Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

End of Watch

Terrific film. Full of action but also heartbreaking at the same time. Gyllenhaal and Pena are excellent in the central roles and the supporting cast add a lot to the overall story. Despite my many reservations about the Suicide Squad, David Ayer shows here he can make a belter.

8/10
Yup, I love that movie also. Really underrated IMO!

Watched a few Swedish films.

Girl with Hyacinths - A decent noir that is noteworthy due to it's racy and pretty frank depiction of a lesbian woman (the film is from 1950).

Falkenberg Farewell - Lyrical at times, messy and uneven at other times, almost like a strange blend of Malick and Korine. The characters sometimes acted very autistic, not the greatest actors at hand. Great soundtrack tho.

Something Must Break - Hyper modern film that had a nice gritty feel to it but was let down by it's acting and screenplay.

Bessie

Biopic about Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues. It gives an insight into her rise from poverty, her larger than life personality, and her friendship with Ma Rainey. The singing presents a challenge as Queen Latifah doesn't have anywhere near the powerful voice of Bessie.

7/10

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

I bloody loved it. Great action, great set-pieces (the whole Opera house thing was the highlight for me - really well put together), Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise, a storyline that actually intrigued me and, in general, it's just a whole load of fun. Soundtrack wasn't bad either.

The Opera house scene was very enjoyable, as was the vehicular chase segment later in the movie.

It has the usual eye rolling moments, but you know to expect that if you've seen the prequels. If you like previous Mission Impossible films, you'll like this.

Funny read on the Telegraph site today about the making of The Island of Dr Moreau

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/the-island-of-dr-moreau/making-of-marlon-brando-richard-stanley/

Brando suggested various ideas he’d had for the general improvement of the movie, and the script would be rewritten to accommodate.

Some that made it into the finished film include: Moreau covering his face in thick white make-up outdoors, Moreau occasionally wearing an ice bucket on his head, and Moreau never appearing without an identically dressed midget – the original Mini-Me, right down to the tiny grand piano – after Brando took a shine to a two-foot-tall actor in the supporting cast. One of the few Brando brainwaves that did not end up on screen was the actor’s suggestion that Moreau would wear an elaborate hat throughout the film. In the final scene, this would be removed – revealing him, in a dramatic twist, to have been a dolphin all along.

Bond: Spectre
Meh. I know there's so much hype around this but personally I'm not a fan of Bond as a series and this did nothing to change my opinion on it. Bond fans might like it though, I personally didn't 5/10
As its released at the end of the year, I doubt the version you saw was the finished article, no?

Thought you were a bit harsh with Falkie Farewell. Loved it and saw it as brilliant and quite profound. Very original with the narration being what it ended up to be. Felt very close to it, maybe cause I´m an older cnut. I was left with a really sad nostalgia. Totally agree with the great soundtrack schtick.

Yeah, maybe, it was depressing and very relatable at times, even though the interactions sometimes took me out of it. I imagine it's the kinda film that will slow burn in my head for a while.

Guessing it gets really good then, I only watched the first 10 minutes and never got back around to it. Must give it another go.

It gets very good. Would definitely recommend.

Here's a question for everyone. Name me an actor/actress who is regarded as an A lister but has made nothing but rubbish films. As an example, I think Cameron Diaz is bloody awful and although she has been in good films, they've not been good because of her. Can anyone else name anybody who is highly regarded but when you look at their back catalogue you'd struggle to name any good films?

Probably because she's extremely hot, just like Jennifer Aniston has done nothing but shite movies but are still regarded as high profiled celebrities.

It's a shit load harder to be a top actress and get plum roles, there just aren't that many out there.
Aww absolutely. Going the other way then, this is gonna be a controversial one. Everyone generally regards Johnny Depp to be a top actor. But what was the last truly great movie he made? For someone regarded as at the top of his profession he sure makes a lot of brutal movies.

He was an indie darling in the 90s. Now he makes films for his kids, which he's been fairly open about. But yeah, they're shit.

Agree with this - look at maybe the 60s onwards and actresses (even good ones) are pretty much discarded once they hit 30 - especially as far as films go and maybe get a couple of years in the odd TV episode and then they disappear off the face off the earth - takes something a bit special (and maybe a brilliant agent) to get past this period
