mirrors the Lion King:

Didn't really like the concept, only liked the snowman and reindeer as characters, and find the songs annoyingly catchy

Asian High School Girls

4 Cute asian chicks got drugged, and raped. 1 of them going suicide, and the 3 of them becomes a stripper (yes, a stripper) to fund for their arsenal and martial arts training, going on a femme fatale revenge rampage.

Tits, asian tits, and one of the asian chick is quite a looker while the rest are just meh.... tits galore.

Watched it in speed 2x

well.. it's just one of those guilty pleasure of seeing asian tits in a a cheap B grade hollywood movies. The acting are terrible and amateurish.

Spiderman 2 : The Rise of the Electro

Getting boring halfway, the fight scene and action scene should have been breathtaking, but with the rise of many superhero movies and transformer, it's hard to get excited over anything these days. The first Transformer movie really raises the bar on CGI effect that nothing amazes me anymore. If any I'm getting tired and wanting the whole thing to just get done and over with.

I haven't read the original spiderman comics, but I think Garfield make a right impretation of spidey. Spiderman was always known to be witty and a joker in his own right (I might be wrong), but it's refreshing to see them getting it right in that department, compared to the log of wood that is Tobey McGuire.

Gwen was lively and imo she's carrying the movie with her persona. Jamie Foxx was useless and they could have put anyone as electro and it doesn't make a difference. Harry Osbourne I find him intriquing and I kinda like his character development in here. He reminds me of the wash up rock band drug abuse cut board character. Green Goblin was too much and too hasty, what should have been a nemesis for Spiderman ended up as just another silly henchmen fight.

Still, worth the admission fee for seeing CGI and breathtaking fights and stuffs.

Popcorn level : 3.5/5

I thought the directing was very heavy handed in Adèle, thought Kéchiche really lacked the subtetly that would've made it a decent film. Overall, I found it long and rather boring.

Adèle Exarchopoulos was brilliant though. Also, the actresses weren't especially marked because of the demands of the parts, but because Kéchiche is a bastard to everyone around him, very simply (but it's been known for ages within the cinema industry, nothing new there).

Afflicted
I'm always a little weary when watching "found footage" films but this was a really good one, probably one of the best since Chronicle. The cameraman (in the film) isn't an amateur so there's none of that shaky shit camera work that gives you nausea, instead, it's shot really quite well. It really breathes new life into the genre and is a very refreshing take not only on found footage films but also another genre...
vampirism!
...The acting was better than the usual found footage fair and it actually has an ending unlike most found footage films. However, it does run a little tiresome in the second half but the effects were done so well that it always keeps you hooked. Really enjoyed this 7.5/10

Ok good to know, I've had it on my harddrive for a while and was tinkering with the idea of watching it, but somehow I just never get to it!
Yeah it's not that great though just liked the overall idea of the film. It's one of those good ideas executed quite poorly. Wouldn't watch it unless your stuck with nothing else to see. I would however dig out Afflicted, it's really quite good

For me The Purge is the new benchmark of this.
Very good shout. I really don't see why Hollywood remakes films that are perfectly fine (Total Recall, Robocop etc) when there's great ideas that were done awfully... these are the kinds of films that need to be remade!

Yeah I've definitely noted Afflicted, always on the look out for a new decent horror flick so I'll give it a go!
I'd go along with that. Decent idea, but feck me what an awful film.

Another decent candidate would be In Time - though that film is nowhere near as bad as The Purge.
In Time is a perfect example. What a mess of a film!

Really really, shit rom-com that I was dragged to against my better judgment. You can't remember large parts of it because it's completely unmemorable, amnesia is your friend.
