Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Interstellar - Didn't understand what the feck happens at the end, but it's a visual masterpiece. Film itself is engaging for the most part - 7/10.

Get Hard -
A film that is far funnier and more enjoyable than I expected. Not Kevin Hart's biggest fan, but he and Ferrell are really good in this movie - 7.5/10.

Just watched Nightcrawler last night and thought it was excellent. I'd read a review that compared Gyllenhaal's Bloom to De Niro's Travis Bickle and I can't say I disagree. I also thought there were similarities to Bale's Patrick Bateman in some respects. Either way I think this is Gyllenhaal's finest performance so far. The story is excellent and Russo, Paxton and Rik Ahmed are all very good but this film is all about Gyllenhaal.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. 8/10 for me.

Get Hard - There are only a few dozen prison rape jokes in this movie, definitely could have done with a few more. Prison rape/10

Need a bit of help.

I've completely forgot the name of this movie. It's a foreign World War 2 movie and I think it had a picture of a girl on the cover, also it's suppose to be amazing.

Edit- Found it. Come and See (1985)

Come and See, it is amazing
I'm on a bit on a ww2 binge at the moment after re watching the Band of Brothers boxset. Although I might have to build myself up to watch Come and See as I've heard it incredibly depressing but amazing as well(The Trailer look terrifying) .

Very different than almost any sort of war movie I´ve ever seen before, and it´s based on the true life of the writer who ran with the Byelorussian resistance. Very mind blowing this film, and some truths that are almost too much to bear.
Yeah that's the main gist of the film, that it's a incredibly hard but rewarding watch.

Didn't know that about the writer though pretty amazing.

Furious 7. Watched it here in a cinema hall and the reaction and applause to Paul Walker's entrance was ridiculous. It was fantastic. if you've watched any of the recent movies from the franchise, you know what to expect. The ended the movie quite beautifully with really nice sending off to Paul Walker. I hope they end the franchise here. 7/10.

Vinny already confirmed there will be an 8th one and it will be set in NY.

Trying to rank them would be just too hard. I think I like Face/Off the less, but Con Air and The Rock are so so good.
Con Air
The Rock
Face/Off

would be my ranking.
Con Air
Face/Off
The Rock

Face/Off
The Rock
Con Air

Travolta was exceptional in Face/Off slightly better than Nick Cage. ConAir and Rock were pretty much equal, but I rate Rock higher due to presence of Sean Connery and Ed Harris.

Who's idiotic idea was it to cast Chrissy Slater in Broken Arrow instead of Nic Cage......Broken Arrow would of been 7x times with Nic Cage.

Anyone have a good sci-fi film for me?
Moon (w/ Sam Rockwell) 8/10-You may find it slower than your usual sci fi movies, so I wouldn't watch this if you want something high octane etc.

Elysium (w/ Matt Damon) 7/10-This is just a old fashioned action packed sci fi movie without much need for explanation.

Move over Rock/Con-Air/Face-Off.... Fast 5, Fast & Furious 6, and Furious 7 is one of the greatest action trilogies of our time (even if they're not a trilogy...)

Just got back from the latest installment... it's bonkers, completely ridiculous and doesn't make a lick of sense. What's not to enjoy?

It was fecking epic is what it is and sad to see it end knowing it was Paul Walkers last film.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Errr...don't know what I really thought of this one. Certainly took me a while to get into it. While I expect the opening ape sequence would've been incredibly impressive in its day, I thought the apes looked a bit dated now, and almost silly. Nevertheless, the whole dawn of human thing is done interestingly, with hints of humanities early brutality in there.

The visuals throughout are undoubtedly superb, and would've probably been enjoyed better on the big screen, but I did feel that there were large sequences which felt incredibly drawn out and could've been cut down a bit.

HAL was a great character though. Thought his whole creepy monotone style worked very well, especially in his sort of death scene where he almost seems sympathetic. Idea of man vs computer was done effectively.

Soundtrack is obviously iconic with its main themes, but thought a lot of the more eerie, creepy stuff at certain points was superb too. Gave it an almost horror movie feeling.

Ending was a complete mindfeck. Seriously, what the feck was that?

