Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Birdman is a brilliant thing, I liked it, but it weren't much fun. Technically majestic, wearily postmodern and precious. I found it quite exhausting. Credit to the immaculate direction and camera work which are largely responsible for this mightily impressive construct. The Story and themes in comparison did nothing for me, Fink/Fellini/DiCillo/Kaufman/Simpsons did it. Still, it's a novel way of dispensing the same old. It's PEZ.

I agree, the only part that bothered me was the....

car crash scene. That was a little over the top....

The writing was great especially for JK Simmons character...hilarious at times.

Especially:

Get the feck out of my sight before I demolish you!

Hunger Games: Mockingbollocks. I've only seen the first 30 minutes, and as far as I can tell the only reason to continue is to see if this is the worst thing ever made. I quite liked the last one but this is just redonkulous.

Foxcatcher - 7/10

Jesus H Christ what a depressing film. Everything about it was doom and gloom. That being said, overall decent flick. I thought the three actors all played their parts very well. Dupont must of seriously had one fecked up childhood.

We've become addicted and tied to franchises these days.

Most of us knew what Transformer X will dish, the same cliche, the same line, the same bollocks, even predicted the ending, the beginning, and practically it's just becoming like a video game sequel, but we still tend to watch the big movie of the year....

Whiplash is genuinely amazing and the best film I've seen in quite some time, at least from the U.S. 9/10

The Imitation Game (9/10)
Loved Cumberbatch's performance, scintillating. The guy is one of the best actors for these kind of roles. The narrative was excellent and kept you interested from the moment the movie started.

Predestination (6/10)
Still cannot understand where the fck did Hawke come from? I understand the chicken/egg reference but for God's sake this was as confusing as they come. Apart from that, the pace of the movie was good.

Whiplash - Brilliant film. The acting, script and overall flow of the movie was exquisite. The fact I'm a drummer myself might make me slightly biased towards this film but overall I think most people would enjoy it. Probably in my top 3 movies of 2014. 9/10

Birdman -
I can see why this movie is receiving quite a lot of praise, to me personally it did not live up to the expectations. Great acting and brilliant camera work though.
6.8/10

Big Hero 6 -
If you like Marvel movies and you enjoy animation, then you are going to love this. 8/10

Who would have thought that kid from 21 and over is able to put in a performance like that . Brilliant film.

I don't think I've seen a bad review for Whiplash in this thread.

The rule of thumb with peterstorey is to flip his posts on their head, which means he loved it.

The original short story by Robert Heinlein will explain it all. Its an easy pdf download online. From memory the original short story is titled " All you Zombies"

Couldn't agree more. Absolutely loved it!

Genuinely felt nervous watching it at times. Thought Simmons performance was amazing. I though Eddie Redmayne's performance was the best thing I'd seen recently but this is well up there.

I don't think I've seen a bad review for Whiplash in this thread.

Not to mention the vast majority have all either been an 8 or 9/10. Nearly everyone seems to think it was fantastic.

Regarding Whiplash....

A friend of mine watched it last night, and he noticed that in the last few seconds of the ending scene you see Fletcher smile towards Neeman. The camera doesn't show the mouth, just below the nose and the creases above the mouth. He believes that Fletcher mouths "Good job", which of course Fletcher exclaims earlier in the film that those are the two worst words in the English vocabulary.

I like the mystery on whether he says that or not. fecking hell I love the film

Stonehearst Asylum
A mystery thriller about a doctor who goes to work as an apprentice at a mental asylum but not all is at it seems. Decent flick, some good moments of tension and decent acting from a cast boasting Brendan Gleeson, Michael Cain, Kate Beckinsale and Ben Kingsley. The main thing I got from this film is that Kate Beckinsale is still hot as a mental patient 6.5/10

I have had this sat on HDD for a while, I will give it a watch , sound decent enough.

Interesting. I do remember that part, but I originally thought Fletcher simply smiled in appreciation. The fact that his mouth is hidden is an interesting choice though.

Boyhood - Watched this earlier as I watched the BAFTAS and had heard about it a lot. Big fan of Richard Linklater too, love Dazed and Confused!

I thought it was a great movie for 2 hours and tailed off slightly towards the end. Arquette was superb and I loved Hawke as the father. Both very convincing.

Very solid 8.5/10 from me.

Whiplash - surely I'm not the only person who doesn't get the hype...

The supposed great ending was him playing the drums for 20 minutes. 15 minutes longer then was necessary. The car crash preceding that was predictable as was the girlfriend situation.

Good acting but the storyline was mediocre.

6/10

My dad thought it was crap. I  at him.

Surprised you didn't like the ending. I was literally shaking by the end of it, though it was one of the most intense and gripping movie scenes I've ever seen. I screamed out my excitement when the credits rolled and I've never done that before in the cinema.

I do agree that it has issues with some clichéd and unconvincing scenes, for example the
break-up and the dinner scene
but the best parts, for me, are up there with the best I've ever seen, making it a 9/10 for me and my pick for movie of the year.

I just watched the ending a few times over and I just don't see what your friend mentioned.

I thought the same. I had to watch it a few times, but you do see his mouth go up and down as if he's mouthing something. If it was him just smiling, it would just go up and that's it.

Also....

The name of the scene is "Good job". Just realised this a few moments ago.

Whipliash: A nothing film about sweaty drumming and a very angry music teacher in his 60s who threatens to 'demolish' nerds with his 'ex-flabby, last-minute workout to fit the role-style, semi-beefy-ish' arms. His performance is a dime in a dozen but obviously his angriness and his popular scathing/sarcastic/angry pre-googled oneliners are delivered fluently (like any decent actor worth his salt should be able to) which no doubt impressed a fair few movie-buffs who now wear awfully cheap t-shirts with Fletcher quotes on them.

That awfully unrealistic 'oops of course he's late, oh look even a car crash doesn't stop him from climbing out of that wrecked car to rush on to the stage in bloody clothes and a broken arm'scene where the movie tries to depict the desperation and obsession of the kid is a typical 5 dollar hollywood moment and ruins what was supposed to be an intense and realistic slice of life type of film

3/10 - I blame redcafe hype.

I read something from a lipreader who believes he said something else. I don't know how to spoiler so I'll put it in white text below

"I knew you could do it"

I still think "Good job" makes more sense. Given how he said they were the worst words in the English language earlier in the film. Beautiful irony.

Just got back from watching It follows. Excellent little film that probably won't get the success it deserves, it's a stunningly well done horror flick that uses teenage angst as a backdrop. The acting is very good, especially by the beautiful Maika Monroe, but's it's the directing, the editing, the cinematography and the music/sound editing that really elevate it and give it a surreal/dreamlike atmosphere. Really enjoyable film that packs a few genuine scares along the way and ends very strongly. I'd put the trailer in the other thread, I'll just post it here again:

It reminded me somewhat of All the boys love Mandy Lane for those that might know that film, not really for the content but for its style and the strong femine character.

Not really, those that use teenagers (or 30 year old actors meant to be teenagers) often fail at having any second level whatsoever and are very straightforward. It's unfortunately too rare for a film of this genre to successfully manage a bit of finesse.

Everyone in Holland seemed to think Inherent Vice was hilarious, like, proper belly laughing at everything. It's probably because they're all high all the time because it's not that funny.

The Theory of Everything.

I thought I'd come out of the cinema disappointed but I'm pleased to say I wasn't! A truly inspirational story and one that pulls on the heartstrings.

If Eddie Redmayne doesn't get the Oscar for his performance it will be an absolute farce!
Felicity Jones' performance was also very very good.

Definitely one of the better films I've seen in a while.

8/10
