Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Embrace it.

Comment Wang-Fo fut sauvé - A nice little atmospheric and contemplative animated short, directed by the Fantastic Planet director.

@Rooney in Dublin you never watched Under the Skin did you?
I did! Sorry, I forgot to reply the other time you asked me about it. I really liked the atmosphere, how it was shot and Johansson's performance, and it was definitely an interesting film, unlike anything I'd seen in a while. I thought it got a tad repetitive after a while, but overall a really good film and one of the best of 2014, definitely.

Moneyball - It's funny how this movie impressed me so much considering it's about Baseball which I have 0 interest in. Can't believe it took me so long to see it, would recommend it to anyone, you don't necessarily have to be a sports fan. To sum up, this is a movie about a General manager (Brad Pitt) who works for a Baseball team functioning on a extremely limited budget.

9/10

Why the feck am I your sister though?

Lovers, I'd get it. Sister?
Hey it took me by surprise too. I'd guess because you're the more feminine one and he sees us as siblings? Or maybe Archie is fond of a bit of ye old incestuous relations and uses us for his twisted fantasies.

I think it's that. Bloody perverted ozzie sicko.

Groovy.

Weird. Tried to buy Solaris at the BFI store last month, for some reason they only had an Italian DVD with no English subtitles. Still need to see it.

The One I Know - Highly original and fun movie. Can't recall who recommended it here but thanks for that, enjoyed it.

Man Of Steel
Far better than it had any right to be. Always found superman to be a bit of a wuss with shit baddies, but this is a decent reboot. Lois Lane isn't fit in it, thankfully, faithful to the original!
Tons of action, darker than you'd imagine and the first bit of cheese was right at the end. 10/16

Also, saw Birdman tonight. Loved it. A few of the more fantastical elements/ camera tricks took me too far out the film but it looked, and sounded brilliant, the acting was wonderful and some of the scenes were among my favourites in a long time (spoilers: the whole times square sequence, and final performance after we saw the real gun). I don't know if re-watches will make me appreciate it more, or if the pretentious messages that were alluded to will get in the way, they didn't seem too bad at the cinema.

I won't lie, it's exactly the latter.

Did you not find the last 20 minutes or so a bit tedious when they kept smashing through buildings?

Just watched the last half hour of History of Violence again and Scanners is on Flimfour. David Cronenberg will always be one of my favourite directors. Love his originality and low key approach to film direction.

A bit but I was watching it on my shiny new 3d TV, so the more of that shit the better!

Inherent Vice

I'm gonna have to watch this again if i want to get my head around anything plot related but it was very funny. Closer in tone and style to Boogie Nights (which I love) than his more recent stuff and Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic.

American Warship.

When a US plane is taken down over seas by an unknown assailant, the army is sure it was North Korea and a new war is about to break out. Even worse, the true attacker is an alien armed force and only one old battleship can stop them.
It was just what I expected, a sci-fi B movie with questionable action a dodgy special effects.
Mario Van Peebles played his part well enough, which was more than an aging and podgy Carl Weathers did , he was dreadful.
I did not hate this film, kept me watching until the end, if you like chessy scf-fi and I do , you will like this.

6/10

Thought Inherent Vice was incredible, actually got a high from watching it. Feels like a new favourite that's going to be watched over and over.

Age of Ice

When sudden and massive earthquakes open the Arabian tectonic plate, the result is unstable weather and freezing temperatures that will be unsurvivable by nightfall.
I love crappy disaster film and this was typical Asylum rubbish, fully expected it to be bad and it was.
But even I hated this , bad acting dreadful story and so many mistakes.

American Sniper

Good plot, really good performance from Cooper, yet I still felt like it was lacking something. I think the trailer made it look better than it actually was. Didn't delve into Cooper's character anywhere near as much as I thought it would.

The Occupants.

Lucy has a new husband, a new home and a new baby, but old ghosts won't let her be. She tries to help the tortured souls break free of their torment and move on, but soon finds these ghosts don't want her help.
The film started off really well and then about half way went to pot, the twist was really obvious.
The story was decent enough but could of been a lot better has could the film.
The one high point was Cristin Mililoti who played Lucy , she was excellent.
Not the worst ghost film I have seen.

5/10

Inherent Vice had too much bollocks in it to be really amazing (basically everything with Owen Wilson or the GF) but it had some fantastically fun moments, and Phoenix is brilliant. If it had stayed at the height of it's peaks all the way it would've been a classic, but it dragged and meandered and (ironically) indulged itself too often. It's easily about half an hour too long too.

The Possession of Micheal King.

I different take on a possession film , this is a found footage one
Michael King (Shane Johnson), who doesn't believe in God or the Devil. Following the sudden death of his wife, Michael decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural, making himself the center of the experiment - allowing demonologists, necromancers, and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him - in the hopes that when they fail, he'll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth. But something does happen. An evil and horrifying force has taken over Michael King. And it will not let him go.

It was OK , never really go going for me , seen better and not changed my views on found footage.

Yeah Owen Wilson was a cowardly casting choice imo. He always plays that kind of character.

That shot with Phoenix and his changing expressions as he was staring at Brolin eating that chocolate banana in the car made me piss.