Somewhere between 6 and 9/10

I have watched it a few times and never really knew if I liked it or not, this review is spot on for me sums it up very well.
I much prefer the follow up film 2010.

Anyone have a good sci-fi film for me?

Silent Running
Blade Runner (Final Cut)
Titan AE if you don't mind cartoons is quite fun
Alien
Aliens
Terminator
Terminator 2
Mad Max (more dystopian future but close enough)
Moon
Star Trek (the original and the reboot are both worth a watch)
Star Trek Wrath of Kahn
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi (despite the Wookies)
Guardians of the Galaxy
Gravity (for the special effects mainly)

Films aimed at a younger audience still worth a watch

Flight of the Navigator
ET
Treasure Planet

No shit. It is rapidly approaching it's 50th anniversary (1968:eek:) and I'd say the fact that the visuals still stand up so well today (they do - I watched it at the cinema before Xmas) is a testament to how far ahead of his time Kubrick was. Amazing really.

Watched Elysium at the cinema, t'was decent.
I'll give Moon a crack soon. Cheers!

Interstellar if you haven't already seen it.

Watched at cinema, definitely one of my favourite sci-fis.

Haven't seen any of these (well, I've seen a Terminator film or two, as well as an Alien film or two, but I have no idea which one it was).

Cheers.

Yeah, I remember reading that a lot of people assume it's made later than it was because of the visuals.

Furious 7
Cars, chicks and over the top action, especially the scenes with The Rock were ridiculous. Still an entertaining watch though. Great tribute to Paul Walker, that was probably the best sending off I've ever seen. 7/10

Headhunter 8/10.

Strange Norwegian film that is pretty implausible and a bit daft, but well-paced and entertaining and defo well worth seeing. Nice(-ish) plot technique to gloss over a gaping hole in the narrative at the end, but I'll forgive it that. Curious to know if it was well received or a big deal in Scandinavia. I watched Trollhunter a while back too and liked that, albeit it was somewhat more understated. Underrated makers of films our Nordic friends.

I like Flight of the Navigator. Kind of a kids film, but not sure the ending feels like one. Total Recall (the original) has to be in there. I liked those 1950s cold war sci-fi films with dramatic names like the day the earth stood still, the day the earth caught fire etc...probably shite rewatching them as an adult but hey ho.

It was a pretty big hit. The director, Morten Tyldum, made The Imitation Game.

An excellent piece about Blade Runner:

None of the replicants that are Deckard’s quarry are older than four; it should hardly be surprising that they act like kids, too. (“Gosh,” murmurs Roy, as he gazes at a menagerie of living puppets and dolls, “you’ve really got nice toys here.”) It’s as children that we perhaps learn to warm to them, for all their chilling potentiality for violence. They are children, too, in relation to the man who created them: Tyrell, the Frankenstein-father to Roy’s outcast creature. Roy demands of Tyrell, “I want more life, f*cker”, it’s the first and only swear word in the film, all the stronger for it, and for being addressed to a “father” who has unfeelingly engineered him, and not out of love fathered him at all.

Have you watched Downfall? If not, you need to.

Thin Red Line
Das Boot.

The Russians did WWII the best with Come and See obviously being the pinnacle of the genre.

Ivan's Childhood
Ballad of a Soldier
The Ascent
The Cranes Are Flying

Have you watched Downfall? If not, you need to.
Yes watched it a few years ago it was incredible. Although we'll never really know how exactly these people were the film does seem to give a amazing insight in how evil and at the same normal the nazi regime was. Truly truly terrifying.

Also I like to mention what a mass cnut Magda Goebbels was. Hated her more in the film than fecking Hitler.

I like how honest it was. It's very easy for these films to show Hitler as a nutcase psycho but Downfall shows him as a human being. He's still crazy, and you don't sympathise with him to the point where you hope the Nazis hold off the Russian advance, but it still humanises him, and makes you remember that although he was a dreadful man, he still had emotions, he still cared for certain people and he was an extremely complex man.

Mamma Mia

I cant be the only one who likes this , just watched it with my 10 year and he never moved.
Yes it has some rank bad singing but I have to admit I love it.
Julie Walters is excellent in it despite her inability to sing, the same can be said for Pierce Brosnan.
I knew every single song, loved the story and how it panned out.
If you like Abba you will love this.
