Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Had been meaning to watch this for ages and after seeing Slow West, I finally got round to it. Really beautiful, melancholic film. Casey Affleck's performance was shockingly good as I've never rated him. Definitely going to watch it again.

Was planning on going on a Tom Hardy film binge yesterday, but after watching Lawless & Warrior I couldn't be arsed now. I mean, I enjoyed them, Lawless moreso but both were very forgettable films.

I agree with this, one of the better horrors of the last decade for me, low budget and very well acted despite the actors not being too recognizable if at all. The film did have me gripped especially with the use of the atmospheric sound track and grimy settings and despite the simplistic plot it really made me think what would I do as nailing everyone to pass it on kind of proved unsuccessful...flying across the world would probably have help mind
feck a prostitute. She will keep fecking and you will sleep easy. Simples!

You should have topped it off with the borefest that is Locke.

Fantastic film. Brad Pitt's second funniest death, just behind Burn After Reading

I thought Locke and Warrior are both excellent films. Bronson though is one of his best performances... Great film that!

Locke was excellent imo. It was weird how you could actually connect with most of the central characters in the film, despite the way it was filmed. Enjoyed it myself but can understand why it might divide opinions.

I didn't mind it but when he started talking about concrete, I was laughing away at how seriously it was being taken.

Never really enjoyed Bronson. Always felt like Hardy was over-acting all the way through. Which feels like the complete opposite of his most recent efforts.

Just rewatched Man of Steel. It's actually a very good film, the middle action sequence is a bit ropey at times but the rest of the film I enjoyed. Certainly an under rated film.

How?! How is that film excellent? It's just him talking on the phone for 2 hours.

Then some people are saying films like Interstellar are average. It really boggles the mind.

I fully agree.

Altough, it is no Locke.....

It's a character study, though. It's not supposed to be like Interstellar -- both are solid 8/10s for me.

I agree. I thought it was more of an adult superhero film.

Who Shot Framed Roger Rabbit

Hadn't watched this in years. Such a great film. Loads of laughs, definitely not a kids film which is why it wouldn't have mass appeal I think if released today. Decent detective story too. Jessica Rabbit, for a cartoon is so fit. Would love a sequel of this if done in the right way. However it probably would be way too much 3Dness to the cartoons and very childish unfortunately.

9/10

 the opening 45mins is in Arrys words... triffic!

Locke is brilliant character study with a multilayered performance from Tom Hardy. Using the confines of the car to project the claustrophobic situation he falls deeper and deeper into during the course of the narrative works amazingly. I love films that try something different and this definitely does that.

Interstellar was a decent film up until 'love' (you know what I'm talking about if you seen the film). I love big budget films as much as the next guy but the narrative and character arc are the most important to me and Locke nails both.

Although I'm not comparing the two films, they are too different to compare.

Erm, I think you'll find you're leaving out the most important, multi-layered, indepth aspect of Locke; Contrete metaphors... Lots of ham fisted concrete metaphors. In a funny accent.

I honestly can't tell if you're taking the piss with this.

I didn't mind Locke until Mockers and Mike told me it was...well...just about a weirdo who loved cement. It's true, he loved cement more than he loved people. That's strange, to be fair. That said some folk love animals more than they do people...

I really hope so. It sound like it was ripped straight from a GCSE literature student's homework.

I couldn't get into Locke. I think it's because I was fooled by watching the trailer before the film in to thinking it he was being blackmailed and had to do a job for somebody, or he was on the run for being a sadistic serial killer. Then it turned out to a 90 minute 3 way conversation about concrete, family + breakups.. bored to death.

The only film I can think of that I've seen similar to that on a phone with one character is Buried with Ryan Reynolds stuck in a box, and that was better.

Don't think I even made it through 10 minutes of Locke, that accent was abhorrent, and so unnecessary too because it had no bearing on the narrative. It actually bothers me just thinking about it.

On a brighter note I watched Slow West and Ain't them Bodies Saints this week, both very, very enjoyable.

 I wrote that in a pissy way to appear like a critic but I did enjoy the film. I can see why people are not fans of it but I found it quite interesting.

Wild Tales

Six brilliant stories about life being a bitch. It is highly entertaining that I want to re-watch it again.

So what if it has metaphors? They're clunky but it gives the film a depth that isn't in 90% of the movies discussed (and praised) on here.
