Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Put this [SP0ILER] at the start of the sentence and this [/SP0ILER] at the end

Replace the 0 with O obviously.
Thanks !
Ah cheers. Well yeah, I'm surprised I didn't react more to that ending  Pitch black, headphones on, screen merely inches away from my eyes. Another day, it would have had me squeeling
Ya, I hate spiders so it was a challenging ending to say the least

The Imitation Game Despite there being a great story to tell they fell between 2 stools here uncertain if they wanted to make it a war time drama or an inditement of his treatment after the war and ended up failing pretty much with either. The actung was great but Cumberbatch's Turing with added Rainman was annoying as Turing was brilliant but also rather flambouyant by all accounts even if he also didn't suffer fools easily. And wtf was John Cairncross doing in the story? Completw rubbish with no purpose as far as I can tell. 6.5/10

Birdman

I completely missed the point of the ending part where he goes on the ledge, and his daughter then looks out the window and into the sky. Did he just kill himself? Or was it supposed to be like he metaphorically flew away or some shit like that? I understood most of what was going on throughout, but that kind of went over my head a bit.

I read a good explanation were she now sees him as he sees himself.

Amadeus

Sort of based on the true story of a guy who knew Mozart, but was really jealous of him and shit like that since Mozart's better than he will ever be. Incredibly long, but very good too. Mozart is given enough arrogance for it to be understandable why he's hateable, but enough innocence and imagination for him to still come across as sympathetic at times. Salieri's growing hatred of Mozart and gradual moral decadence is also very well done. Really good film overall, even for someone who's only listened to little bits of opera/classical music here and there.

8.5/10

Yeah, I remember seeing something along those lines.

I'm just glad though that the opening is open to interpretation. When I first watched it, I assumed I'd completely missed the point, and was annoyed since I'd generally got the themes and ideas the movie was putting across. Turns out it's not really obvious though, and can be interpreted in many ways. Good movie.

The ending was a bit of a vague fudge. It's obvious where the "cleanest" place to end it was, but I'm sort of glad they didn't. Trouble is it was always going to be a fudge of some sort after that.

I still enjoyed it anyway (assuming you're referring to Birdman). Since it was a pretty batshit crazy film at certain points, it was able to get away with the more ambiguous ending.

Did you watch it? What did you think? :nervous:

 Most action-packed film I've seen for a while. I'd give it a 7/10. I liked how much conviction he had in every kill - as if he makes sure that everyone must die twice

Cheers Twigg. Problem with this is, every time you now compliment a film in this thread, I'll automatically take it as a recommendation.

I'll be watching you Twiggy....

Hmm... I guess I'll only compliment good films then, if that makes sense

I loved John Wick. Miles more entertaining than Taken. It may have basically been a live action video game, but at least the director was in on it. The whole bodyshot/headshot thing wast straight out of COD.

Loved it too. Probably the best action movie I've watched since The Raid 2.
I'm hoping for at least one sequel.
It gets 8/10 from me.

I've seen the first half of John Wick, enjoying it so far

So about 8,000 kills in

Also.. loved this

Brainless fun although I got a bit bored before the end.

Finished How To Train Your Dragon 2 & Whiplash the past week or so, both were pretty fantastic, specifically Whiplash. JK Simmons and Miles Teller are phenomenal, especially the former. I mean, damn, one of the best performances I've seen, period.

Have Inside Llewyn Davis downloaded and ready to watch, anyone have any thoughts on it?

I recorded The Tree of Life over Christmas, and finally got around to watching it last night. It wasn't long before I realized that watching my Christmas tree would have provided more entertainment, but, that option no longer being available, I persevered with the movie to the 50 minute mark, when I woke from my stupor and turned it off. Maybe the director relented later on and actually allowed something to happen, but I couldn't face the prospect of seeing Jessica Chastain skipping down the road, twirling around, communing with the trees, and smiling at the skies one more time.

You have to wonder how something like this gets made? Is it a movie or the director's personal visual essay 'What I think about Life, the Universe and Everything, with Very Few Words'?

I'm with you. That was the most stinking pile of pretentious garbage I've ever seen. I was with people so I had to watch it to the end too. Painful.

'A guy who knew Mozart' I guess in that vein Rooney will forever be remembered as just a guy who knew Ronaldo!

Do you like Malick's other stuff usually?

Don't particularly agree that Malick's films are pretentious. They're not easily accessible or for a large audience, probably, but mainly cos they're so different from what others do, not necessarily because they're pretentious. Tree of Life's message is actually incredibly simple.

If certain people are gonna kick off about their religion being poked fun at I think movie buffs are entitled to go apeshit over this...

Steven Soderbergh Recuts Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most iconic science fiction films of all time. Transcending the very genre it helped to modernize, it would be an act of desecration for any other person to re-cut Kubrick's masterpiece. Well, hey would you look at that, guess what Steven Soderbergh just did?

Soderbergh's greatest sin? It appears that he cut out the videophones! This is like theMonkey Jesus fresco fiasco all over again.

But this isn't the first time Soderbergh has played around with footage from other filmmakers. Last year he mashed up Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho with Gus Van Sant's 1998 shot for shot remake. Is nothing sacred? JK, nothing's sacred.

You can watch the film at Soderbergh's site,Extension 765. And don't forget Soderbergh's black and white version of Raiders of the Lost Ark!

Blasphemy!

Probably not the best description, although I suppose it technically fits in with the main theme of the movie when you think about it.

Blasphemy!

Anyone who has seen Schizopolis will probably realize that Soderberg is a bit of a troll and so its not worth taking notice of him when he does stuff like this. I'll ignore him till he decides to make decent films again. Surprised he got permission from Kubrick's estate/MGM to to alter the movie in any way whatsoever though.

Whiplash

Absolutely superb. Gripping from start to finish with 2 fantastic central performances. Well worthy of all the praise it's been getting.

Seeing Whiplash and American Sniper BTB tomorrow. Looking forward to both.

Just Watched John Wick. Really good action movie, very slick and stylish. Kinda reminiscent of Jack Reacher for me. Really enjoyed seeing Keanu kick some ass again. Very solid 8/10 for me.

Fury - A slightly more realistic take on WW2 and the horrors of war in general. Great acting, great visuals and some interesting scenes. solid 8/10 for me

The soundtrack and cinematography was great.

Foxcatcher - Not sure how I feel about this one. It's a very slow, cold, methodical movie - that really doesn't give much away... and asks the viwer to read as much into every scene as you possible can, because it's not going to spoon-feed you anything (which I could say is almost to its detrement, but it feels odd complaining about a film that doesn't spell everything out for the audience) - and yet I feel like chunks of the story and character breakdowns are either underplayed, not explored enough or ommitted entirely... as if there was a lote more going on here that we didn't get to see. Ultiamtely though, it is an actors film for actors - and everyone in it is very good... and its weird that Tatum hasn't got as much praise as the other two, as he's every bit as good in my view.

Birdman - I spent the first hour hating it but came out a fan. Hard to describe its appeal but I think Keaton and Norton are probably it. Had loads wrong with it but I still think it's a great film. Confusing experience.

A lot of the acting pulled me out of it, I don't think I've seen worse from Watts and Stone. The camera work was daft as well especially when the digital edits started warping the walls and characters were walking through random doors for no reason. The ending was a scene later than it should've been too.

You're obviously looking for problems. The camera work added to the idiosyncrasy of the spectacle, and considering it was executed by Lubezki, I'm not sure if you're in a position to call it 'daft'.

And you obviously haven't seen Diana.
