Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

What other Haneke films are worth watching? Cache's the only one I've seen and I loved it.

Not sure if I can face Amour, and heard mixed things about Funny Games (Kermode really, really hates it).

I thought Funny Games was decent, if a little up its own arse. Haven't seen the American remake.

What's wrong with Cache you bum?
This for some reason really made me  very loud in the middle of the office. Thank you for that

Dull? Surprised to see it described as such, brilliant film. Both McQueen and Fassbender on top form.
Yeah one of the best I've seen(The ending few minutes are incredible). Also I would say Carey Mulligan is just as good if not better than Fassbenders(Although he is pretty amazing in it)

It had a lot to like about it: Fassbender, New York, James Badge Dale's sleazy boss, it's look. But I didn't actually get anything out of it. It was about a guy addicted to sex but didn't really explore why other than some vague allusions to abuse as a child. I did enjoy it though, I just think 12 Years was better, although not as perfect as some claim.
Looking at interviews from the cast they did seem surprised when that was was brought up. The bathroom scene that's used as an example is according to Mulligan a way for Sissy to piss of Brendon which makes sense and also I wouldn't say it that odd anyway considering they are brother and sister and around the same age. So it might be people looking to deep into it, although I know when I saw the first for the first time it cross my mind.
It's slight pushing it a bit but wouldn't Birdman count as a comic book film.

I think 21 Jump Street is hilarious and I'd probably have it on there as my favourite since 2010, I don't actually think of Grand Budapest as a comedy but if it's in that genre, why not.
I thought the sequel was even funnier. I'd probably go for that one for best comedy, certainly funniest comedy. I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan but I don't think The Grand Budapest is one of his best films.

As for drama, I very much disagree with the pick of 12 Years a Slave. It's a good film but Boyhood is, for me, a milestone in movie history.

I only saw it the once, and it was a couple of years back so I can't state any particular scene as evidence, but I definitely got the impression there was a lot more to their relationship than the average brother and sister and there might be a bit of history there.

Thought Shame was brilliant as well, and a very subtle probing into a sickish modern mentality.

Unfortunately I think McQueen has lost it after 12 years a slave. Can´t see him making (or being allowed to make) anything as artistic or subtle as Shame after that. Might have sold his soul.

Oh yeah I think there was definitely something there
It seems from the cuts on her arm, Sissy had a history of self abuse
just not sure it was sexual abuse. Only because in interviews it seem to surprise McQueen, Fassbender and Mulligan when it was brought up and that the bathroom scene is normally used as the example
Sissy didn't cover up when Brendon came into the bathroom
of sexual abuse but Mulligan reasoning get's rid of that.

Yes, it's coming back to me now. I think I initially assumed she was his girlfriend!

I don't remember thinking anything about child abuse, but they were both obviously damaged goods.

You're right actually, 22 was an improvement on an already hilarious first installment.

'feck you brain'

Amour's his best by a country mile.

Funny Games is worth watching, I think it's interesting but it's condescending and pious. Time of the Wolf I quite liked, a precursor to McCarthy's The Road and everything the novel went on to inspire. Amour though is his stand out film, and maybe the one film that justifies the acclaim he so freely acquires. Unmissable.

Pah, guess I have to watch the one about the old people dying. Maybe a double bill with Finding Nemo.

Inside Out

A seriously strong contender for my film of the year. Unbelievably deep and inspired for a children's film. The best kids TV/films manage to strike a good balance between entertainment for kids and entertainment for adults. Pixar have an excellent track record for this already but this film just knocks it out the park. If you thought the 1st 10 minutes of Up were deep, this is an hour and a half of it.

10/10

Rush Hour 10/10
Rush Hour 2 8/10
Rush Hour 3 6/10
Shanghai Noon 9/10

Now time to watch Shanghai Knights

Dope - there's a really great teen movie in here somewhere but it's couched between about three other films. Lots of laughs but overlong, too many characters and the last twenty minutes is all hackneyed preaching. I think Shameik Moore will be a star, A$AP Rocky can kind of act.

Also Kiersey Clemons . Zoe Kravitz :drool:. Chanel Iman :drool::drool:.

Jurassic World. Eh, not that horrible, but still a bit horrible. Stupid, but bigger 'sin' would be that it's quite forgettable and completely unremarkable as well. Chris Pratt was also kinda subdued, expected more...something.

4...ish out of 10 I guess...?

It's better than Lost World, that's for sure.

Watched The man from U.N.C.L.E tonight and it was very very good. A tad predictable but good nonetheless. Had everything you'd expect from a Ritchie movie in true Ritchie style, 4/5 and might be open for a sequel!

feck IMAX, just sit on the front row of the normal screen.

I unwillingly tried this today and it actually wasn't too bad apart from the ocassional issue with focus  Maybe slightly further back would work better!

I think I'm gonna watch A City of Sadness tomorrow.

I thought Inside Out was great, obviously, but I didn't really get into it until the half hour mark. Everything before they left the HQ felt a bit flat for me. Perhaps because I'd seen most of it in the trailers, or perhaps because I never really warmed to Joy, possibly due to her rather uninspired design, which seemed unusual for Pixar. In fact all the emotions bar Sadness and Anger seemed a bit weak design wise. Once they left for their 'adventure' though, it was brilliant, and I loved how subtly they dealt with the big unifying realisation...

that even the happiest of old memories will eventually become sadder with the whistfulness of time, but in a more rounded, profound and no less important way...which was put across visually, with full trust in the audience, when it would've been very easy, and tempting, to have the dad explain it cak handedly...you know, like I've just done.

Easily their best original work since Wall-E, but that opening period, and the comparative weakness of the main characters probably prohibits me from calling it one of their very best.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E

Really liked this. Great fun whilst not being as fun as something like Kingsman it was very entertaining. 2 hours flew by. Hammer & Cavill were both good and really funny too IMO,
particularly Cavill.

That scene with Cavill sat drinking & eating in the truck

Alicia Vikander was once again

Hope there is a sequel also, the last scene seemes to suggest there may just be one...

8.5/10

Amy

Best film I've seen at the cinema this year, superb portrait of her personality, songwriting, and the pitfalls of fame. 9/10

Queen of Earth - terrific psychological thriller in the style of old 70s exploitation pics with a healthy dose of Polanski. Elisabeth Moss is terrifyingly unhinged in the lead. This is definitely one for you @R.N7 .

On a side note, I had the awkward honour of sitting next to Alex Ross Perry through the screening because I arrived late, which added an extra layer of discomfort.

Lucy

Saw this one today. I'm a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson and she was very good in this one as well. Gorgeous woman. She was the only good thing about this film. The first 20 minutes was good, then it quickly becomes nonsensical. Couldn't help but laugh at some parts. Morgan Freeman was alright.

7.4/10

So you thought it was a poor movie but gave it 7.4/10

Cop Car Very enjoyable creepy thriller with a splash of dark humour, well worth the 86 minutes I invested. 7.5/10

Macbeth - Justin Kurzel's take on the Scottish play. Looks brilliant (Adam Arkapaw), with a predictably strong performance from Michael Fassbender. Marion Cotillard is good but her accent is dodgy. It was also bloody hard to understand Shakespeare's language through the thick Scottish accents and all the mumbling. The final scene is outstanding in every sense.

I don't know how it compares to other adaptations because I haven't seen any but I think it did justice to the original play.

Every year or so I seem to forget I've seen Magnolia and have the thought "Why haven't I seen it? Everyone says it's PTA's best film." About a minute in, I realise I've been here before, then, 3 hours laters, I'm sat down thinking "hope it's as good next year". Bloody good film, that.

This time it had the added bonus of making me think I've got a Temporomandibular Disorder when one of the characters started clicking her jaw and I successfully copied her.
